  1. By someone who was there that fateful day:
"Then came the finale: The Drum Battle.
Neil set up stage right to Will Calhoun's stage left, and then the entire crowd wanted to see Neil flex his muscles and give 'em what they came for, validation that Neil was God, the next Buddy Rich, the reason we all picked up the drumsticks and emulated most of our drumming lives.

Only thing is it didn't happen that way.

Everyone in the crowd watched our hero get beat at his own game by someone who no one at the time, actually revered as his competition or equal.

To describe what happened, On a scale of 1 to 10, Neil threw out an 8. We cheered Neil's display, but we knew he was capable of more, and was just starting slow. Wil countered with what could be considered a matched 8, but had us impressed none the less.
Neil countered with an 8.5, turing it up a notch, generating more crowd approval, but was then met with an avalanche which left us all in stunned silence. Will opened a can of whoop ass, and played the sickest improvs I have ever seen. Neil tried to counter, and couldn't match the speed, intensity, groove, originality, or anything that Will threw out. We pleaded for Neil to win, offering words of confidence and adolation in between the machine gun power of the drum battle, but it didn't matter. Wil stole the show. Neil's started repeating measures, and started to slow up, ending to a stunned smattering of applause. Then Will pulled the Ivan Drago punch on Apollo Creed, and ended with a blister of eclectic fills, eye catching flashiness, funk and seasoned rudiments flying across the set, injecting energy in a room drained of it.

It was over now. Neil had lost."

Pantera rocks, strangely I also love me some blues! That's what got me playing guitar, I may play metal mostly, but all my lead stuff is heavily blues influenced. I like solos with soul, not pure wankery.

They don't exist anymore due to Dime Bag being killed on stage. How fucked is that?

My brother met Dime Bag and Vinnie Paul in burger king one night after a gig of theirs and he bought them both a meal and had a chat about music :bears:

Are you a fan of Pantera?

  18. ...who then go and shoot folks.

Anyway, Pantera, yeah like you said and with a guitarist (RIP), whose talent clearly didn't get the recognition it deserved because of that style of music...

Nah, mate. I'm not sure I'm a fan of a single thing from the American south, tbh. Apart from REED.

I meant Sean REED tho

  23. Who the fuck wants to 3/4 of a band with the surviving members in their mid-60s, playing a one-off concert at for the first time in 25 years at the most horrendous venue in the UK?

Zeppelin were done in 1977 - fuck knows...

I don't know how someone puts on "Ten Years Gone" on the headphones, absorbs all of that melody and harmony, all of that ingenious layering of instrumentation that creates this shimmering, otherworldly ambiance and says "pffft... this is shite" and then switches the record to Lou Reed bellowing his way through "A Perfect Day" and says "YES! That's the ticket!"

You are such a brilliant person, Hut, and your very presence on this Earth inspires me to believe that there are actually some great people out there, but you are as a deaf as Helen Keller, to me:lol::cheers:

Zeppelin are probably my most hated 'highly thought of' band. I'd rather listen to Aqua's 'Barbie girl' on loop than sit through one of their albums the whole way through. I'll go as far as to say the possibility of sitting through 'Wings' entire back catalogue might appeal more.

I've seen bits and bobs - they sound great but had to tune down around 50 octaves so Plant could hit the notes.
