In terms of bands you could safely play at a random 50th birthday party The Beatles & Stones are probably it. And even then, only Lennon & Harisson's stuff in the formers case.

Are any of those bands highly regarded? For instance I doubt any of those bands have an album which clears 3.0 on rateyourmusic.

The Kinks have some shite stuff some great stuff, but yeah I'd say I'm a fan. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting and it depends what you wanna include. To return to rateyourmusic since I was just browsing it, just about every band I really like have albums that have scored over 4.0 and been top 10 releases in the year they came out. I just have a specific type of stuff i like.

One Size Fits All (more in the vein of 'Overnite Sensation', but a little more scatty and less humorous)
Bongo Fury (not quite as 'tight' as 'Roxy And Elsewhere' but Beefheart and his crappy vocals do their best to ruin it)
You Are What You Is (Essential. 20 songs, double album...almost like a Zappanthology - awesome band, catchy melodies, witty critique, funny lyrics...like FZ's 'White Album')
Them Or Us (bit more in the vein of the above, with some 'Ship Arriving To Late To Save A Drowning Witch' added. Steve Vai's great on this album)
The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life (bit too much filler so could have been a masterpiece)

To be honest, I neber delved much into Zappa's late 80s/early-mid 90s stuff so I can't comment.

same here... I've heard some of the pieces from "The Yellow Shark" and I liked it, but never really owned any of it

You Are What You Is was definitely good

Them Or Us is unlistenable to me, because of the production

Zappa should have gone the whole hog and been Weird Al Yakovich or whatever his name is.

I find him borderline juvenile. The 'humour' comes off passive aggressive to me, like a teenager.....I just find too much of it annoying. Very talented musician, obviously.

True. But the 'off the wall'/irreverent thing is usually going and usually feels a little off to me. It feels deliberate. It's not all bad....it just doesn't chime with me.

Plus way too many ghey ass guitar solos

The only band who can make regular use of solos and not be ghey is television. Still a mystery to me how they do it

the thing is though, a lot of it is influenced heavily by 20th century music, i.e. Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Varese, Ives... so it will sound off the wall because the experiments in "serious" music of the era were off the wall compared to more standard western methods... furthermore, he was aware that certain sounds are in and of themselves funny and he liked to toss these elements into his compositions

I have no use for a lot of his music, but some of it is brilliant, as are some of the solos you hate so much

Steely Dan solos are practically verses in and of themselves in songs

yeh music itself can sound funny...and totally match the feel of the song its a non-serious song
