 I quite liked the tune, too. Sounds like if James Hetfield covered something off Trout Mask Replica

I don't mind Santana but he's not nearly of the same caliber as Clapton who is probably the best overall guitar player in the world today. The man is legendary.

And yet, to think, this all came about The Who > Led Zeppelin.
    Nicely, side-stepped, cdogg.
I do agree somewhat with the 'quintessential rock'n'roll' argument, but with The Who, a heavy emphasis on the 'rock' thing. I suppose 'quintessential rock'n'roll' is something you hear during the first 20-30 seconds of The Rolling Stones' 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking' (I know you name-checked this earlier). To be fair, you only find that kind of thing on a live performance by The Who - never in the studio.
But what sets them apart from the Stones, is that rock-music, rock'n'roll music was an 'object' rather than a 'lifestyle'.
Imagine The Who trying to play 'Rip This Joint' or even 'Shattered'? Ugh.

I can't see why you dis Townshend so much. IMO, he's in the category of 'Pop Composer Master of The Spirit' (along with say, Ray Davies and John Lennon), rather than 'Pop Composer Master of Form' (Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson)

Moving on: Daltrey - often copied, never bettered but always the father of the big-brawny-heroic-anthem-delivery.You want that or Plant's sexual-squealing? (don''t answer that, boy)
Entwhistle - anyone convince you of the importance/potential of bass guitar? 'Nuff said.
Moon - bashing? I think he could bash, thrash and crash. And guess what? John Coltrane could only blow.

(back to Townshend - to be blunt about it, and drawling an underscore, one person just can't write as much good music as two people can, unless that one person is Frank Zappa and Frank Zappa's idea of "good music" was an entirely different thing altogether. )

    Folk-Rock.
Generally, folk-rock never hits my radar - I have stuff by The Byrds, Fairport Convention, Buffalo Springfield, etc

I don't like the 'indie-aspect' of Mumford & Sons and I bypassed Fleet Foxes for the same reason I've not really paid any attention to them, but Im going on your reccomendation and I'll be downloading some tonight.

Download just about anything from their first CD Sigh No More and start there. Yes, they've been labled as folk-rock and indie and I've seen interviews with them where they say they hate to be labled as anything really. I don't normally get into that genre either but those guys are incrediby talented and I never ever miss a chance to recommend them since I heard them for the first time about 6 months ago. I've become a huge fan of their music.

    Frank Zappa on other guitarists:

    Interviewer: Chuck Berry?
Frank Zappa: Chuck Berry? Well, I used to like Chuck Berry when I was in High School. Songs like "Havana Mill" and "Wee Wee Hours" which were the flip sides of the hits that he had - the more bluesy things. His main innovation besides that duck walk choreography was the multiple string guitar solos - the lines were harmonizing because he was playing on two strings at once.

    Interviewer: B.B King?
Frank Zappa: I don't like B.B. I saw him on television before I went on this tour and he was still blue.

    Interviewer: Keith Richard?
Frank Zappa: I don't know anything about Keith Richard.

    Interviewer: Jimi Hendrix?
Frank Zappa: I knew Jimi and I think that the best thing you could say about Jimi was: there was a person who shouldn't use drugs.

    Interviewer: John McLaughlin?
Frank Zappa: I met John. I think he's an astounding great guitar player and I think that he's probably done a lot to educate American audiences to some aspects of Eastern music that they wouldn't have come into contact with before.

    Interviewer: Lowell George?
Frank Zappa: There's another guy who shouldn't use drugs.

    Interviewer: Eric Clapton?
Frank Zappa: I know Eric, I haven't seen him in years and years. There's another guy who shouldn't use drugs.

    Interviewer: Jeff Beck?
Frank Zappa: One of my favorite guitar players on the planet. From a melodic standpoint and just in terms of the conception of what he plays, he's fabulous. I like Jeff.

    Interviewer: Rory Gallagher?
Frank Zappa: We worked 2 jobs with Rory Gallagher on this tour and, uh......[long pause]... he's still playing the blues.

    Interviewer: Jimmy Page?
Frank Zappa: I don't know anything about Jimmy Page.

    Interviewer: Jerry Garcia?
Frank Zappa: We did one concert with Garcia on this tour but we were the opening act and I didn't see any of his set.

    Interviewer: Pete Townshend?
Frank Zappa: I've met Pete but I don't know what I can say about his guitar playing.

    Interviewer: Robert Fripp?
Frank Zappa: King Crimson? I've never heard their records.

    Interviewer: Ritchie Blackmore?
Frank Zappa: I have met Ritchie too, and....he's great at what he does but I'm not really familiar with the work of these people because you have to understand I'm not a pop consumer and I don't listen to a lot of these.

    Interviewer: Yes, um, Carlos Santana?
Frank Zappa: We worked with Carlos Santana on Cologne in 1980 or 81. In fact, we did one piece called "The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression."
    Go figure.

Interviewer: I don't expect you know Eddie Van Halen.
Frank Zappa: I do know Eddie. He comes over to the house because he hangs out with my son.
Interviewer: I see. But do you know him as a guitar player?
Frank Zappa: Oh yeah. He and my son play together and he's fabulous, but there's another guy who shouldn't use drugs.

Interviewer: I presume you don't know The Edge - from U2?
    Frank Zappa: The Edge?
    Interviewer: Yeah.
    Frank Zappa: No.

Interviewer: What would be your thoughts on the original guitar playing of the Mothers, i.e. yourself?
Frank Zappa: Well, there's one other guy whose work I know who should be included in that list who I respect and that's Allan Holdsworth.

Zappa made some of the very best and very worst music ever... His best music is some of my most favorite on Earth

Pretty fascinating character... equal parts endearing and infuriating

For the record, I'm not talking about those weird ass guitar players that can shred but really can't make a song at all, like a Yngwie Malmsteen. Sure he's technically good, but its not what I would call music.

Do you play the guitar, man?

Eric Clapton was the third best guitarist in the Yardbirds, for fuck's sake

There are guys within a mile or two from your house who play better than he does

I've never heard a single Eric Clapton solo that I couldn't easily play myself

I do and I have many friends that play guitar and have for a long time and they all respect Clapton immensely. If you claim you can play anything Clapton can, then you're clearly a legendary guitarist, kudos to you.

when did they start playing, last year?

I've never encountered a long-time guitarist who couldn't easily navigate "Layla", for example

Seriously, there's nothing remotely amazing about Clapton.

I'm not a legendary guitarist. I'd rate myself as basically solid for someone with 26 years experience. I should be a lot better than I am, but I am lazy.

no, he was an exceedingly talented blues guitarist

never liked his music and I hated his voice, but he could definitely play... he was far better than Eric Clapton
