Wlad klitschko style deconstructed

Wlad is a textbook heavyweight. He does everything correctly by the book.

Main features.

Jab. The jab is an offensive and defensive weapon. It also get him the right range at all times and busts up his opponents. Very important punch for wlad he has gone several rounds just throwing jabs and usually throw 20 in a row

Right hand. The right hand keeps opponents honest. Very powerful right hand.

Footwork. He moves back from punches to defend himself.


Can anyone help me really deconstruct his style and see what he does that makes him so effective

 

Heavyweight division being CRAP makes him effective

 

He threatens with the lead hand pretty much constantly; keeps it far out and changes level with it allot so his opponent doesn't know if the next one will be a chamber-jab or an up-jab or whatever. Against southpaws he almost always keeps the lead high and tries to bat down his opponents jab and come over it (Hopkins does the same). He's pretty good at putting his lead hand over his guys left shoulder and moving to his right if hegets rushed.....almost any time a guy guys inside his out held left he either clinches or tries to spin them like that. The lefts out there to gauge range for defense

 

This is also a smart wald pussy tactic.

Wlad also extends his left arm as he takes a step back sometimes, to defend right hands. This is effective but you have to combine the extension of the arm with moving back because if you don't Lewis vs Rahman 2 KO happens.

Essentially it's the Kronk style. The jab being the main offensive weapon. As such there needs to be authority and snap on the jab. The opponent has to respect the jab (Hearns/Lewis). The big right hand needs to have KO power. Because some guys can get past jabs with head movement and upper body movement and get inside (Holyfield, Tyson, at a lower level Chisora) so they have to respect the right hand and understand that they will get very hurt if they come in without showing any respect. I think this is what Forrest was trying to do to Mayorga by loading up with right hands early because Mayorga had no respect for the jab or right hand. The problem was that his power wasn't enough and Mayorga was able to come forward without worrying about the right hand (in the first fight) due to his excellent chin a that stage of his career. If you listen to the post fight interview with Forrest he says that sometimes you have to make guys repect you and go to war to get that respect. I think he meant the right hand.

At a lower level look at Lee vs Chavez Jr. Lee simply didn't have the power in his punches to keep Chavez off. Lee caught him with several big left hands, Chavez walked through them.

So the big right hand is a huge part of the kronk style.

The defensive movements to get away from shots is a big part of the success of the style too. When Wlad takes that step back he is in a perfect countering position, and the opponent understands the danger of not respecting the right hand.

The left hook is another weapon he uses to come around the side of the right hand. Changing up the jab/left hook lead is effective.

And finally tying up the opponent on the inside is crucial. Without this, the kronk fighter was always in danger.

The reason I ask is because Wlad seems to have a very basic style. He NEVER throws body shots and only ever really throws a jab, left hook and right hand. He rarely puts the 3 together, probably due to risk of being countered. It's all jab jab jab jab x 20, right hand. etc.

Very effective but boring to watch I suppose. Still, he makes 20 million per fight..

I don't think there is very much more to it, just that he does his thing exceptionally well.

His jab is probably the best ever at heavyweight, when you consider range, quickness, accuracy and power all together (Holmes is very close). His jab makes it more difficult to attack against him than jabbing in general and he can seriously hurt his opponent with his jab unlike most.

Also, his combination of reach&quickness is splendid, which allows him to beat his opponent to a punch in every fight (apart from Sanders). Thus he can use distance to his advantage and force his opponent out of his game plan. Anyone who wants to beat him has to take risks and attack, which exposes them to the right hand, which is among the best 3 ever.

Also the quickness and jab means that Wlad can keep his right glove glued to this temple which is how he protects his somewhat fragile chin.

Also he is able to avoid inside fighting, mainly because he is big and strong enough to clinch, his body can take abuse and because of his reflexes he is able to react to the opponents attacks (and lean on him). Since nobody has been able to beat him from outside for ten years and since he is able to avoid all inside fighting (in a style most don't like), he is effective indeed

I wonder if it will ever thrive again? No athletes are interested in boxing. They'll try every other sport and then as a last resort might give boxing a shot. There are no more born and bred boxers. You'll get mostly a bunch of Michael Grant type athletes who see the stuff on tv and then try it out.

An indictment of shitty modern refereeing, imo. Or - probably more to the point based on the fact Joseph Cooper hasnt reffed a major fight since Khan-Peterson - the system which selects for referees

 

I don't know if refereeing has changed all that much (Ali was allowed to clinch constantly in his late years,, even Sugar Ray Robinson held on plenty). It might be just that few fighters have used it as much as Wlad or been able to do it as effectively. I wouldn't mind if refs took a more strict line to it though, since obviously a good clinching technique gives a fighter an (unfair) advantage

 

If so, officiating's certainly failed to adapt to the change in tactics and it needs to because in-fighting's close to going extinct. Escapology must die!
