    First saw this as a kid back in the early '80s on TV and didnt really get it...now it's one of my favorite war-movies ever.

    All proper-movie fans should check it out if they can.

    Nope. I watched this when it came out in 1980 just to see if Mark Hamill could do anything else besides Luke Skywalker. His character was a pathetic coward and IMO he barely pulled it off. Lee Marvin's character was two dimensional. The whole film felt like a badly written comic book .
