Boxing could have been late to the PED party, I don't know. I just know the stuff was around, legal and available.

the adverse effects of it, increased heart rate, stuffy nose that would hinder your breathing, sweating, etc. outweigh the lone positive of feeling a little less pain and the outrageous confidence... it hinders too much physically to be worth it in a boxing match

you'd need a Dilaudid drip to kill the pain involved with getting punched by a professional prizefighter... and that wouldn't help you much either, because you'd be laying on the canvas, sleeping peacefully

I'm not sure how much it would help, but people used it and other drug in an attempt to gain an advantage. That's all I'm saying.

I just find it odd that in a sport where stories about its chicanery have been around as long as the sport itself, nobody has a steroid story until recently... We know about fixed fights, the mob, Ray Arcel getting hit with a pipe, Jake LaMotta beating up his wives, Ali sleeping around, dirty everywhere... yet they managed to keep steroid use quiet? I don't buy it. Boxing was late to the game on steroids, just like it was late on plenty of legitimate training developments

during a fight, though? No evidence of that that I have ever heard

There have been guys like Whitaker, who had coke habits and there was still some in their system when they got tested, but I doubt Whitaker was saying "yeah, let me blow some lines here before the fight"

It's like the Pryor thing... people say "oh, it was in the bottle"... of course, that's retarded because he would have gotten none of the "benefits", it would have made him feel sick to his stomach if anything... I find it a lot more believable that some sort of breathing aid for asthma was mixed in to that water bottle. Cocaine? I don't buy that, it wouldn't have helped him, it would have made him feel sick to his stomach

Rocky 4 came out in 1985.

There was a general thought back then, however, that steroids made people bulky and therefore wouldn't help in sports like boxing and baseball.
While there may be a tick of substance to that, PEDs have developed to the point that everything that is important in boxing can be improved with them. Everything.

I know what you're saying, I just never meant for this to turn into a debate about the performance enhancing effects of coke. It was just one thing in a post that Cdogg felt like nitpicking. I also mentioned Amphetamines, but nobody nitpicked that one.

The recent documentary on the Billy Collins - Luis Resto fight showed Resto admitting that Panama Lewis put asthma medication in those bottles. For what it's worth.

Athletes should not do drugs. But boxing has always been corrupt to its core. Sanctioning bodies look the other way in many instances.

The steroid-esque storyline had a lot less to do with boxing than it had to do with American suspicions about Soviet (and all associated Bloc countries) athletes... this was a common theme during the Olympics of the era, as well... the idea of the female East German swimmer with a blacksmith's shoulders and a deep voice, etc.

If the antagonist is not "Ivan Drago" and is some guy from, say, England... well, the story would have been markedly different and likely had nothing to do with steroids

The rest of your post I agree with. It's pretty clear the right substances can make a huge, beneficial difference

IFBB pros weren't even using widely until the mid-late 1960s, and the compounds they had back then were very basic & primitive compared to what is available now (mostly orally administered). I'd surmise boxing was probably clean up until the 80s, and I don't think usage in the sport became widespread until later than that even.

Folks, I asked Mike Rossman about Steroids and he told me he'd never heard of them. He thought I was talking about Hemorrhoids, folks.

There were metabolites of it in Ray Leonard's post-fight urine sample against Hagler. Who knows?

I do wonder if it would be possible for a boxer to use cocaine to his benefit. I tried it once when I was in my early 20s---it gave me what felt like unbelievable energy, but then again it is mind-altering, so who knows how much of that was me tripping on something I tried for the first time. I could see someone losing a lot of weight while using it. It makes you feel invulnerable, but who knows? Well, I guess someone who used it more than ONCE, but it is a stimulant of sorts.

It also makes you stuffed up... this is a very, very bad thing if you are boxing

It also increases heart rate, not good over the course of a boxing match

You would have to take it before the fight. You'd get only adverse effects from drinking it during a fight.

Would it improve confidence? I think it would.
    Strength? Dunno.
Speed? I wonder about that. As a stimulant, it definitely would have you hyped up.
    Concentration? Doubt it.
    Endurance?????

Yeah, I knew a few guys who got hooked back in K-town. One guy, it just RUINED his nose over time---you could see it was shrunken and misshapen.

Maybe a tiny bump before a fight. Still doubt it though.

Either way, no one does coke like that.
