One of the best films I have ever seen. A very powerfull movie.

It's overrated.
A movie that was a blueprint for middle-aged Spacey-men everywhere who thought they were 'the money' with the girl-next-door.

And the girl-next-door turned out to be Mena Suvari...who went on to do what?
Fuck-all.

The only redeeming quality of this film is Thora Birch displaying her beautiful natural tetas by the window. I was truly bored by this crappy movie and still can't see how it beat Saving Private Ryan as best movie of the year. Mena Suvari went on to be fuck material in American Pie, a more entertaining film. And Wes Bentley...oh yeah he was in The Hunger Games.

 

Better than Saving Private Ryan?

 

Well, I don't think it should have received Best Picture. I've always thought The Green Mile deserved best picture that year. Or perhaps even The Insider.

American Beauty is a very good movie though. 8/8.5/10

It's not nearly as bad as the previous year when that steaming pile of shit movie Shakespear in Love won over Saving Private Ryan.

 

You have the wrong year.

AB went up against The Green Mile, The Insider, and some other movie for best picture.

Shakespear in Love won over SPR, which is pathetic.

American Beauty is 5 light years better than Shakespear in Love.

 

A pretentious and ridiculous film

 

Oops my bad. But the same year American Beauty was released two better movies did not even got nominated: The Matrix and Fight Club.

 

I liked it and found it an enjoyable movie.

I don't get people who dislike films simply because it got such great reviews their only critique is to call it overrated. Or they nitpick things like its pretentious, or maybe they just dislike it to be different. Forgive me if I'm calling people out here but unless you can either sit here and say your not fond of dramas or at least give me a substantive reason for not liking this film, I'm simply going to have to call bullshit on some of you. This was an outstanding film and deserved every accolade it received. Also if it had beaten out Saving Private Ryan I would have had no complaint with that. I'm not saying one film is better than the other just that they were both close enough in being something fresh and new that both deserved to win. But fact is that all films no matter how great have their biased haters sitting on the sidelines nitpicking to death. This film is no different.

 

You only think it was a very good movie.
The rest of us know it wasn't.

 

Mena Suvari is 1 of the Hotter FLAT Chested Women REED's Ever Seen & Thora Burch has an AMAZING Rack..."American Beauty" Isn't REED's Favorite Flick or Anything, but he NEVER Minds Watching it...

My abiding memory of the film is that Suavari has the smallest pair of titties I have ever seen on a chick. They were unbelievably flat.

I liked it a lot.

Spacey and Benning were both great in it, as was Chris Cooper.

 

I also found it quite boring.
In fact, I remember halfway through thinking, "why/how the hell has this caught eveyone's attention and being held up as some modern-day masterpiece"?? :scratcher:

 

Well since you asked I'll tell you why I didn't like it:
1. The narration at the beginning BLOWS the ending. Right from the start Spacey tells the audience he will be dead. Good way to ruin your film, Mr. director!
2. The movie had this semi-comic tone that didn't work for me. I didn't smile once with the 'jokes' and the 'serious drama' scenes were ruined by the semi-comic tone.
3. I didn't get the obsession of Spacey's character with the skeletical Mena Suvari. Sure everybody has their own tastes, but Suvari never did it for me. I accepted it just for the sake of resignating to the filmmakers 'vision' of an american beauty.
4. Wes Bentley character is half cooked. Sure he has some daddy issues, but what was the 'magic' of that whole sequence dedicated to a plastic bag floating on a street?
5. The 'kiss & kill you' scene was kinda of 'WTF'?
Spacey did a good job as usual, Benning was in comedic mode, Thora Birch's rack is epic and the whole movie sucks.
