What if Roid was as brave and as world traveled in his prime as he is now?

Watching Vinny Paz get beat up like that was one of the most enjoyable boxing experiences I ever had... I only wish he had been knocked down three more times

Again, it doesn't matter how good or not good DM was... what matters is he was the consensus second best guy... Jones beats him, it is BETTER for his legacy than not fighting him at all

That might have happened if the ref didn't stop it when he did...he had to all but sit on Paz after that last knockdown to keep him from getting up again.

agREED. As usual...you get right to the point of the discussion and examine it without a bias one way or the other. It's absolutely better for a fighter's resume to have beaten the other or next best fighter in the division, especially when that fighter has a title belt and a valid claim to being the legit champ in the division.

exactly... Only a madman would say Jones was scared of DM or that DM had any more than a hellbound snowball's chance, but conversely, only a madman would say it doesn't matter to your legacy to never fight your only even semi-real rival to the throne

Vicente Rondon was a pretender to Bob Foster's throne and that made Bob Foster furious... When he got the chance, he went for it and he absolutely KILLED Rondon... Had Foster just ignored it and let Rondon alone with the WBA belt, it would have hurt his legacy

He wasnt the same fighter before it tho.

It definitely took something out of him physically and mentally... he absorbed a quiet, but vicious beating even while winning the fight

Yep. Foster destroyed Rondon so completely that he is now considered a bum by many who don't know much/anything about him. But he was actually a pretty good fighter with some quality wins, and his fight with Foster wasn't thought to be a mismatch, even thought Foster was the favorite, but Foster made it one.

That's a Faaaaaaaar Cry from Being "Shot" Though....Taylor Moved Up to Welter & Won/Defended it Against Some Pretty Decent Guys...A "Shot" Fighter Doesn't Do That...

Yep. Anyone who describes Taylor as "shot" immediately after the first Chavez fight needs to reassess their definition of "shot". It's very probable that the punishment he absorbed in that fight (in addition to his aggressive style and being involved in many brutal Philly gym sparring sessions) contributed to his early fade as an elite fighter, but he was still a world class fighter immediately following the Chavez fight which was evidenced by his initial success at Welter. Taylor always seemed to be a fighter destined for a short time at the top and the Chavez fight probably helped that come about.

The fight definitely shortened his boxing career.

My stance has always been that Roy was a bigger world-wide star than anyone he supposedly ducked or avoided. They should have come to him.

    For me it's that simple.

You are probably right, but again, that wasnt the point of this thread.

I can think of more than one scenario in which RJJ's legacy could've suffered from facing DM.

For one, he loses to DM. That may be a remote possibility in most people's minds, but it doesn't take a mad man to believe it.

The second, more likely scenario in which RJJ's legacy suffers, has RJJ winning but in much less impressive fashion than in his performances against R. Johnson or Hill, for example - the kinds of wins that earned him his reputation as invincible but that would be put in new perspective in the event he struggled even a little against DM.

Me neither. Cdogg is usually pretty accurate with his takes but picking Brannon in 5 over Jones was a clear case of nuthugging

I'd like to have seen Roy in 15 rounders with 6 weeks between fights, with his diet composed mainly of bully beef and eggs.

Most of you can't read or can't be bothered to. LIKE I WAS SAYING....This thread was simply asking if ROID JONES JUNIOR fought every fighter that was there for him to fight. Every fight that was proposed but he chose not to for whatever reason. THE REASONS DON'T FUCKING MATTER take your childish bickering about your idols and shove it up your asses! If he fought all those people would he come out unscratched undefeated and remembered as the greatest fighter that ever lived OR would he have lost a bunch of times and diminished his legacy OR would he have lost some fights won some fights and was remembered as a great fighter who fought all comers. IT'S THIS FUCKING SIMPLE. IF YOU STILL STILL ...STILL! don't get it I will personally go to windows fucking paint and paint you a mother fucking picture...

Rereading my post, it comes much harsher than I intended it to be. Jones is a great fighter, one of the best of his generation. I just felt he could have been even more. Comparing him to Floyd is not necesseraly an insult as Floyd is great himself. It just acknowledge that both liked to cherrypick.

As Mike mentionned, Jirov and Gomez were quite a bit bigger than him so it's not fair to punish him for not fighting them ( and quite frankly, avoiding a fight with Jirov ). Same for the hw. But on the other hand, not pushing for the DM fight was unexcusable, so was not making the Hopkins rematch ( basically because of ego ). It was iffy that he complained about Tarver not being a deservin number 1 contender yet not caring when it was the Glen Kelly's of the world.

The other fights I mentionned would have helped his legacy too had they happened, assuming he doesn't lose more than one
