Good question. My first instinct is 'no', but that isn't to rule it out. Vargas is quite allot bigger than either Vasquez or the Oscar Pernel fought though.
I don't think so. Vargas is not only a big 154 pounder, but fairly athletic and not easy to discourage. It's not like Pea has the firepower to take advantage of Nando's main weakness.
Yeah, interesting fight (to me), but I don't see it happening either. Vargas is too big and has too high of a workrate.. I'd take Vargas by decision.
TOTTTTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLl MISMATCH if they found 100 rounds Pea would win 100 rounds
Might be a bridge too far for Pete, but I don't think it's a no-doubt-about-it thing for Vargas. He was definitely a more skillful, athletic fighter than Vazquez, though, for sure. Vazquez was sturdy and hit hard, but was basically a gritty puncher with very average skills and speed. Vargas was pretty quick and more imaginative. Not as good a one-shot puncher, probably, but still more versatile offensively and certainly defensively. I think Whitaker could hit sharply enough, especially on a less than stellar chin like Vargas', to keep him honest, but Vargas should be able to outmuscle him. I'd go with 'Nando by decision in a fairly interesting match.
Vargas had a solid chin until Tito ruined it. I don't think Pea's punches would deter the pre-Tito Vargas at all.
mythology he was never hit by a serious puncher until Trinidad Ike at 154 was no big hitter and he definitely hurt Vargas pre-Tito
Ike hit a HELLUVA lot harder than Pea, however. And Ike buzzed Vargas pretty good in the 9th round, but it's not like Nando was in serious trouble. Plus, I said his chin was SOLID. Not anything special. Pea wouldn't buzz him.
Pea would hit him probably 10 times more OFTEN than Quartey managed Everyone acts like Whitaker hit like Paul Spadafora... it's ridiculous... he'd have been run out of the ring by the likes of Vazquez and De La Hoya if he couldn't get their respect. He did get it and those guys had way, way better chins than Vargas
Vargas was one of the stupidest big name fighters I've seen in years. I really think Pea would do enough. 6-5-1
and Victor Ortiz Vargas was really only stupid in terms of his willingness to brawl when he could have boxed instead. Not sure that's going to hurt him against Whitaker..
I dunno how I forgot about Victoria. Ortiz, and Khan are the two most retarded fighters to ever hit cable TV boxing. Both are just incredibly stupid fighters, and incredibly stupid people in general.
No, Vargas was a fool. He got all caught up in this Aztec Brown Bastard Bullshit and had it in his head that he was a "Real Mexican" and that Oscar was a fraud and a fake. His performance vs Trinidad was one of utter stupidity- down twice in the first by a brace of hooks that no composed competent fighter would have ever gotten hit by- and he then refused to take the full 5 when Trinidad hit him low. When the Oscar fight finally came around, he cheated and juiced and made a moron of himself, in addition to being outboxed, cut up floored and ultimately stopped by a guy who had a pitiful stoppage percentage at 154 and who had started his career many divisions removed from 154.
He gave Trinidad hell both when he was outboxing him and when he was fighting his fight, if Tito doesn't hit him low that fight potentially ends by KO for Vargas. The shot, juiced up version who fought Oscar wasn't the same fighter, Oscar ducked him shamelessly for years until he felt Vargas was done. And he still gave DLH a good fight for 11 rounds. No idea what you're talking about re: pitiful stoppage percentage at 154, the guy only had like 3-4 fights at 154 and could still crack at the weight. He was not much smaller than Vargas. Whitaker doesn't have the attributes to take advantage of Vargas' primary weaknesses, which were his chin and his show-machismo-at-all-costs attitude. I still say Vargas takes it.
Sure Vargas was a bit of an idiot and a hothead, but as a boxer he wasn't that stupid at all. He had skill actually, and way more ringsmarts than the kind of idiots he is being compared to.
#ucking bich lok no wey coaked pea beeted vargis vargis to big to strong to powrefel he wuid beeted pea and cemanted as gratist aztech of are times
Vazquez was pretty competitive with Whitaker and he doesn't have Nando's skill set. He (Nando) probably didn't have the same one shot power but it wouldn't matter. I think Vargas gets there more than Vazguez did. That's all that's important really. At 154 Pernell didn't have the foot speed to stick and move as much. He'd have to be more stationary which the larger Vargas would certainly be able to take advantage of. It's not a white wash but i think Vargas should be able to win this without any controversy.
In truth, the left hooks Vargas got hit with were pretty quick and sharp. The first one in particular was a counter punch by Trinidad, where Tito slipped Vargas' jab and came up top with the hook. Vargas was able to outbox Tito in spots but ultimately Trinidad forced him to fight and the difference was Trinidad's punching power.
