The kick carlos landed has been given much more impact by rogan than it really had. GSP dominated after the kick and before the kick.
Despite that high kick, I thought Condit looked like a surprisingly sloppy striker against someone as sharp and savvy as GSP.
credit to GSP, that was his first fight in years that had me entertained. Still a little bit too much blanket, especially after he got hurt in the 3rd, but overall, an very solid fight.
And boy does Sakara makes it hard for his fans. I never expected him to be able to crush Cote this early yet he fumbled it all with the illegal shots ( even though this is a fucking ridiculous rule ). Still, the fight should definitively be a no contest as the foul was clearly non-intentionnal
Agreed, I like him but that's my concern in every one of his fights. He just seems to get stunned/hurt so easily. That KO on saturday was absurd, it was a clip, a glancing blow at best. His chin is glass.
Yep he was nowhere near as safety first as usual. I think his gameplan was to stun Condit and take him out of his gameplan by coming out aggressive in the opening seconds, and it worked. You could tell Condit wasn't expecting that. Also you have to admit, Joosp did pass somewhat of a gut check. He was cut up, hurt by the kick etc, but he didn't seem to want to bitch out of the fight.
Regardless of what you think about Kampmann's chin, I think Hendricks eliminated any doubt about who the #1 challenger is at 170 pounds. I'm a big Nick Diaz fan, but Hendricks deserves the next shot at GSP provided the "superfight" doesn't happen. Terrible fight by Condit. He was sloppy and horribly inaccurate with his strikes. Greg Jackson is well on his way to ruining another aggressive fighter. That style worked against Nick Diaz but it looked like shit against GSP.
I'm glad someone agrees with me. Condit's striking looked sloppy as fuck, and slow. To be honest though Trpl, I think it was mainly due to him being in against a faster, technically superior fighter. It just showed his striking up as being not as good as we thought.
Condit fought bravely, I knew GSP would resort to wrestling to win. Regardless of all the talk about him trying to be a more exciting fighter, he knew he had an advantage there and used it almost the whole fight. What I didn't really expect was that Condit wouldn't be able to do more from his back, I expected more sub attempts but that could just be a credit to GSP's ground game as it is simply superb. Condit almost pulled out a flash KO, I think he let GSP off the hook a bit but I think he was worried about burning himself out. To GSP's credit, he recovered but his legs looked shaky when he stood up after the knockdown. That being said, with a laser precision striker like Silva, GSP won't likely see the final bell before Silva finishes him with strikes. Hendricks pulled out another crazy one punch KO, even though I picked him to win, I'm still left a little unsure about his abilities against top notch competition outside of the first round. Those KO's are great to watch and certainly make fans excited, but certainly he won't be able to do that to every fighter, and then question is, how does he win after that. The problem I have with fighters that get a string of lucky KO's is that it usually ruins them because they fall in love with landing that one shot and forget about their other skills. Lawlor got cheated, nothing more to it, He won, everyone knew it, even the Canadian fans boo'd Carmont when the decision was announced. Ring vs Philippou cancelled, hmm. Hominick is now on my officially shot list. After a great and gutsy performance against Aldo, he's looked terrible ever since then. I was willing to write off his last performance because his trainer had recently died but he's still not looking like the Hominick that was making a title run up until he fought Aldo. I'm not picking Hominick again unless he's in against a scrub.
I think Hendricks vs Diaz would be a great fight in Feb-Mar of 2013 for the winner to get the next title shot.
No doubt that GSP ability had a lot to do with it. I just like Condit's old, aggressive and far less cautious style. Backing up and counter punching doesn't sit well with me given how much of a seek and destroy type of fighter Condit was previously.
gsp's aggression won him that fight. he wasn't scared to trade and backed condit up closer to the cage to set up his takedowns. although it was one sided, i still thought it was entertaining to watch. hendricks can punch hard and he seems to have perfected his hook when his opponents are stepping backwards. it was the same shit he landed on fitch.
Jesus, it didn't look like a particularly tough fight for Joosp. How the hell did he even get that bashed up?
GSP took most of that damage in the 3rd round when he got dropped. Between the high kick to the head and Condit's fists and elbows while he was on top of GSP, it just goes to show Condit can do quite a bit of damage quickly, he just needed more opportunities which didn't come very often with GSP's superb wrestling and top control.
I was thinking it had to be elbows. GSP seemed to be rolling and deflecting a lot of the damage, but I guess a good amount got through, and elbows are just brutal.
Johnny Hendricks can fall back on wrestling if his striking doesn't work. He's pretty much Ben Askren's wrestling equal and beat him in the only match I've seen between them. I think it was between high school and college.
WOW!!!... REED has Yet to SEE the Fight but is Glad GSP Won...In a Lb for Lb Sense, is it Safe to Say GSP has CLOSED the Gap on Silva & Jones, while WIDENING the Gap from Himself & Whomever is in the # 4 Spot???... REED:dunno:
Condit was incredibly active with strikes from the bottom. But it doesn't matter if you out-land the other guy 3-1, you ain't winning from the bottom like that.
it's unfortunate but it's true. It,s pretty much a given that as long as someone is on top, he'll win even if the other guy is far more active and does more damage. That's why I thought the fight was far closer than most had it. Don't get me wrong, GSP won it, but it was far from a 5-0 fight
I realize Hendricks CAN fall back on his wrestling but all too often guys fall in love with their striking when they get a few highlight KO's and tend to spend a whole fight head hunting.
One judge gave Condit a round, that's it, all the others had it a shut-out for GSP. I don't agree either, I think Condit did enough to win the third round even though he ended up on his back defending again, he did far more damage in that round. As for the others, its hard to give Condit any other rounds even though he wasn't completely dominated he wasn't in control either with GSP on top of him.
hendricks was a GREAT college wrestler, but his wrestling didn't transition well in the cage. he was outwrestled by koschek (who was just as good in college) and rick story (who wasnt even an all american in college). not sure who wins between hendricks vs. askren, but askren would outwork him if it went to the ground. he's very unorthodox and is also very good at bjj. that match 10 years ago doesn't mean shit. askren would've beaten him college too.
if GSP doesn't move backwards w/ his hands down, i think he'd beat the shit outta hendricks. it will be interesting to see though. hendricks is the most dangerous man in the octagon in the first round.
Far from a 5-0 fight? Well there is really only 1 round you could give to Condit, the round he knocked GSP down in. It was a 4 to 1 fight at best for Carlos.
i thought gsp won the third. he got kicked, fell, got hit a few times on bottom and then got a reversal to regain control and sustain more damage for the remainder of the round. condit's very good, but he was simply inferior in every aspect of the game.
