[h=1]White: Overeem meets Dos Santos-Velasquez winner, possibly in March or April[/h] by Matt Erickson and John Morgan on Oct 14, 2012 at 3:55 am ET
[IMG]RIO DE JANEIRO – Not that either will be looking past the other, but at least Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez can be reasonably sure of their potential next assignment if they win in December.

The winner between heavyweight champion Dos Santos (15-1 MMA, 9-0 UFC) and Velasquez (10-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) will face former No. 1 contender Alistair Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC), perhaps as early as March or April.

UFC President Dana White laid out the still very loose plan early Sunday following the post-event news conference for UFC 153, which took place in Rio de Janeiro.

"The winner of that fight will fight Overeem (in March or April)," White said.

Dos Santos and former champ Velasquez meet in the main event of UFC 155, which takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Dos Santos was scheduled to face Overeem this past May, but Overeem tested for elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone levels and was essentially suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for nine months. At UFC 146, Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir, while Velasquez beat Antonio Silva to become the top contender with Overeem unavailable at least until the end of 2012.

In August, White said at a recent meeting with Dos Santos, the champ told him he would prefer to face Overeem instead of Velasquez.

"He's the nicest guy in the world," White said of Dos Santos. "But he said, 'I have nothing but respect for Cain Velasquez. I like him as a person and as a fighter, and I think he deserves the shot at the title. But I do not want to fight him,' which is not what he said a month ago.

"He said, 'Alistair Overeem is a punk. He's got a big mouth, and he's been saying lots of bad things about me, and I want to knock him out. I want to knock him out now.'"

Overeem is eligible to reapply for a license with the NSAC starting Dec. 27. There is virtually no shot of Overeem getting licensed to fight on the Dec. 29 show.

Dos Santos this past November knocked out Velasquez to win the title at UFC on FOX 1.

In July, Overeem told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Dos Santos was afraid to fight him .

"He can talk all he wants," Overeem said. "I know he's very happy that fight didn't happen, and I know he's afraid to fight me. He also knows that I'm the biggest threat out there to him. He knows when he fights me, there's no escape from it.

"He's going to hit and run, or he's going to go down. Either way, he's going to leave that octagon a loser."

That talked riled up Dos Santos, and White said he was at least considered his champion's request to fight Overeem and not Velasquez. But the original plan that was hatched after UFC 146 will remain intact.

I am OK with being in the miniority here, but there is no way a steroid cheat should return from a suspension and immediately fight for the title.

My point isn't about the most marketable or the best challenge, it's on principal alone. I understand Overeem will be an easy sell and a helluva fight. I just think it sends the wrong message.

It just isn't right when there are guys winning fights and not testing positive.

    Oh well.

It would be too funny if Overeem fails another one of those random tests and blows another card for the UFC.

two things that could happen here. overeem will either get caught again or the winner of jds/cain will be injured, postponing the bout till mid/late 2013.

if they're allowed to fight, then they fight. saying ufc not wanting to be a legit sport is like saying baseball, boxing, cycling, and many other sports aren't legit.

Name a guy in boxing that got a title shot directly following a suspension for steroids. Sure people in other sports get popped but they aren't rewarded with a title shot.

first off, overeem was caught during a random drug test prior to the event taking place and in a state which he didn't even have a license in. it was an odd circumstance, in which you should actually applaud ufc and the commission for doing. has that ever happened in boxing?

and to answer your question, i can't think of any, but i do recall fernando vargas headlining an hbo fight after failing the drug test vs. oscar and then getting a title shot after beating rivera.

how about margarito? do you think he really needed that tune up in mexico prior to getting a shot at a vacant title vs. pacquiao?

Overeem was ordered to take random tests after he FLED THE COUNTRY to avoid a drug test. He was caught in one of the random ordered tests. To me that makes it even worse.

ufc is a company. they do whatever they want as long as their fighters are allowed to fight. they don't have a legitimate ranking system. this ain't tennis.

if mayweather decides to join ufc and gets a title shot vs. benson henderson, are you going to watch or boycott since he doesnt deserve a title shot?

overeem vs. the winner of jds/cain is a fight most fans want to see and just about the only damn meaningful heavyweight collision left to see.

Guys, do any of you really believe that the UFC or Dana White gives a shit about steroid use? The athletic commissions don't like users and they deal out the fines, Dana and the UFC realize its part of the sport and its not easily controlled so why bother wasting tons of money and resources and just accept it? That's their mentality. Sure you'll hear Dana make a statement here and there about steroid users and how it's not fair or some other BS statement which gives the appearance that he cares to pacify mainstream media into thinking the UFC doesn't condone it. The fact is Dana himself has made too many contradictory statements about steroids and UFC users to make me believe he really is that concerned. Dana could be doing a LOT more to weed out(no pun intended) the steroids users but he's not, he's basically telling fighters that you're a dummy if you get caught, but basically leaving the whole dilemma to the athletic commissions to deal with because it doesn't cost him anything to allow them to control it. He figures if a guy passes the test, he's good to go, no need to point fingers or do anything more than that. And if a guy fails, the athletic commission dishes out the punishment and Dana welcomes them back with open arms just as long as they're still marketable. Marquardt has been busted many times, yet Dana is still willing to let him fight for SF which is Zuffa owned and he's said that Marquardt's a nice guy and if he can stay clean and put together some wins outside the UFC, he'll take him back. This is exactly the contradictory actions that leads me to believe he don't give a shit about steroids as long as it doesn't cost him any money.

    Frans Botha IBF

James Toney IBA I shouldn't list this because the IBA doesn't count, but Toney did get a WBC shot after the IBA fight in his next fight.

Has anyone on here claimed the UFC is cracking down on drug cheats?

One quick glance at their roster and the opposite becomes crystal clear.
