Anyone who names their kids things like Dweezil or Moon Unit cannot be listened to.

If Steely Dan had snorted some powder instead of smoking weed I bet they'd have made music I really liked.

it's better to be brief usually, for one thing

outside of that, it depends on the tune

Mainly, I'm looking for melody, structure like a story (a clear start/crest/conclusion)... is anything being said on the instrument that can't be said with words?

Does it fit within the context of the piece of music, not just the structure but the arrangement, is the timbre appropriate?

Even a great jazz soloist will run out of things to say after a few minutes, which is why I never much dug the modal jazz scene... if John Coltrane eventually repeats himself, EVERYBODY does

I think Hut's problem is that he thinks Solo = Showing off... I think YOUR problem, Z is that you like the solos that are basically just showing off!

I would find it hard to believe they didn't snort powder

I don't like overly showy solos cDogg. I think showing some technical abilty is fine, as long as it actually fits the song and like you I think the solo should have a melody. I don't like the play as many notes as you can as fast as you can solos.

Can you post a solo that you like Cdogg? I'll try to find one to post as well.

Midway through... a brilliant "electric sitar" (a guitar with a special string-buzzing flat bridge to mimic a sitar sound) solo by the inimitable Denny Dias... melodic, soulful, memorable, funky... ridiculous... one of my faves... I do a shitty version of it myself

    Yeah, exactly.

History shows us that time after time, cocaine is what they get into after they've made great music, made tons of money and then turn into brain-dead twats who then make shit music to which anyone would think: "WTF hapened to them?" :scratcher:

what sucks about some guitar solos is that they try to be fast/technical/difficult to play and are long..rather than being interesting and fitting in with the song
    :dunno:

it's all reminiscent of 80's heavy metal shred-fests :pathetic:

The Great Curve has two fantastic solos. Basically because they sound like deconstructions of a guitar solo.

I doubt a single party has ever been ruined by cider. And nobody ever became a recluse because they liked cider too much. Or was committed to a mental hospital.
