It used to be we had the Oscar Sweepstakes, Tthen the Floyd Sweepstakes, and the Manny Sweepstakes, now the Klitschko Sweepstakes.

Take the Earnie Shavers example in the other "80's Thread".

Earnie had some big losses and some big wins. Same with Hearns. Same with Duran. Its because they were fighting lots of different guys and eventually they ran into the wrong guy on the wrong night.

Guys like Haye, Vitali, Wlad, Fury, Price, Adamek, Arreola etc could ALL come out of this era with a LOT of credit if they made the fights. Adamek has tried it to a degree and will be well remembered for it, in addition to making a lot of money.

The above guys could all have 3 or 4 losses to other names on that list and be well regarded nonetheless but they won't make the fights.

Instead...get in the queue for a payday, spring a toe, make excuses...fuck off home.

We all want that. It's easier to masquerade as an elite fighter when the talent pool is shallow. Easier to cherry pick when there aren't many elite threats.

 

Exactly... The NHL has never had a deeper talent pool... There have never been this many world-class players in the league at the same time and they come from all over the place

Boxing CAN improve if/when some of these burgeoning boxing nations mature and produce more and more quality pros but the fact of the matter is that right now we are in a bit of a doldrums because that hasn't happened enough YET to fill in the gap left by a huge decline of the sport in what has been traditionally its largest supplier of world-class fighters... This seems painfully obvious to me and it has fuck all to do with jingoism... I'm not a rah-rah America type of guy by any stretch, I don't care about America's standing in the world of international sport.

The lighter weight classes are still hot because the US only occasionally contributed top fighters to those spots... the big producers were places like Mexico, Puerto Rico, Thailand, the Phillipines, the odd Cuban expat here and there, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, Nicaragua... those places haven't ceased producing excellent professionals so you still have a high quality of fights and fighters just as much as you ever did... it just isn't that way in the bigger weight classes which until as recently as 10-15 years ago were stacked with Americans. I think there is a great deal of denial regarding A) How sharp the decline here has been and B) The impact of that decline on the game as a whole

Almost every non-American championship-caliber fighter in the heavyweight division since its inauguration has come from Eastern Europe or Germany, or via Germany, or the old Soviet Union- with a few notable exceptions. When you consider the fact that those those countries did not actively participate in professional sports from around 1940 to 1990 then it does make me wonder how they can be regarded as "Producing" fighters.
