I would like to get some sort of gun that fires nickels and while that hideous idiot is in mid-bellow, put the barrel in his horse mouth and fire several rolls of nickels into his throat causing him to choke to death

Silver bells wouldn't be very metal. Carol of the bells however is. No divebombs though, I could go back and add some just for you though.

JA... The single most overrated band in the history of critically-acclaimed classic rock... Especially in terms of their playing... All manner of outrageous exaggerations of the playing of Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady are littered throughout the writings of numerous rock critics (none of whom ever seem to turn out to be actual musicians) which has given this band a quasi-legendary status. A listen to them live reveals a lot of very typical distorted blues noise and aimless, pocket-less noodling on bass. Grace Slick's faux-operatic contralto was lauded as spectacular and amazing, when the reality is that men liked her because she was pretty hot. Furthermore, the desire to not appear in any way sexist meant that she was overrated to a ridiculous degree. There was an alarming tendency for her and the high-tenor Marty Balin to wind up overlapping each other since they essentially sang in the same vocal range... Piss poor coordination between the two of them, though I tend to blame Grace Slick for that more than Marty Balin. Furthermore, their revolutionary pretensions, which should have been suspicious to more people at the time, are in hindsight absolutely laughable. Check out the lyrics to "We Can Be Together" sometime for a laugh at a rich, obnoxious rock star (Paul Kantner) having the gall to pretend to be representing the bloody troops on the ground in a rallying cry of "Up against the wall, motherfuckers!" ... disgusting... Such smug, self-importance can not be discredited enough. The departure of Kaukonen and Casady is portrayed as the beginning of the "decline" of the group, whereupon they were re-christened "Jefferson Starship" thanks to Kantner's deadly serious devotion to sci-fi concepts. Sure, this music was generally trash as well, but it was arguably more honest than the Marin County millionaire detached judgemental revolutionary horseshit that made them "legendary" ... There is a dearth of song quality in those "legendary" days that to me seems palpable when listening through their supposedly classic records... The music of the Grateful Dead has aged far better and the songs are miles better... on top of it, the group plays better, sounds better... If you want to hear some so-called psychedelic music from the era, they are a much better option, they had some shit music but they also had some fantastic music and songs... The Airplane begat the Jefferson Starship which finally devolved into simply "Starship" who made some of the worst music ever purposely released and promoted by a major record company... If you have heard the admittedly excellent track "White Rabbit", then you have heard everything you need to hear from this band's entire decades-long existence... Skip the rest, you WILL NOT be sorry

As for Supertramp... cute, clever, pretentious, English nonsense... If you can tolerate Roger Hodgson's voice and his precious lyrics, you have a lot more patience than I do... "Oh but listen to how well crafted the songs are!", says Dark Magus... yes, Magus, they are well-crafted, these fellows knew what they were doing... so does Billy Joel, and I don't have any time for his Marvin Hamlisch-as-rock star dreck either ... you can write the cleverest borrowed shit imaginable, but if your execution consists of a whimsical, mewling cutesy (Hodgson) or whiny suburbanite jewish showbizzer who never encountered something he couldn't rip-off and Cabaret the shit out of (Joel), your end product will be Swiss Cheese. I eagerly await Magus's raves of the less tuneful, gruff voiced Supertramp guy who plays a fairly mean piano and penned a silly song with a terrific Rhodes solo called "Bloody Well Right"

    Agree with your post.
See, you can do it when you put your mind to it, rather than say "Greg Lake is a fat wanker" or "Thick As A Brick is just a slice-of-actual-shit" - I like your posts like this.
Supertramp - I like their singles, but Ive got all their albums - I cant get into them at all. Their 'artiness' and 'cleverness' seemed to be a cross between Pink Floyd and 10cc - and it didn't work (for me, anyway). Their overall 'sound' is good and their 70s output was where its at - after that - they can all fuck off and die for all I care.

I do agree in a sense about JA, they are very hit and miss to me, but their good stuff is VERY good IMO. I also think Slick had a wonderful voice, of course she was also pretty hot, but her voice captivated me when I first heard it and i didnt know what she looked like so that didn't come into it for me.

Have to say I disagree entirely on Supertramp, they were fucking awesome. Also, McDogg, as a Syd fan, you know I love that whimsical English stuff . They crafted some amazing songs, and had a gift for melody.

By the way Irishman, you never got back to me on Lonnie Smith or Marc Moulin.

You shut your potato munching mouth.

    J/k

There's been a lot of remixes done of his work, the stuff with his group Placebo (not the gay 90s band) was excellent IMO.

You must like Lonnie Smith though, right? Or am I gonna have to put another Philwa on you?

cdogg - I'm sure you like The Grateful Dead?
I have phases when I dip into 'The Dead...well, when I say 'dip in' that usually means I'll buy 3 or 4 random multi-disc-boxset-volumes of 'Dick's Picks'.

They are hit and miss... some of their music is GREAT, some of it is TERRIBLE

Anything after about 1972, one should proceed with caution... Donna Jean Godchaux was a nearly unbearable presence in that band in the 70s...

Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, Europe '72 are all great... The 60s records are mostly excellent with a bad track or two here and there...

The later 70s with the Godchauxs are mostly unlistenable... The 80s with insufferable, keening queer Brent Mydland are worse... and in the 90s they were croaking their songs

It was that night when I got into a tussle after my constant barracking from the audience: "you fucking talentless black bastard!!! Chet Baker done fucked yo Moma in the ass and plays a mean trumpet better than you!!!"

The some random police-officer got involved, started throwing his weight around and mysteriously was never seen again not long after that...

At the moment listening to random selection....the self-titled fever ray album, really great and bleak/ominous, imagine it like a soundtrack to henry:protrait of a serial killer or maybe a michael haneke film

Also chemical brothers, dig your own hole, just a classic electronic album, each track (save the end) is dancefloor material.

cut copy - zonoscope...recommended, good pop

Brian Eno---another green world...always loved the artwork
    - recently saw the original painting its an extract from, plus the awesome title track was the title track from a bbc politi docu series whose name i forget, the album is generally great

Repo Man ...OST...fun film, great soundtrack
