Ricardo Mayorga at least beat a legit champ in Vernon Forrest. Sonnen isn't even on Mayorgas level. One of the biggest frauds in all of sports.

As I said earlier, I am a bit on the fence about Jones with regard to turning down the fight against Sonnen.

Much of what Jones has said is true. Sonnen is a far better MMA wrestler at this stage than Henderson. Sonnen is probably a better MMA wrestler than any version of Henderson.

That being said, I still find it hard to believe that wrestling worries or stance are the reasons Jones avoided this fight. I honestly think it is just a big "F-U" to Sonnen for running his mouth. Jones is basically saying that Sonnen's mouth may have gotten him the shots against Silva but it ain't getting him shit at 205. "Go fight Forest, bitch."

I'm OK with that. Sonnen turned in an absolute dud against Silva in the rematch,which lends credence to the idea that his first performance was more testosterone than skill. I hate the idea that he could land a 205 title shot against Jones all really based on a juiced up initial performance against Silva.

On the other hand, I stick by my claim that Jones is becoming a bit of a diva. First he cries about not wanting to fight Machida again because it's too much risk and too little reward. And then he turns down an absolutely easy fight against Sonnen just to stick it to Chael. Make no mistake, Sonnen was an incredibly easy fight for Bones. Sonnen's only weapon, his wrestling, takes a kryptonite hit at 205. Jones knows it. MMA fans know it.

But for me, the big news is that a UFC Champion turned down a fight with any challenger. When has it EVER happened? Some will say Jones is paving the way for fighters taking more control of their careers and escaping the clutches of the UFC's slave-like dominance. Unfortunately, as a fan, it worries me that it might start a downhill slide toward the boxing model wherein fighters avoid any fight they don't think pays enough, generates enough publicity or adds a big enough notch to their legacy or ranking.

Good post, I pretty much agree with all of it.

And yeah I've been saying for a while, the one thing I prefer about MMA to boxing is that everyone fights everyone. It's the best thing about the UFC model and monopoly actually, that fighters don't get protected or get to act like little girls, avoiding one another, quibbling over terms etc.

By the way, for the record, Belfort is far less deserving than Sonnen which further baffles me about Jones choosing not to fight Sonnen.

The funny thing is the way Greg Jackson spins it, it sounds 100% like ducking.

"Sonnen is a great fighter".... "Sonnen is prepared"..... "Jones hasn't trained for Sonnen"..

I personally don't think any of those are the real reason, but if you believe Jackson and Jones, it's clearly ducking no matter how you define the term.

 

Personally I couldn't care less about Dana's feelings. As a fan it just pisses me off that a champion, in shape and ready for a fight, would turn down any fight at his weight.

And let's not minimize the fact that the UFC has soared in popularity, as has its fighters, because fans love that fighters always step up and fill shows. The history of guys getting injured and replaced is very deep in the UFC. Jones shit on that.

Again, I have to be careful here because I don't support the UFC throwing Sonnen in the cage if there was ANYONE else that was willing to step up. Sonnen does NOT deserve a shot, but to keep the card alive, it wouldn't be the most undeserved fight in UFC history.

 

sonnen is a fraud. imo he lost both of his fights this year. its a total mismatch. if sonnen didnt do interviews nobody would know who he is. his fighting skills are mediocre. if anything he should be grateful jones turned him down. he doesnt lose another title fight and can run his mouth on how jones is scared.
