Agreed with Cdogg on Gatti. They said of Ward that Ward could never win the big one, but the same could be said of Gatti. He really was more popular than good. That said his effort vs Baldomir was useful in that it shed light on the unfolding farce that 147 had been and was to become.

Cotto broke Paulies jaw. Broner couldn't even break Paulie's balls.

Gatti was in numerous classic fights, never disputed that

    Frank Fletcher was, too

LOL at your post as I don't want to discuss Gatti...i didn't pay a visit around here to discuss him....maybe in mythical matchups...not in threads unrelated to him

Nazim Richardson Hit it on the Head when he Said Something to the Effect of Paulie Having to Be EXCEPTIONALLY Skilled & Brave, Because EVERYBODY KNOWS he Lacks Power, yet he's Still Managed to Carve Out a Fairly Respectable Career for Himself...

I'd go one further and say that Paulies career is very respectable. The problem with not having power is that everyone KNOWS you don't have it. Boxing is all about keeping the other guy honest and trying to get enough done in those periods to win a round, cause damage, whatever. Guys come into the ring DISHONEST with Paulie because they know he can't do a fucking thing about it. Throw in Paulies small brittle hands and lack of physique and you've basically got a guy who has come close to emptying the sea with a thimble.

Paulie has done VERY well for himself considering his lack of power. Not only lack of power, but lack of physical strength, and being unexceptional in all other areas.

He has decent speed and movement, a lot of heart, and that's it. He's not even overly skilled, or accurate, or great defensively.

So does Khan, let's remember that too. He is probably one of the more obviously gutty fighters out there.

Definitely true. The problem with Khan is he puts himself in situations where his heart comes into play, when he doesn't have to. He just doesn't do a whole lot of thinking, period.

Yep, the Cotto fight made me a fan. Gotta admit he is amusing to watch too - with his silly haircut, facial expressions, silly shorts, and pitty pat punches.

No doubt. I find it hard to hate Khan these days, as you have to admire his heart, and his fights are surprisingly pretty fun to watch for a boxbot.

I agree with your post, just not the bolded part

I think he has no choice but to end up in those situations because he lacks the skills to avoid them

Khan vs. anyone who can even sort-of punch is guaranteed to be fun... you know the opponent will be a little bit flustered at the start by all the button-mashing combos but you also know they will begin to time him and hit him... before you know it, his silly fishface looks even sillier, he stumbles a lot, wobbles... and he tries fighting back... the guy has heart... he's not too good a fighter, but there's always potential for drama

    That's exactly it.

And the way he skates around the ring like a baby deer in his semi ktfo state makes for highly entertaining viewing.

I don't think that's always the case, but I'll rephrase & say "when he shouldn't have to."
