[h=1]UFC prez says Machida-Henderson likely, scratches head at Machida-St-Pierre[/h]by Steven Marrocco and Matt Erickson on Sep 27, 2012 at 2:15 pm ET
[IMG]NOTTINGHAM, England – A light-heavyweight bout between ex-champs Lyoto Machida (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) and Dan Henderson (29-8 MMA, 6-2 UFC) is still in the works, UFC President Dana White today said.

"We're still working it all out," said White, who did not give a timetable for the proposed fight.

The matchup is widely expected to have title implications. But according to White, it's become suddenly difficult to find a title contender for current champ Jon Jones, who recently notched his fourth straight title defense.

The executive pointed to a recent interview Machida gave in which he said he'd be open to a fight at middleweight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

"Where the f--- did that come from?" White said. "(St-Pierre) and Anderson (Silva) makes all the sense in the world. Him and Machida makes no sense whatsoever.

"Doesn't that kind of tell you something? Everyone was looking for that No. 1 contender's spot, and suddenly no one wants to be the No. 1 contender in the light-heavyweight division? Pretty interesting."

Machida, who's previously hinted at a move to 185 pounds, was linked to Henderson after turning down a fight with Jones at UFC 152 on the basis that he didn't have enough time to prepare. The champ choked him unconscious when they first met at UFC 140 this past December.

Machida earned a title shot by knocking out Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 4 this past momnth, but White pumped the brakes on the opportunity after the fighter turned down Jones.

Henderson is currently recovering from a badly torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee that forced him to withdraw from a title fight at UFC 151 against Jones (which led to the UFC canceling the event). The decorated fighter previously told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he would be ready to fight by year's end, though he didn't know his opponent.

Jones, meanwhile, is recovering from an injury he sustained in a fight against Machida's replacement at UFC 152, Vitor Belfort. In the first round of their meeting, which took place Sept. 22 in Toronto, Belfort caught him in an armbar and hyperextended it before the champ was able to escape. He later told reporters he may be suffering from nerve damage, but White today said that the extent of the champ's injuries is unknown.

Most likely, though, Machida vs. Henderson will have taken place before Jones steps into the cage again.

Kinda sucks because if Machida wins then we're not getting Hendo Jones for a while if ever but I guess it makes sense depending on how long Jones will be out.

I'm with you Joony. Bad matchup and IMO, horrible decision for the UFC. Jones is hurt, Hendo is hurt. Let them both rehab, take their time, get healthy and fight each other. Hendo is one of the few 205'ers that has not fought Jones. Don't take that fight away from the fans. If Machida wants 185, great! Creates great matchups there. In the mean time, let some of these 205'ers bang it out. See who rises above. Bring up some newcomers. When Hendo/Jones happens, winner will have a distinct challenger.

Kinds of sucks for Henderson since I don't think he'll get past Machida, bad style match-up there and now Henderson will likely lose his title shot due to an injury.

I don't think Machida wants to go to 185 until Silva is gone. He doesn't want to fight Silva because they train or have trained together.

Hendo might knock Machida out. Shogun shashed him, I don't see why Hendo couldn't.

yeah, thats pretty well documented. But I can almost see these two flip flopping divisions. Just a total assumption of course. But regardless, even if Machida stays at 205, Hendo should pull a page out of Jon Jones' playbook and tell Dana he doesn't want to fight Machida, that he wants his title shot at Jones when they are both healthy.

I've been wanting Silva to move up to 205 for a while now and I thought that was the direction he was going when he took a few fights at 205. I would still like to see him at 205 and think he would do very well there, the only real challenging fight for him would be Jon Jones and I still give him a good chance of winning it because Silva is more well rounded, even if he would be giving up some size advantage. That would also free up the 185 division for guys like Rashad, Machida, and possibly GSP to move in and see how well they do there.

Totally different styles though, Hendo loads up and likes to throw that big right hand. Shogun is more of a volume striker, combinations and kicks that wears you down. He applied a lot of pressure to Machida, closed the distance and fought closer than Machida likes, I just don't see Dan being able to fight the same way. Anything is possible with Dan's right hand for sure, but Machida is pretty quick on his feet and its hard to land clean shots on him.

I do find it funny that no one wants to fight Jones. It seems like Hendo is the only one saying out loud he wants the fight.

Who's not wanting to fight him? There's only 3-4 guys right now in that division that even have a chance of beating him and he's already beaten them all except Henderson. I can understand Machida and Shogun turning down that fight on short notice, Shogun just came off another draining fight which he didn't look all that great and while Machida looked good in his fight, a few weeks isn't enough time to fully prepare for Jones when Jones had just had a full training camp in preperation for Henderson. Jones is fantastic for sure, but any fighter would be foolish to step in with Jones on short notice without a full training camp.

Chael just wanted another big pay day, but I have no doubt he that doesn't fear any fighter in the UFC.

Yeah, he wants to skip the whole earning his shot thing and jump right into a pay day. I'm sure there are a lot of guys who aren't at the top of the division who would take the fight.

"Earning it" has never been the UFC's number one priority when it comes to giving title shots. With that said, in the cage, Sonnen hasn't.

Sonnen's done more to earn it than Belfort and Vitor got a shot. The point is I agree with you. The UFC has given less worthy fighters title shots.

It is hard for me to believe that a 45 year old Henderson "badly tore" his MCL in August and will be ready to fight by the end of the year. If that's all true, TRT is a wonderful thing.

However, if I was recovering from a torn knee ligament, Jon Jones is the absolute last guy I'd want to fight. You probably want all your ligaments pretty tight before walking into the cage with Jones.

So what has Vitor done to earn it? Exactly.

Nothing, he was a replacement and I'm not saying he deserved it. You are saying Sonnen deserves a title shot. He doesn't and neither did Vitor.

Sure he does. When nobody wanted to fight, Sonnen stepped up. Jackson wouldnt have turned down the fight if he didnt think Sonnen was dangerous. So yeah, he earned that shot. Nobody else wanted it.

I couldn't agree more. With everything here in this post. I went to a local fight in Portland Oregon a couple weeks ago. Was hanging out with some freinds after the fights. Chris Leben was with us and he was kind of making fun of Sonnen but saying how even after this last loss to Silva, Sonnen still believes he's better than Silva. He contends he has beat Silva 5 out of the 7 rounds they have fought. He said how Silva knows how to get lucky lol. As funny as it sounds to the rest of the world, Sonnen believes it. He truly thinks he's the best fighter on the planet. Leben told me we will start hearing Sonnen call out GSP soon.

Yea, it takes that sort of self belief to be one of the best in the world. Even the guys that come-off as humble probably deep down have a strong self belief that they can beat anyone on any given day. Some are just more outspoken about it than others. Chael is one of those rare breeds though that also knows how to market himself as well and make more money than many top fighters.

Yeah man, Spot on. REED has said on here many times how he loves and arrogant fighter. I'm the same way. I want a guy who believes he's gonna whup that ass. There is a fine line of being "un-classy", and Chael probably crosses into that at times. But I don't get these guys who go in "hoping" to win.

Chael actually said in an interview before the second Silva fight that he doesn't just want a shot at the title, he wants the title. He said too many times he's heard fighters ask for a title shot, I think he said something to the effect that they're already beaten mentally if they have that mentality. He makes a good point. Its probably subtle thing, but most fighters that are asking for a shot at the title may have some doubt about whether they can actually pull it off, that doubt may me all that it takes to lose focus in a fight when it doesn't go your way.

Chris Weidman also offered to step in to face Jones. He's actually coming off a win, unlike your boyfriend Chael.
