I remeber the time when Floyd was fighting in front of half empty arena while cashing HBO check wich were far above his market value, kind of like Ward is doing right now. No one would have believed you if you told him he would go on to be the biggest supertar in boxing and the most paid fighter ever.

Yeah, you're true. But remember the whole 'slave contract' debacle and the boxing press all furrowing their brow that he was wasting natural star appeal.....we'd have been surprised in 2002-03 that he made it as Mr. big bollocks but in 98-99 we wouldn't have been too shocked. We'd have felt like he had it in him. Ward not so much....I agree somebody else will come along tho

Floyd Mayweather was fighter of the year in 1999 and by about 2002, he would have been in any sensible person's list of greatest Junior Lightweights ever

I thought the discussion was about great fighters, not great draws

REED Found the Kessler and Dawson Fights to Be Entertaining...Not in Terms of 2-Way Action, Obviously, but Ward Threw ALOT of Leather in Those Bouts & was Decisive AND Impressive...

Floyd needed DLH to enter into mainstream consciousness and the big money league though. Without Oscar, Floyd wouldn't be earning what he is currently.

w/Out Question, the Dela Fight PROPELLED Floyd to Where he is Today...

"However", it's IMPOSSIBLE to Say w/Certainty that Floyd "Wouldn't Be" Earning what he Currently is, w/Out the Dela Fight...If that Bout DOESN'T Happen, Maybe Floyd's FORCED Into Taking Some of the More Challenging Bouts he's Been Accused of Ducking, Over the Years...& Maybe, By Virtue of Taking Tough Fight After Tough Fight, Floyd Eventually BUILDS Himself Into a Mainstream PPV Attraction???...

The fact that Floyd is doing what he is doing is proof enough that boxing is not in rude good health.

Floyd went from about 200k buys to 2.1 to over 1m regularly - i doubt he'd ever have become marque without that fight either way

why would the dlh fight have made floyd what he is? Obviously it helped, but it's not like it was a great fight or like he was overly impressive in it.

The quality of the fight doesn't really matter. Floyd was a famous person after the Oscar fight. That's what counts.

I think the fact that Mayweather put himself into the hip community with his rapping and hanging around popular rappers helped. The hip hop community will buy fucking anything.

Possibly. But I think the biggest factor is the fact Floyd's (and Pacquiao's) fights get play as legitimate sporting events by mainstream sports media.

i don't really buy the oscar made flod argument. Sure it helped ,but ODlh did'NTT made Hopkins or Mosley big draw. And their performance were far more convingcing

Floyd made Floyd with his brash behavior and demeanor, but Oscar was the one who gave him the platform to do it. I also think how he performed in his first PPV (against Gatti) is somewhat being overlooked here, that was an unbelievable asskicking.

Choof. Mainstream fans don't want good fights as much as they want to have an opinion on them before they start.

thats actually a good point. mayweather jr took advantage of the platform for sure. he already sold 400,000 ppvs a few times prior, as well.

Those fights didn't have 24/7 build up. Oscar/Floyd was promoted like crazy. Everyone knew about that fight.

Mosley and Hopkins fights aren't comparable.

Yeah, but no one bought the Gatti fight.

I just don't see Floyd reaching this level of fame without the massive fight with Oscar. Not a knock on Floyd, just reality I think in my mind.

The Oscar fight isn't the only reason. I don't think anyone is suggesting that. Floyd is way more marketable than Shane and Hopkins.

But Floyd isn't at the level of popularity he's at now without Oscar.
