Best traditionally animated film?

So anything drawn or using traditional animation techniques such as stop motion, no computer animated/Pixar stuff...what is the best film?

 

You're right I guess, as it did make use of stop motion, and was done REALLY well. Never thought of that actually, as the animation sequences aren't throughout the whole film, but that's a good choice.

 

What about fully animated films?

 

Lion King

 

Yeah Lion King was a great film, and yes I know it ripped off Kimba the White Lion but it is still an awesome movie, one of my favourites. I'm glad Disney changed their minds on ditching traditional animation but I still hate the look of most of their films after The Lion King. You compare the new stuff to The Jungle Book, for example, and to me it just pales in comparison.

 

Aladdin is awesome.

Yeah Aladdin was excellent. That whole renaissance period for Disney produced some wonderful films, and were also nice visually.

Anyone a fan of Studio Ghibli? Aardman?

Stop Motion - Nightmare Before Christmas

Traditional Animation - Pinocchio (there's some dark hellscape shit goin' on in that movie)

Asian animation - "Akira", "Princess Mononoke"

Yup, me to. Had a bit of live action in there to, but I thought it was fantastic.

 

Nick Park and Aardman are brilliant animators, technically outstanding, but their visual style doesn't really do it for me. I'm surprised they weren't mentioned before.

Hate Tim Burton but Nightmare Before Christmas was fantastic. I love Akira as well. Nobes, are you a fan of Studio Ghibli? My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away etc?

And great call on Watership Down, Hut. Really dark.

Henry Selick must get annoyed, always having Tim Burton get credit for his movies. ::

As far as Studio Ghibli, that name never really registered with me for some reason. I always just called them Miyazaki movies. I exposed my daughter to a couple of his movies when she was very young (Mononoke, Spirited Away). Now she's an aspiring animator and she loves all his movies, so I've been exposed to quite a few more in that style since.

 

He didn't direct it though. Selick has proven with "James and the Giant Peach" and "Coraline", that what he did on "Nightmare Before Christmas" wasn't some sort of fluke attributed to the vision of Tim Burton. He's certainly not as prolific as Burton, but if you compare their animated works, he's certainly a much more skilled director then Burton is.

He's not exactly Tobe Hooper to Steven Spielberg on the set of "Poltergeist".

 

It was a combination, just like any great animated film. Problem I have is, because Burton has the bigger name, it's called a Tim Burton movie by a majority of people, like Selick was some sort of an afterthought on the project. He was the goddamn director, and the animation IS fantastic, BTW.

Jurassic Park was written by Michael Crichton and produced by Kathleen Kennedy. It's not known as that Crichton/Kennedy film about dinosaurs in the modern world. It's known as that Spielberg movie, that was cool as shit when it came out, because we hadn't seen anything remotely like it before.

 

Yeah, I know. Without Burton involved the movie doesn't get made. Selick probably doesn't mind being 2nd banana himself, it's just a weird dynamic I noticed.

I'll bet if you asked a lot of people who saw "James and the Giant Peach" and "Coraline", they'd throw out Burton's name, and he had nothing to do with either.

It looks very primitive now, but as a child I totally loved Rankin Bass "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". I never got tired of watching that every Christmas.


As far as traditional animation goes, The Lion King reigns supreme. The Iron Giant deserves more recognition and to be discovered by today's kids. I also like the work of Ralph Bakshi like 'Wizards" and "Fire & Ice". There are too many Anime films I like, but "My Neighbor Totoro", "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Spirited Away" are at the top. And if you guys have not watched the magnificent The Secret of Kells find it and watch it immediately.
