Nah not yet mate, I thought I would be going there when I applied for my National Insurance number but they arranged that for a different venue. Whats the deal with Southall?? Sudbury Hill is a bit mixed, Polish White Shites, a few Somali, a lot of Indians, a few Mozlims who hang around the Bilal Masjid on the way to Perivale, near Horsenden Hill. Two Irish bars, one in Greenford, the other right up near Sudbury Hill, I've been warned off the one in Sudbury, as it is Tinker Central apparently.
It's a fair question and worth looking into. I would propose that we do it like this: Start a new thread. List successful fighters and their Olympic appearances. An olympic class should consist of fighters who turned pro after they fought in an olympics, but before the next olympics or attempting to make the next olympics. (For example, I wouldn't have counted Rau'shee Warren as a 2008 olympian if he hadn't gone pro until this year after failing to make the 2012 olypics. If you don't make the olympics, you aren't in the coversation. (Mosley isn't from the class of '92). List of fighter's accomplishments. (This is so we can count titles won and validate my opinion that they matter, haha) For example, under the class of 1992, Oscar's entry may look something like: 1992: Oscar de la Hoya, (1992 Gold medalist at 132) Overall record: XX-X-X (XX) Won titles: 130 WBO 135 WBO, IBF 140 WBC etc Additional: blah blah blah Last, but not least, we should independently backup the thread so it doesn't disappear when fightbeat.com gets shut down. : ) although, that's a smiley face, it should be a >: |
Southall is all South Asian mate. I don't go round that way much as there's no reason for me to go, but there's a few good pubs round there. I've gone with Sikh friends before though and they knew the owners so I didn't have any issues but I got the impression it would have been a different story if I'd just rolled up by myself. Lots of trouble between the Sikh and Muslim gangs that way, can get a bit rough, but you can have a good night in the right places. Perivale looks a bit shit, I've only been up that way for work as the archive and a few edit houses are round there but it mainly seems to be made up of industrial estates?
Perivale is like a bit of a river that got cut off from the rest, its all dried out and sleeper-town. Good few industrial estates alright, for sure. Nice grand big Tescos. There are two fit Indian twins working in Iceland in Sudbury, I was rocking a veiny one looking at them tonight. :kidcool: I personally have no time for gangs of Asians squaring off in their Novas and Corsa's, absolutely convinced they are Afro's. :laugh11: Fucking pathetic. I've been told of a great takeaway in Sudbury Town so that's my next call. My Brother-In-Law's mom is a real old bigot, she wouldn't have a Somali carer, she kept calling them "Pirates" and all the Poles are "thieves" because they live in tower blocks. I have tried to point out some truths to her, specifically that it is wrong to think the Poles are thieves simply because they live in tower blocks. They are thieves because they are Poles. Where they live has nothing to do with it. ::
I think that the Olympians shouldn't be limited to medalists, do you agree? It makes it more difficult to track them all down, but for example in 2008 we should also be including Shawn Estrada, Demetrius Andrade, etc as well as Felix Sturm from the 2000 class.
I agree. We need to identify medalists because it's worth doing, but an olympian is an olympian. Btw, we will pretty much crush the notion that amateur success means nothing in the pros. As I have stated many times, the single best predictor for pro success is amateur success. And the single most relevant amateur criteria for success is success in the olympics. I kinda hate to do this for everyone, but whatever.
Looking back the Olympic argument holds water with regards to American, Cuban and European boxers. Latin American boxers seem to thrive independent of amateur or Olympic amateur success. I did some quick preliminary research on this before I made the original statement about 2008 being the weakest class in decades. researching only medalists, tho. 1984: M/Taylor - IBF champion in 1988 Whitaker - WBC champion in 1988 Breland - WBA champion in 1987 V/Hill - WBA champion in 1987 Holyfield - WBA champ in 1986 T/Biggs - contender challenged for the title in 1987 Damiani - WBO champion in 1989 Frank Tate - IBF champion in 1987 Hector Lopez - contender first challenged for a title in 1993 1988: Carbajal - IBF champion in 1990 K/McKinney - IBF champ in 1992 G/Parisi - WBO champ in 1992 Boudouani - WBA champ in 1996 Maske - IBF champ in 1993 Maynard - challenged for WBc title in 1992 Mercer - WBO champ in 1991 Lennox - WBC champ in 1992/93 Bowe - WBC/WBA/IBf champ in 1992 RJJ - IBf champ in 1993 R/Woodhall - challenged for WBC in 1996, won WBC 168 in 1998 1992: T/Austin - IBF champ in 1997 KoKo Kovacs - competed in 1996 Olympics Casamayor - WBA champ in 1999 McCullough - WBC champ in 1995 DLH - WBO champ in 1994 Byrd - WBO champ in 2000 Torsten May - challenged for IBF in 1996 Izon(retei) - contender Tua - challenged for title in 2000 Brian Neilson - contender R/Reid - WBC champ in 1996 1996: Kovacs - WBO champ in 2001 Mayweather - WBC champ in 1998 DANIEL SANTOS - WBO champ in 1999 Rhoshi Wells - challenged WBA in 2003 Jirov - IBf champ in 1999 T/Ulrich - challenged WBC in 2005 Tarver - IBF/WBC champ in 2003 Krasniqi - challenged WBO in 2005 W/Klitschko - WBO champ in 2000 Oktay Urkal - challenged WBA in 2001 D/Reid - WBA champ in 1999 Terrence Cauthen - contender 2000: Sidorenko - WBA champ in 2005 Rocky Juarez - challenged WBC in 2006 Rigondeaux - competed in 2004 Olympics Kotelnik - challenged WBA in 2007, won WBA in 2008 Zsolt Erdei - WBo champ 2004 Ibragimov - WBO champ 2007 Audley Harrison (haha) Abdulaev - contender Ricardo Williams - contender J/Taylor - undipsuted champ in 2005 2004: Y/Gamboa - WBA champ in 2009 Rigondeaux - WBA champ in 2012 Khan - WBA champ in 2008 A/Dirrell - challenged WBC in 2009 A/Ward - WBA champ in 2009 O/Solis - challenged challenged WBC in 2011 Pvetkin - won WBA in 2011 2008: No champions, or titleholders yet, and the overall status of the contenders are pretty pathetic, imo. Degale, Wilder, Diaz, Glazkov, and Chakhkiyev Every Olympic class had multiple boxers that made serious noise or won a title in 4 years or less, except for 2008. And they don't even have anyone that I think warrants being called an excellent contender. We'll see on Glazkov and Chakhkiyev. Degale is crap, Wilder isn't special, Andrade is good but he didn't medal, Diaz isn't that great either imo
