She's definitely better than most, but truth be told, not as good as I expected. As far as technique, skill and talent, she didn't look much better than Jonas - she was just more experienced and aggressive.

Womens boxing should be right up your street, what with all the headgear and stuff.

She won wide and gave the kid two standing 8's, I think she may have been tight/nervous...that was her first bout, the British kid had an opener versus an American, who, thankfully, was able to drag herself away from the football/basketball/cheerleading to be here with us at these games. :bears:

Actually, I'd say that the best of the women's boxing matches up well with the quality observed in the early stages of the men's competition. That may say more about the quality of men's amateur boxing, but I see women's boxing having a more natural home in the amateur arena rather than the pro game where the limitations become more apparent.

I agree with that actually, from what I have seen of women's amateur and pro boxing.

I was expecting her to be in a completely different league though, like Chenko Vs whatever mook he happens to be bashing. I'll watch more though, maybe she was a bit nervous or something.

I think you're on crack, the few woman bouts I have seen have been pathetic. Not much better than the average male pug who only does boxing casually (as to keep in shape). Not to mention weight classes where they are only 8 participants :pathetic::pathetic:

I think you have to compare it with the women's 3000 steeplechase (just finished), an event which is new to the olympics and relatively new altogether - international women's amateur boxing is properly around maybe 10-12 years. It will take a while for standards to rise, I see enough to indicate that increased competition will take it to a higher level.
Plus I'd disagree with you, no way the best of them are any worse than some of the pugs we've see in the men's boxing - particularly in the 1st and 2nd rd.

Its the principle of it in any case....Boxing is always a magnet for the wrong sort of attention. Usually, I give Womens-This and Womens-That short-shrift, but as long as womens boxing stayed outside the games, Boxing was always going to be a soft easy target for the equality bunch.

Nobody here thinks the Women's 100m is run as fast as the mens 100m, so what the fuck...they think Womens boxing will be as good as the mens?

In any event, Taylor vs Jonas was decent fare.

The Mexican that lost to Nevin will be beating Nevin in 2-3 years from now, but Lomachenko is a good fighter.

Salaco is right. Ogogo is a "Face", what with his TV ads and the like. It's basically bollox, these guys are going to become the England Team of boxing......another "Golden Generation" that flops.

Of all the Irish guys I have seen fight, not a single one of them that won deserved to lose and not a single one of them that lost deserved to win. In fact, that Scarecrow Nolan...I was never so happy to see an Irishman get the head boxed off him. Too ugly to be an Olympian.

Ogogo is an even worse version of that fraud DeGale. He is absolutely shite; a complete boxbot in the Khan mould of dense, sloppy, slappy garbage.
