'Cyborg' done talking Rousey, says 'spoiled little girl' can come back to original weight

by John Morgan on Aug 20, 2012 at 9:20 pm ET
[IMG]Former Strikeforce women's featherweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (10-1 MMA, 4-0 SF) has made it clear she is not a Ronda Rousey (6-0 MMA, 4-0 SF) fan.

And while she would be more than happy to step into the cage with "Rowdy," especially after the current Strikeforce female bantamweight champion called her out, Santos has been medically advised against trying to make 135 pounds.

With that in mind, Santos said she's done talking about Rousey and any potential fight for the bantamweight title. If Rousey wants to prove her worth, Santos said, let her come back to 145 pounds to do it – the same place she started her Strikeforce career.

"I get many questions about Ronda Rousey, and I would like to set the record straight for the last time, as I do not consider her much personally, much less as a fighter," Santos told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) through an interpreter. "She claims she is the champion and openly challenges me to fight at 135 pounds, which I find laughable. She competed in the Beijing Olympics at 154 pounds and fought at 145 pounds in MMA until she learned she would have to fight me and then dropped to 135 pounds.

"I have never fought below 145 pounds, and I am considered the pound-for-pound top woman fighter in the world. I have yet to lose a fight while holding the Strikeforce 145-pound title. My last fight was considered a no contest, but that has not changed the fact that I am the women's 145-pound champion."

Santos, who made her Strikeforce debut in April 2009, was stripped of the Strikeforce women's featherweight title one month after a post-fight drug test at "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal" turned up positive for stanozolol metabolites in late 2011.

The California State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the event, suspended Santos for one year and fined her $2,500. Additionally, her first-round TKO of Hiroko Yamanaka was also overturned to a no-contest.

Rousey, who was 2-0 in Strikeforce's 145-pound division, dropped to 135 pounds earlier this year and promptly earned the promotion's female bantamweight title by submitting then-champion Miesha Tate. This past Saturday night, the former Olympic judoka defended the title by submitting former champion Sarah Kaufman in just 54 seconds.

Following the win, Rousey called out Santos and challenged her to come down to 135 pounds.

"I need to send out a challenge to Ms. Cyborg, there," Rousey said after her victory. "People want to see you have the first fair fight of your life. I'm the champ now. The champ doesn't go to you. You go to the champ. Come down to 135 and let's settle this."

Santos said that's simply impossible for her to do, and doctors have told her as much. As far as the Brazilian slugger is concerned, if this potential superfight is going to happen, it needs to be in the same division Rousey started her Strikeforce career.

"There really is not a safe way for me to cut to 135 pounds – not without hurting myself physically," Santos said. "I am less than eight percent body fat at 145 pounds, and my cardiologist and physician have advised me that to make such a drastic reduction in weight could have permanent effects on my long-term health. I will not endanger my health to satisfy the rantings of a spoiled little girl who has yet to prove that she can truly compete at my level at a weight she has not only fought at before but has been awarded an Olympic medal."

Santos' CSAC suspension ends in December, and despite a since-deleted tweet that suggested she was looking to terminate her Strikeforce contract, the former champion said she's looking forward to fighting again and hopefully regain the belt she eagerly points out she never truly lost.

And if Rousey wants to move up to 145 pounds in an attempt to make history as a female dual-division champion, then she has an open invitation to step into the cage. Until then, "Cyborg" said she's done dealing with the outspoken Californian.

"To put this issue to rest, if Ronda is the future of women's MMA and is the champion that she envisions, you know where I am, and I am more than willing to give you an opportunity to test me," Santos said. "I will fight you at 145 pounds – you know, the weight that you started at – and then you can have two belts and prove to everyone that you are indeed a champion. If not, stay at 135 pounds and continue to delude yourself and your fans that you can beat me. You're really not worth my time otherwise.

"I will do all of my talking in the ring. Until then, you're really not worth my breath."

Ummmm. In my opinion Cyborg has done NOTHING but used steroids to get an unfair advantage over other women at 145 pounds. Would she be OK with Rousey bulking up to 155-160 with steroids and then cutting to 145? Probably not, but that's exactly what Cyroid has been doing.

To me she isn't champion of anything until she wins one fight with strict drug testing.

And the other thing Cyborg COMPLETELY leaves out is that there is NO ONE fighting at 145. Most of her Strikeforce opponents had to fight ABOVE their natural weight just to give Cyborg someone to fight. Cyborg will have zero marquee fights outside of Rousey or other 135'ers like Tate or Kaufman.

Cyborg also came in at 151 for her fight with Akana and unmercifully beat the hell out of her.

To me, Cyborg is the most disgusting of all steroid cheats. If I were managing a female fighter, I wouldn't let her anywhere in the same room with Cyborg unless she was tested twice weekly leading up to our fight.

She's cheated to gain an unfair advantage and really has no business talking about any other clean fighters.

despite all of that its ridiculous to make her fight at a weight she has never fought at before.

She's only 8% body fat at 145 because of the drugs. There's no way she would have that much muscle mass if she trained as a natural athlete. She's been juicing her entire career; that's why she's never fought at 135.

I don't think she has to drop to 135, but it wouldn't be medically dangerous like she's saying. I'd love to see the fight at 145 as long as they do extensive drug testing leading up to the fight. She's managed to get away with roids over and over again in her career because they don't do enough testing. She's been caught once, but no one believes that was her first time using PEDs.

That is all fine, but Ronda has fought at 145 before. And since it's ronda doing the challenging, she should be the one that puts the effort in for the fight no? At worst, a catch weight of 140.

I don't think Cyborg should have to drop to 135, that's asking a lot. She was the 145lb champ before she was stripped. I say a catchweight fight at 140 is as fair as both parties could ask for.

Maybe, maybe not, you can't claim it as fact though without proof. The fact is she was caught ONE time, in her last fight. My honest opinion is that many fighters use drugs off and on, some just get caught when they don't time it correctly when it come off. I still can't claim as fact that she's been using them her whole career though.

Yeah i think some of those easy fights where cyborg didnt even train, i doubt she was on anything. But yeah, she was only caught once.

Cyborg has made a career out of beating up small chicks. Why the fuck should Rousey come up to 145 just because she fought there before? Rousey was fat at 145, she got in shape and now fights at 135. She's not a 145lber at all.

And Cyborg isn't 135lb'er so there's the dilemma. If the fight is to be made, both parties are likely going to have to reach a compromise. It would be foolish if they didn't considering the money to be made on that fight but then again...we're still waiting on Pac-Mayweather aren't we?

You could probably take the word female out of that phrase and have it be just as accurate.

Maybe Santos should stop taking steroids and she won't have as much trouble cutting or making weight?

I don't know Buddy, I just think if that were the case, she would have chosen to do that to make this fight happen. Something tells me she's not juiced the gills like most people think. She got popped for some Winstrol, which is a common drug for Olympic athletes because it's good for explosive strength without necessarily adding much muscle and water weight. Its what many people use a cutting drug to maintain muscle and strength while dieting down. Has she been doing it forever, I don't know nor do I care as long as she tests negative after the fight. I don't know how easily she could make 135lbs, certainly she knows the answer to that and she doesn't seem willing to do it right now so I don't really think the steroids are a factor. I think she simply knows her body can't do it. Its fair to at least give her the benefit of the doubt in saying she can't make that weight. She had enough trouble making 145.

    Because she called Santos out

Cyborg has been calling out Rousey ever since she pissed hot and Rousey let her have it in the media. I don't think she should give Cyborg any advatage. She already has the advantage of a lifetime of steroid use.

if that is the case, then you are right. If she calls out Ronda, she needs to go down.

I dont think Steriods works that way. I dont think past steriod use would help her against rousy. Ask Orion tho.

Nobody can convince me that her size isn't due to steroid use. It's just too easy to get away with, so I'm sure she'll just be more careful with her cycle timing next time.

I agree with all of this except your conclusion.

Fuck her. If she gets off the juice, she can make 135. Look at her. Her low body fat % and mass look like they are due to PEDs and she has tested positive for PEDs. Fuck her.

  22. mikE

    mikE "Twinkle Toes" McJack

Agree. She doesn't really look tight at 135.

Why? I hope because she's a fucking girl and you can be in great shape without having extremely low body fat %, particularly if you aren't a cheating piece of shit.

  23. mikE

    mikE "Twinkle Toes" McJack

There may be some PEDs that only provide temporary benefit and nothing more, but anytime you are changing muscle mass or muscle constitution, it's not like reversion to the previous state is automatic.
