4 belts that kinda matter. Interim, diamond etc I ignore. Once a fighter has become a world champion there is no real incentive to keep the belt but the ability to say 'Im a world champion' still means something. The euro belt is a good stepping for fighters over here. When a guy captures a euro belt the next step is to challenge at world level. For that reason the Euro belt holds some meaning. We have too many belts, one thing i enjoy about the UFC is that guys must defend and equally work towards the title.
One thing I left out about how fucking stupid the WBA's belt stuff is, is how their 'interim' status works. I like Interim champs and I believe they have a proper purpose in the sport. But the WBA bastardizes the meaning of 'interim' because of their 'super' and 'regular' champ ambiguities. For example: from fightnews: [h=1]Quigg-Salinas for WBA regular title?[/h]By Gabriel F. Cordero A source has informed Fightnews.com about the possibility that the Cuban Yoandris Salinas and WBA interim super bantamweight world champion Scott Quigg could meet for the vacant WBA super bantamweight “regular” world title. The source indicates that the “regular” super bantamweight championship was declared vacant after world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux beat Nonito Donaire to become “unified” world champion. According to information promoters must come to an agreement before June 14 or the WBA will call a purse bid. This stuff is just pathetic. For those of you who think 4 belts is too many, lobby against the WBA. They are the weakest.
To Fuuuuurther Illustrate Just How MEANINGLESS Belts are Today, Lamont Peterson REMAINS the IBF Jr. Welterweight Champion Despite Being DESTROYED by Lucas Matttttthhhhyyyyyssssssse, the WBC INTERIM Jr. Welter Champ.... REED:wack:
This doesn't demonstrate the MEANINGLESS of the belts. That you have a problem with what happened in this situation is a separate and distinct issue.
matthysse didnt want petersons title. that would mean he relinquishes his spot as garcia's mandatory.
Didn't the WBC start the diamond belt thing with Pacquiao? Anyway, I used to know all of the beltholders. Now I doubt I could name more than half a dozen accurately. I don;t really care,to be honest; like some others, I just want to watch good fights between the best fighters. MTF
The WBA are generally who I have in mind when I think of this sort of nonsense. Then the WBC. Not sure if the other two are particularly involved in it - they might be but as I said, I rather gave up trying to care when Diamond champs started to appear out of the ether. What is daft is that the two oldest and arguably more respected of the 'big four' are the two who seem especially embroiled in this nonsense. MTF
To Any SENSIBLE, Non-Sanctioning Body ADVOCATE, it's MEANINGLESS... Peterson just Got SHIT KICKED for the Woooooorld to See, by Another Beltholder...The Idea of Peterson STILL Being Called a "World Champion" is COMICAL....As if the Idea of Having 4+ Boxing Champions PER Weight Class Wasn't SILLY Enough...NATHAN Against Peterson PERSONALLY, but he Simply DOESN'T DESERVE the Privilege of Being Referred to as a "World Champion".... REED:shadow:
the fact that in each division four different guys can conceivably refer to themselves as "THE champion of the world" is preposterous There was a time when there being TWO guys like that was the object of much ridicule (60s and 70s)
I haven't watched the fight yet. But, assuming Neil is correct, the explanation is simple...Peterson's belt wasn't on the line. Confirmed by boxrec: Fought at 141 lbs., so no titles at stake although the WBC would have stripped Matthysse off his interim title would he have lost the fight. So, gee, it was a non-title bout. The bitching is wrongly focused.
Just MORE Sanctioning Body BULLSHIT... The Fight was SOLD as "Champion vs. Champion", as a Way of Getting CLOSER to Fighting Out just WHO the Best 140lb'der in the Woooooorld is....Whether his Belt was OFFICIALLY @ Stake or Not, EVERYBODY KNEW Peterson was a 'World Champion'...EVERYBODY Also Saw Peterson Get DESTROYED... To Lend ANY Credence to Peterson's Claim as a 'World Champion", Post-Matttthhhhhyyyyyyssssse is a JOKE.... REED:boohoo:
Yep... 1 World, 1 World Champion... The 2 Belt Days Seem like a GOLDEN AGE, Compared to the Madness we See Today...Dudes w/BARELY 20 Fights Carrying 2-3 Belts to the Ring w/Them.... Fuck That.... REED:shadow:
If only there was a way that the outlets that televise boxing (HBO, Showtime, PPV companies, etc) could band together and form their own championships, then refuse to even recognize the Alphabet Soup titles, that would be great. I know it's a pipe dream and there are countless reasons why it won't happen, but the sooner the existing sanctioning bodies disappear, the better off the sport will be. TFK
HBO commentators have been going in that direction. Often when they mention a guy has a title they just leave it at that. No mention of which laughstock of an organization it is.
It is a pipedream with countless reasons why it won't happen, but the conclusion is incorrect even if it did happen. There are too many fighters who would get screwed out of title shots if this occurred. Some of the screwing would be nefarious, some wouldn't, but there would be a lot of it. When you put the fans ahead of the fighters, you are looking for a bullshit outcomes that you will certainly find.
The way to fix the possibility of deserving fighters being frozen out is to dilute the value of the thing they are being frozen out of fighting for in the first place? Seems pretty ridiculous
Reminds REED of the WUSSification of Youth Sports Culture.... Some Leagues Play Games WITHOUT Keeping Score &/or Give EVERY Team Trophies @ the End of the Season...It DILUTES the Idea of EXCELLENCE or COMPETITION, in Some Cases... Ridiculous.... REED:mj:
Yeah. Lobster is a treat. If I had lobster every weekend, I wouldn't appreciate it as much as I do when I eat it two or three times a year.
Yep. So the solution is "everybody gets to be a champion". Yay! The devaluation is only going to continue. The fighters and the big broadcasters like HBO have more power than these jokes of organizations. The belts are like currency. They only have value if people recognize them. I can print out my own "money" and go to the store. Do you think the cashier will accept it? Technically they could, however it doesn't matter if the currency they took in has no value anywhere else. It's not even casual fans anymore, but hard core ones can't name most of the "champions" in any one division. The reason is simple, very few care.
