I like a few of them, but the image of this band puts me off. I cannot stand dirty ass hippies.

eh, that's just a lot of their following... there was a time when there was a virtue to being a dirty-ass hippy... then, like so many things, it became a trendy thing adopted by kids with rich parents... I dig what you are saying, though, I hate that fucking scene and I hated it even in high school when I basically "looked" the part

This is tour when they used the 'Wall Of Sound' - probably the cleanest-sounding PA ever assembled.

not a whole lot, to be honest ... from the 17th century all the way up to the late 20th century, there's a ton of music I get... and then it just sort of stops

Don't get me wrong, "TV On The Radio" is a lot better than Maroon 5 or some shit like that, it isn't bad. BUT, I have no interest in listening to it just the same

There are things I could say about this but they'd all be vague and psuedo philosophic and wanky, like all my half cocked musings on music. but i think there's probably something to be said for the fact this generation's the first that's grown up with easy access to all the output of media that came before it. I think it's coming from a new place (which is by no means to say better). I'll leave it at that.

cdogg and I agree on a lot and we disagree on even more....but his post above, I'm down with 100%.

In fact, I'm culling tons of 'modern-shit' (it doesn't deserve the monicker of 'music') off my Ipod as I type...

I agree with Cdogg that in general modern music just isn't what it used to be as far as actual musical talent and song writing ability.

Modern music barely qualifies as music. It's fucking awful, and you just know it ain't gonna improve.

yeah, I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is a sound, a gloss, a uniform point of view about it all that makes me gag

selling out used to be something to be mocked

maybe I'm oversimplifying, but it seems to be largely the AIM now

Both cdogg's main points relate to what i was saying. I'm too tired to get into a deep and meaningful, but I get what he's saying.

i think music's basically where the humanities were 30-40 years ago. We've just been exposed to so many perspectives there seems no sane position left but total relativism. All truth is partial, there are no grand narratives to seek out, just fragments in a vast cultural buffet to be consumed/deconstructed & cleverly repackaged. It didn't make for for fertile intellectual ground 40 years ago and it doesn't make for allot of great music now but if you're tuned into it allot of it's really good/interesting on its own terms.

there's nothing even remotely near the mainstream, though, that I can even tolerate for 5 seconds... it's that awful

I never would have felt that way until the last 5-10 years... I have always been a music snob, but even then there was bound to be a song or two on the radio where I would say "you know, that's pretty good"

    I haven't said that in a decade

Yeah the charts is wall to wall horseshit. I loved MGMT, but off the top of my head that was pretty much it in the last 5 years. 'Fated to pretend'.....MGMT gets the predicament of modern musicians (/youth culture).

Neil Young had a shitty song in the late 80s called "This Note's For You" (i.e. "This Buds for you" in Budweiser ads) which was an assault on artists who might appear in commercials... "Ain't singing for Pepsi... Ain't singing for Coke... Ain't singing for nobody, makes me look like a joke"

Though the song was not particularly popular, it's message and the sarcastic music video that accompanied it were championed by a lot of famous musicians... It's hard to imagine that now

The Maroon 5 guy would take it up the ass for the opportunity to shill for Pepsi
