Let's see how Fury does against a hardened gladiator like Lyle. Lyle was an animal, and his fight to the death with Shavers was one of the most brutal fights I've ever seen in any division. Fury is bigger than Lyle, but bigger does not necessarily mean stronger or harder hitting. Both guys like a fight so IMO they'd most likely meet at ring center and let fly with their best stuff, though Lyle could box well when he wanted to.
Just two days ago I watched Lyle defeating Joe Bugner via split decision. It was a solid heavyweight scrap, but not much different from a fight between two solid (not exceptional) contenders. I It must be noted that Lyle in his time was known mostly as a big banger but many of his KO victims would also be rather small men by today's standards. Thus, even though Lyle did look impressive, it is uncertain if his punches had the same effect now. Also Lyle clearly had the more traditional technique compared to Fury, but if that decided fights, Fury should have lost to Chisora and Johnson too. All that being said I'd still pick Lyle. Fury makes too many mistakes with his defense and even though he would definitely be more alert against Lyle than he was against USS, chances are that Lyle catches him enough. But after Fury gets a year or two of experience, tides could turn here
It's really difficult to give Fury a chance at any top heavy when he was hurt and dropped by a guy like Cunningham. Any fighter has room for improvement but he's not 14 years old. Fury is not as inept as Valuev, but he also doesn't have that caveman cranium absorbing punches.
True, but it must be noted that these days heavyweights tend to peak over their thirties, especially the tall guys. Even Lennox developed plenty after his first pro fights and Fury is even bigger guy than him without the same amateur experience. Of course, Fury will never be nearly as good as Lennox but he could still become clearly better than he is now
Ron Lyle could actually box and cared about being in shape and genuinely wanted to win... this would make him the best opponent ever faced by Tyson Furry by a considerable distance
Whilst I agree in principle, I'd say that Cunningham can box a bit, was pretty much ripped last night and certainly came to win. He's a cruiserweight, though. MTF
Lyle would be better than anything Furry has beaten for sure, but Cunningham doesn't really fit into the usual modern heavyweight mould in that he isn't a massive fat sloth with zero ability. He actually a decent fighter, a two time belt-holder in fact who came to fight, was in good shape and last time before this gave Adamek (a generally well regarded sort) a very tough fight. That's all I am saying. MTF
