I personally don't think he should be given a title shot right away. Let him prove his juiced up ass a bit first. Put him with Carwin vs Nelson winner. What do you guys think ?
He'll most likely get a shot at JDS when he comes back, Nelson or Carwin isn't likely to happen. Overeem is still too marketable to risk him losing to anyone before getting a shot at JDS.
The UFC doesnt protect fighters. I doubt he gets a shot a title right away. Dana is still pretty pissed im sure.
Listen you son of a bitch, its about business and big dollas, Overeem is marketable even when he comes back, he wasn't coming off a loss or anything, just suspension. Its really no different than Nick Diaz getting a title shot coming into the UFC this last time without having to fight anyone first. It didn't work out that way for him due to his own stupidity but its the same principle. Overeem was the Strikeforce heavyweight champ, he beat Brock Lesnar in his first UFC fight in impressive fashion and people won't soon forget that. I just don't think Dana is ever as mad as he makes himself out to be when it comes to big money on the table.
the logical choice here is the winner of nelson/carwin. i wouldnt mind seeing him fight the winner of silva/browne either.
Mr Browning, why is that the logical choice? All four of those opponents are a step backwards for Overeem.
who else is there to fight? no one wants to see a third fight vs. werdum. only other viable contenders are struve and maybe noguiera (if he somehow doesn't injur himself in training) or mir. the heavy division isn't very deep. most websites would probably list browne/struve/silva in the bottom top 10. barnett and cormier haven't been signed over to ufc yet. so unless overeem gets an immediate title shot, i can't think of anyone else for him to fight.
The UFC is all about making money. Overeem screwed shit up with his PED bullshit. He cost them money straight up. Now they are going to get their money back. He is marketable and so they can sell a comeback fight vs Carwin/Nelson as a PPV main event. And regardless if he wins or loses the winner gets another PPV fight vs the champ. I don't see with all the bad press of PED's, Dana gives him a shot at the title straight out the gate. So yes the logical fight would be a step backward from a title shot. Thats kind of the deal when you embarass yourself running out of a courtroom at the talk of a pisstest
Overeem beat friggin Paul Buentello for the title. It's was practically handed to him on a silver platter.
But he was the SF heavyweight champ and he wasn't beaten in the SF tournament either. He came to the UFC and beat up Lesnar. The guy was on a roll before getting busted.
He won the title in 2007 and didn't defend it until 2010. Fought a bunch of bums in between and has only really beaten two decent guys since. Werdum and Lesnar. He looked like garbage in the Werdum fight.
Kind of hard to look good against a guy that kept falling down and wanting Overeem to lay in his guard. Blame Werdum for that shitty fight, not Overeem.
Brett Rogers, Todd Duffee, Fabrico Werdum, Brock Lesnar. All this while winning the K-1 world championship as well. He hasn't lost in 5 years and has looked pretty solid. He's marketable whether you or anyone else likes that or not. Sometimes I think you guys assume when someone is talking business it must mean they're in love with that fighter. I never said Overeem was going to beat JDS or even that he'll beat any of the other top 5 in the UFC, I simply said he's going to make money for the UFC when he's able to fight again.
Rogers was coming off a Loss, Duffee was coming off a Loss, Lesner was coming off a loss. The werdum fight was a joke. That isnt a roll. It's bullshit.
OK man, that's why every MMA fan out there was ready for him to fight JDS. Because he's an undeserving bum.
A roll. LOL.. Show me another Top 10 HW that's fought as much garbage as Overeem over the last 4 years. I honestly can't believe someone mentioned Bum Rogers and Todd Duffee as names on a "ROLL".. Why not just include Goodridge, Sylvester, Thompson and Fujita? That's honestly funny. Overeem earned his title shot by beating Lesnar in a title elimination bout so I have no problem with the originally scheduled JDS-Overeem bout. The problem is that Overeem blew it by cheating. He didn't get injured. He didn't miss weight. He got busted for juicing after previously fleeing the country to avoid being tested. You shouldn't reward a cheater by giving him an immediate title shot when he returns from suspension. That's crazy. He needs to work his way back up. He should not immediately be positioned ahead of guys like Struve, Werdum, or Cormier.
FYI, Cormier isn't in the UFC yet, he's got to fight once more under SF and again, they aren't going to risk Overeem getting a loss before getting a shot at JDS.
I agree that they probably don't wanna blow a big fight with JDS and risk Overeem losing especially given the fact that besides Cormier it's really thin on challengers for JDS. But at the same time Overeem blew it big time. He almost destroyed a whole card by breaking a promise to Dana that he's gonna pass so I figure a part of Dana will wanna punish Overeem but the other part of Dana the money hungry part will save Overeem for JDS. I will go with the money hungry part winning.
Won't deny that at all, deserving and marketable are two different things though and they don't always go together. Sadly, until Cormier gets in the UFC, without a ton of promotion, he just isn't as marketable as Overeem yet. Do I think Cormier is better? Yes. Do I think Cormier is more deserving? Yes. I've already stated in a few threads that I think Cormier is the ONLY heavyweight right now that has a chance to upset JDS. Winning the SF Tournament against the guys he had to face to do it was more than enough proof for me that he's the real deal and he's accomplished enough to be ranked in the top 3 right now.
