Trinidad still knock Cotto out...and about Money..if the competition of the mid-late 1990 Welter were around in 2007 he would have NEVER moved to 147.
I see no scenario where Cotto beats Trinidad... I think if they fought 10 times, Felix Trinidad would knock him out 10 times They are both highly overrated fighters... Trinidad is MORE overrated because, unlike Cotto, there were some in the boxing biz, even after Hoya/Hopkins/Wright established a clear and undeniable trend, who made outrageous claims such as "P4P best Puerto Rican fighter ever"... Really? Not as long as Gomez/Ortiz/Benitez are classified as Puerto Ricans... The RING had him numero uno on their best Puerto Rican fighters of all-time list... an absolutely PREPOSTEROUS claim. I'll say this, head to head, I think Trinidad knocks Cotto out any way you slice it... Trinidad did beat some good fighters... Cotto beat some good fighters... Accomplishment-wise, defeated opposition wise, I don;t think there's much to separate them historically... So the only thing left to try and separate them is to imagine how a fight between them would have gone down... To me, Cotto is fucking clearly not capable of duplicating Hoya/Hopkins/Wright by a long shot... I would bet the farm on his getting knocked out... With nothing else left, I go with Trinidad as the answer to the poll question
Agree with Illu about Mayweather and 147... he'd have been making title defenses at 140 in 1997 without daring to take a step further... The difference in comp between then and now can be measured only in light years
No. Tito was better and greater. AND prime Tito would have KO'd the Floyd that Cotto fought at 154. I still don't think Cotto would have beaten Vargas at 154, let alone Tito. Cotto has NONE of the tools needed to beat Tito. NONE.
Cotto would stick and move and win a pretty comfortable decision over lead footed, fighting in mud Trinidad.
I can't believe this is even an argument. I admit that back in the days, Tito was overrated. Especially by those who were comparing him to all time greats like Robinson. Leonard, Duran, Hearns, etc. But as overrated as he was then, he's become underrated in much the same way now. I ask this, is there a guy that Cotto beat that Trinidad could not have beat??? Could Cotto beat Vargas?? Now as far as what De La Hoya did to Tito, there is no denying there is a strong argument Tito lost that fight, but would Cotto have done any better against Oscar??... Personally, I think a prime De La Hoya stops Cotto in similar fashion to how he stopped Vargas at 154. Tito pressured Oscar all night and forced him to run to avoid the exchanges in the latter rounds. Hopkins no need to mention because Cotto simply is not capable of pulling off what B-Hop did. In a match up between the two, Trinidad is bigger, stronger, quicker hands, more powerful with either hand, and better stamina. Cotto is a better boxer but he's slower and not really defensively great. He would be hit often by Trinidad. And I just don't think he can survive it. I wouldn't be surprised if Trinidad hurts him seriously with the first big left hook he lands. Not to mention how open Cotto is to the left uppercut inside, a weapon Trinidad had in spades. Trinidad KO 8
If you have some boxing ability and decent footwork, Tito is pretty much fucked. Jesus, all it took with Winky was a consistent jab and earmuffs to win all 12 rounds ::
Yes I do. Watch the rematch with Plasterito. Plasterito is more relentless and throws more than Tito, and doesn't need to be as set to punch. Cotto moved almost constantly, landing sharp counters and picking him off with the jab. Cotto is capable of moving a lot. He doesn't have the fastest feet, but he has good, economical footwork, and is WAY lighter on his feet than Tito obviously. Tito needs to be set to punch, really set, like for a few seconds. Movement destroys him. The late rounds would get scary when Cotto started to tire, but ultimately I think he'd box and move his way to a comfortable decision.
Margarito even with his illegal wraps does not punch as hard nor is he as QUICK HANDED as Tito. Tito is also far more accurate and has better timing on his punches. Not to mention he is better on the inside than Margarito and he would be pushing Cotto back all night and keeping him against the ropes, forcing him to exchange punches. Cotto can box and move all he wants against Trinidad. But the bottom line is that he is not very mobile and defensively he is has never been very hard to find. He has been hurt and damn near out against lesser fighters than Trinidad, and has struggled against guys like old Mosley and had rough moments against RICARDO MAYORGA. You analyze this as a Trinidad-De La Hoya situation and Miguel Cotto does not have the skills nor the physical gifts that prime Oscar had to do what he did against Trinidad. Cotto's stamina is arguably worse than Oscar, and nor does he have the chin to take Trinidad's best punches. All he has over Trinidad is better movement. Tito has everything else in SPADES over him. Trinidad beat a superior fighter to Cotto in Fernando Vargas. Miguel is game as they come, but he is simply outgunned in a fight against Tito. Its really that simple.
Unless Cotto could channel the defensive reflexes of Benitez for one night, he ain't beating Tito. It doesn't matter how much Miggy tries to move, he's ALWAYS hittable. And WHEN (not if) Tito hits him, Cotto's chin simply isn't sturdy enough to handle Tito's power. At 154 I could see Tito blasting Cotto in the mid rounds honestly. That was Tito's prime, optimal weight. At 147 it's a more competitive fight, but Cotto still gets stopped late. Whoever said that neither one was good as Ortiz, and Benitez is correct though. Benitez would have had his way with both Tito, and Miggy.
Miggy would do the best he could until the inevitable happens (now in a puchers ring forget it Trinidad launches him all the way to Caguas)
Are we talking about Tito with his magic wraps, who could do bodily harm with punches that were blocked and didn't even land (see Tito/Thiam and Tito/Reid), or are we talking about the neutered version who couldn't punch for shit (see Tito/Wright)?
