West Side Story has been the cultprit of creating the sterotype of puertoricans being ghetto gang members criminals. I hate that film like no other. Find it repulsive and offensive. BTW I don't live in Miami.:finger:

    True.

John Travolta was 24, Olivia Newton-John was 30, Jeff Conway was 28, Stockhard Channing was 34, the girl that played Cha-Cha was 30 and some other cast members were 30, 32, 27...the youngest ones were 20 (Lorenzo Lamas as the jock).

Sure is. Its not the movie that is a culprit for creating the stereotypes, its our people themselves that have done it.

I don't know about any of that, but I was just going to say the stereotype existed before West Side Story was conceived

    Not true.

Of all the ricans living in USA 95% are not gang members, criminals, whores or ghetto people. Most are hardworking law abiding citizens. West Side Story was the 'introduction' of 'puertoricans' to the masses around the world who knew close to nothing about us. Even a former Puerto Rico governor blamed this film for perpetuating a negative image of the island and its people. The song "America", the most popular of the film, starts with lyrics of pure denigration toward Puerto Rico calling it "ugly island of tropic diseases". I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and anyone that insults my country better hide in a cave.

Define country and I will tell you if it doesn't fit that definition. Yes, politically Puerto Rico is a colony of USA after it became a bounty, spoils of war from the Spanish-American war. We were invaded by a foreign country and the invasion remains until this day: 114 years of imperialist subjugation and imposed culture has not made a significant dent in our language, culture and nation pride like when one of our sons, like the olympic runner Javier Culson, the other day won a medal in London and our flag was raise and our national anthem "La Borinqueña" was heard.

The movie does not display that at all. Its about stupid young people. It's romeo & Juliet with a twist. its about how young people do stupid shit. And if anything, it showed the Puerto Ricans As the Good guys in the film.

I dont care what anyone says, that movie doesnt make people feel negative about Puerto Ricans. Puerto Ricans do that all by themselves.

The idea of a grown man being into "Grease" is hard to take seriously.

Define into? I just will stop and watch some of it if its on. Laugh at a few lines here and there. Sing-a-long with some of the good songs. Do a dance here and there. Say "Its ELECTRIFYING" at the same time Travolta does, and go to sleep with a smile on my face.

How the fuck is that "Into" Grease?

For 1978 musical a song like "Greased Lightning' was pretty cool.

"...With a four-speed on the floor, they'll be waitin' at the door
You know that ain't shit when we'll be gettin' lots of tit in greased lightnin'...
You know that I ain't braggin', she's a real pussy wagon - greased lightnin'..."

I feel the same way about Bollywood movies. For me, Grease was a popular movie when I was in primary school and the songs bring back good memories.
