If that is what he was saying he would be right. But that isnt what he is saying. He is saying that Hendricks is a better wrestler. That is clearly not true.
MMA isn't wrestling so it wouldn't matter if he was. GSP will be taking him down, especially if he comes at him all crazy like he did with Condit.
MMA isnt an Art. It's a combination of arts. and wrestling is a huge part of it. And despite what accomplishments Hendricks had in Wrestling, GSP is better. For example. If you currently took both of them out of MMA and put them on a college or Olympic wrestling mat, GSP would beat him. Because GSP is a better wrestler.
No fucking way Hendricks loses to GSP in a genuine wrestling match. I suspect that Hendricks' wrestling is superior to GSP in the cage if he wants it to be, but Hendricks looks for the KO, not the takedown, usually. If GSP and Hendricks start wrestling when they fight, Hendricks will look and seem the better wrestler. Since they are going to fight, it isn't worth discussing too much more than that. If you disagree, fine. Get it on the record now.
I dig Anthony but there is zero basis for his statement. He's pretending college wrestling and MMA wrestling are the same game.
Not at all. I am basing this opinion on wrestling positions he has been in against high class wrestlers and proved superior. I base it off his performance against Otto Olson in 2005, in which he basically dominated one of the best wrestlers in the world. in 2005, can you imagine now? <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5Ye0cI1LHBY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Nah... UFC HEAVILY Promotes GSP on the Strength of Being the "Best Welterweight Ever", they Sell Anderson Silva on the Basis of Being Not Only THE Best Best Middleweight (& Fighter in the World, Lb for Lb), But Also Possibly THE Best Fighter EVER, PERIOD...BOTH Guys are Basically Viewed as UNTOUCHABLE @ Their Particular Weight Classes & HAVE Been for Quite Some Time Now... For the Last 2-3 Years (MINIMUM) UFC has Dangled & Insinuated GSP vs Silva PUBLICLY...For the Last Year or 2, they've Dangled & Insinuated Silva vs. Bones Jones PUBLICLY.... Dana White CERTAINLY Wants those Fights... Though Short, MMA Already has a List of ANTICIPATED Fights that DIDN'T/WON'T Come to Fruition...That's Undeniable... REED:hammert:
REED Actually AGREES Somewhat, Although Sonnen's Ability to WILLFULLY Take Silva to the Ground Shines a BEAM of Hope Upon GSP's Chances... REED's Only Arguing from the Perspective of the Fight Being Not Only ANTICIPATED by Mainstream Fans, but HYPED by UFC Brass.... Silva Thrashing GSP DOESN'T Hurt GSP's Stock Whatsoever...& if GSP Shocked the World & Sooooo Happened to WIN, We'd Then Hear about Silva's AGE...It's a WIN-WIN Scenario for UFC, so Quite Naturally they Speak of GSP-Silva, Frequently... REED:kidcool:
wrestling in the cage is a lot different than on the mat. you can't crouch down like one would on the mat because you have to keep a straight stance to defend yourself from getting knee'd or punched. GSP's wrestling is awesome because of the timing of his takedowns and his ability to dominate from the top. also, takedown defense is a lot different when you can defend against the cage and some guys are just great at penetrating through the legs when their opponent is stuck against the cage. i think that's why fitch was so effective w/ his takedowns. he knew the science of getting them closer to the cage and keep them there after he took them down. he was a division 1 wrestler himself, but never won anything significant. GSP's wrestling is simply on another level. unless he gets coldcocked in the first round, he should handle hendricks with ease. i'm more curious to see how he'd fare against maia.
in a submission grappling match, i'd pick GSP w/ ease. in freestyle wrestling, i'd also pick GSP based on what i've read about many experts saying that he's good enough to win the canadian olympic trials. i guess the only advantage hendricks might have is in NCAA rules.
Well you know i have gotten shit for this. I actually think GSP can beat Silva. BUT i dont think GSP believes it. And for that, GSP is not willing to risk it. At least not yet. GSP said something recently that if he moved up in weight he will never go back to 170. So maybe he is just making sure he is done at this weight.
I think he'd have a good shot too Anthony. Only problem is GSP uses striking to set up the TD and with Silva's range and accuracy I don't know how he would get close enough. It's an interesting fight for sure.
Yeah that's true. GSP would have to instantly try for that take down. It all depends on how GSP handles the extra weight.
I used to think GSP had a chance, now I think he has no chance whatsoever. He's just too small. His frame is maximised already, at 185 he'd be less explosive. I just don't think he has the size or chin to beat Silva. Silva is a big guy, and Sonnen is a fucking big guy too. GSP wouldn't be able to take the shots Sonnen can afford to, plus he doesn't have the brute strength of Sonnen to grind Silva to the mat.
:: Not at all. GSP's frame is maximised for his weight class, he is simply not big enough to compete at 185. A guy like Condit has a plenty big enough frame to pack on a few pounds without much effect, GSP doesn't.
Silva isn't at his best anymore and GSP's mma wrestling is, imo, superior to Sonnen's. GSP would have a good chance, but like Anthony said, it doesn't seem like he thinks so. Reed is correct, it's a huge fight that the fans and pretty big fans have been seeking for a long time now.
Dude, Sonnen is a huge middleweight and GSP would be comparatively tiny. I wouldn't let Sonnen's takedown success against Silva determine GSP's chances despite his superior skill.
