Dokes had "fast hands" and "good inside punches" for one very simple reason: for a heavyweight, by todays standards, he was fucking tiny. Dokes was the shortest, smallest, tiniest 6'3" 220lb heavyweight I've ever laid eyes on.

Part of the reason the 80's gets so much stick is that fistic-decade began with the end of Ali and ended with the rise and crowning of Tyson. The next reason is the lack of continuity, and perhaps also the proliferation of titles {IBF}, which exacerbated the lack of continuity. Ali had been a superstar, singular champion. Tyson rapidly unified when he came along {and beat the Lineal/Linear champ} so the impression is amplified further....."the 1980's before Tyson were a period of splintered titles and shit fighters".

Its not necessarily the case, but equally, this notion, now bandied about with equal comfort, that all Dokes had to do was show up today and he would be champ....is bullshit.

"the 1980's before Tyson were a period of splintered titles and shit fighters"

Not exactly true. The perception then was that there was a group of talented fighters who didn't reach their full potential. The actual frustration of boxing fans at that time was the inconsistency of the top contenders/title holders. NOT that they were "shit fighters".

But, even with the inconsistency, I would definitely rate Dokes, Page, Cooney, Thomas, Witherspoon, Coetzee, Snipes, Weaver, Smith & Tubbs as a better group of contenders than the top ten contenders the Klitschkos have faced.

Dokes at his best may or may not have been able to beat both Klitschkos, but he was better than any fighter they have faced.

Fair enough. Of course, Wlad didn't defend against Corrie Sanders or Lamon Brewster SUCCESSFULLY. Dokes was so hot and cold that I wonder if I wonder rank him over both. I've never given it thought till now. He would probably make it over Sanders, but I dunno about Brewster.

Nah. Dokes was better than both of these guys. Even an older, post-drug issues Dokes gave Holyfield all he wanted.

Good grief. Evander "Acid Test" Holyfield....a guy who, next to Dokes, blew more hot-and-cold than any of them.

Lots of guys gave Evander all he wanted.

No he wasn't. But I honestly don't think Dokes would have beaten Wlad. Wlad's losses can be used to make the argument against him, almost every time, with almost every prospective opponent, but his wins, and winning streak with Manny Steward, mean the argument for him can be made just as easily.

Dokes wasn't knocked out by Sanders, but then again, Wlad wasn't knocked out by Coetzee.

Dokes was a vastly superior boxer to anyone wald has fought, including that journeyman bum Sanders

A win over him would be the best on either Klit's resume, that is a fact.

Second time around. Sure---3 years later after he had lost to Sergei Liakhovich. Hardly an immediate rematch on the scale of Lewis-Rahman 2.

Fair enough. He might jab his way to a cautious 12-round keepaway session victory.

Which wins of Wald Pussy's would you say make him a favorite against past legitimate contenders who are better than anyone else he's ever fought?
