Out of the list of fighters under Emanuel Steward's tutelage, who was the most talented and why? I'll list nine in the poll and leave out another option as "other".

Hearns, and I don't really think it requires much explanation.

I went with Pryor actually. Tommy was the other possibility I considered.

Tommy had tremendous talent, obviously, but he was also a much more textbook-oriented fighter than Pryor was. He threw his punches the way one is "supposed" to, his ability to stick and move was tremendous, he looked more or less a classic boxer. He had unusual gifts... height, reach, handspeed, remarkable leverage, etc. but he also was successful because he often did things correctly to compliment all of that physical wonder.

Pryor did things you are explicitly warned against doing... he threw combinations with everything on them in exceedingly long strings... 6 and 7 punch combos... not Meldrick Taylor/Ray Leonard things where there is one or two shots with some steam on them and the rest are meant to dazzle or distract; Pryor threw 6 or 7 shots with steam on them, the kind of thing that would be dangerous for 99% of boxers because of the potential vulnerability to counters, not to mention tiring yourself out. Pryor could be very effective off the backfoot, make people miss and then hammer them, but even doing that he was doing a lot "wrong" ... squaring up, stepping straight back, moving his head in a direction that seemed senseless or counter-intuitive to textbook methods. He got away with all of that shit because he was a freak. Things that should make you vulnerable seemed to embolden him. He had speed of hand and foot, he was exceedingly strong, he had a killer instinct that can't really be taught and he had his own weird sort of boxing theory going on that worked spades for him and probably would have gotten most guys knocked dead. You could argue that Tommy amazing physical gifts make him the better choice, but I like Pryor in this discussion simply because achieving dominant results while doing things others can not do and aren't supposed to do seems like a pretty good measure of a guy's inherent talent (a la Roy Jones Jr. in his prime days)

Tommy Hearns Would Tell U it's a Guy by the Name of Bernard "Super Bad" Mays....To This Day, Hearns SWEARS that Mays was THE BEST Fighter Steward Ever had....

McCallum. Easily. The dude was a boxing text book in motion.

By the way, McCallum and Steward agree with Hearns on Reed's mention of Mays. They all thought he was the best fighter in the gym.

What's an "Emanuel Steward Trained Fighter" meant to be? Naz? Was he one? :dunno:

funny hearing steward talk about holyfield and don turner. he claims turner "couldnt even mop up piss at the kronk"

    Irish Yuge, Beautiful

Didn't Holy dump Steward for Turner over money?

  12. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

yup, obviously what sparked that particular comment. steward off camera averages 3 or 4 cuss words per sentence.

Have to admit I hadn't heard of Mays before, just read up on him. Sad stuff man, what a waste.

Yeah Mays drank himself to death.

ive heard mays mentioned before but never seen footage of any of his fights. anywhere here seen him?

  16. Lewis was more talented than Hearns, P4P, IMNSHO

Hearns being a Wleterweight/Middleweight gets automatic P4P points over a Heavyweight...but for their weight, Lewis had more abilities than Hearns.

  17. Nah...it's anyone Stewart trained so Naz is also on the list. Doesn't matter though....wouldn't change the picks.

No Way in HELL was Lennox MORE TALENTED than Tommy Hearns, Homey:eek:hno:....

Hearns was Quicker TO the Punch, had Significantly MORE Mobility, MUCH Better Speed, Lb for Lb & was CONSIDERABLY MORE Willing to Engage...In Terms of Pure TALENT, Tommy Hearns is Top 10 All Time, in REED's Book...

No way, no how. I know you like to knock Hearns down a bit whenever you can due to your ongoing agenda against the Fab 4, but there is no way Lewis was the more talented fighter.

from what i read, mays would just show up occasionally to the kronk and lace a whupping on hearns in sparring.

steward himself admitted that hearns wasn't the most athletically gifted guy in the gym.

from the list though, i'd say the most talented guy was g-man.

    Hearns

Mays could and maybe should have been, but tragically wasn't

And Lewis isn't even the 2nd best fighter on that list btw

It's undeniably Hearns. Obscene talent, only let down by his ability to absorb punishment.

Must admit I've never even heard of Mays either. Can't believe he was only 33, that's some fucking hardcore drinking.

No idea how anyone could vote for Lewis tbh. Even wald pussy has more natural talent. The only great talent Lewis had was power, and that was mainly in the right hand.

    Alright, now THAT'S bullshit!

Lewis was more talented than either one of those hoe sisters.

    But I agree, he's not #2.

Hearns, Pryor, and McCallum were a cut above the rest of those guys in terms of talent.

Hearns was a little awkward in his punch delivery and his footwork wasn't very smooth, either.

Talent alone, I think it's probably Pryor or Hamed.
