Just watched the first episode. It was actually pretty cool. Rhonda's story about her dad made me tear up like a little girl.

And Liz Carmouche is a lesbian. Good. It's absolutely unhittable.

Rousey has the unusual combination of being extremely real and extremely charismatic at the same time.
I think those characteristics are usually contrary to each other, at least when it comes to celebrities/pseudo celebrities.

Man, something tells me Rousey is going to be one of the most popular athletes in the world if she rips through Liz Carmouche. The amount of press she is getting right now is unprecedented and she hasn't even fought on the big stage before.

All of a sudden the UFC's strategy of having her headline this card makes perfect sense. Now let's see if she drives PPV numbers.

Roussey is not known at all outside of the US

 

I hate to argue, but I'm pretty sure she was known outside the US before she ever started fighting MMA. You don't medal in the World Championships and Olympics and remain unknown. So to say she's not known at ALL is just silly. Real silly.

In fact, prior to MMA, Rousey was more well-known OUTSIDE the US because Judo is a little watched sport by Americans.

That being said, do a search sometime and check how many foreign papers and news websites have articles about Rousey. And as I said, she is getting more press coverage right now than any fighter in the sport.

She has a real opportunity to grow women's MMA in leaps and bounds. She's already helped do it for Judo in the US.

 

Yeah, that's the fear. If she loses, it's a freaking mega leap backwards for women's MMA. Part of her vast appeal is that Mike Tyson-like aura of invincibility.

I can't argue that it's crazy Lyoto & Hendo would take a backseat to a female fighter, but I can't forget the amount of pub Gina Carano got. You have to ride that train & if Rousey is eye-catching as a "fighter" along with the rest of the package, Dana White is a fucking genius.

Think about it...how many "Mega Fights" are really left in the UFC? No fault of Dana's for pitting the best against the best, time & time again. But in the interim, when you can't pull off the GSP-Silva or Silva-Jones fights, you need filler shit to give the sport the lift it needs in the absence of the Mega Fight. The hardcore fan will eat up every event regardless, but that's not how you grow your brand substantially over the long haul.

 

Sure, there's plenty for the avid fan. What I'm saying is that without the clear mega-fight imminent, why not use a potential gimmick that could spin the turnstiles in the absence of said "big fight"?

I just think Dana is the modern-day, fuckin' jacked up P.T. Barnum in that he is always thinking ahead. Use a broad to float your product while nothing else is going on. Sadly, not enough people are psyched enough for Hendo-Machida to actually pay for it.

 

That's a good point. People are bitching that this fight isn't the main event, but if it were the main event, people would be bitching that's it's a terrible main event.
