Listen folks, this is the first I've heard about a bout between Roy and Steve. I looked at Roy's record on boxrec, and there is no mention of an impending match against Steve.

This would be big news if it was true, I'm pretty sure we would have heard more about it folks.

Mex, I informed everyone about this aaaaaages ago. Here's the piece I did on it. If it's seriously going ahead that's mad.

The 'Celtic Warrior' - Steve Collins: "Between now and when I turn 50, if Roy wants to fight, i'll take the opportunity now!"

Collins, who is now 48, last fought in July 1997. In that fight, he faced American, Craig Cummings, for the WBO super-middleweight title which he won after stopping Cummings in the 3rd round. Since retiring in October that year at the age of 32, he has appeared in a film, a music video and on a television reality show. Earlier this year he was announced as the President of the Malta Boxing Commission. He's also kept himself in shape by working on his farm in Hertfordshire, England.

In a recent interview with World Boxing news, Collins spoke about life, his boxing career and one Man in particular, Roy jones jr!

You could sense a feeling of frustration and annoyance in his voice when he described what went on back then in the 90's and why he and Jones never got in the ring to face one another.

He believes that the two were the best super-middleweights in the 90's, but Jones ran from him. Collins went on to call him a "coward" and if Jones wants to fight him now, he'd jump at the chance!

"I was very happy with my boxing career, but there was one thing I wished for and chased for a very long time," he said,

"When Roy Jones was at his best and I was at my best, we were the two best super middleweights in the world. I had beaten Eubank, Benn and all these guys and Roy had beaten James Toney and these other guys in the U.S,"

"My argument was that I was the champion. I was known in America. I had beaten other world champions in Europe and I wanted to fight Roy Jones so bad. I even went to Pensacola and spoke with his managers and to his house!"

"He ran though and he wouldn’t have it. That is my big regret, that Roy Jones wouldn't give me the opportunity to have that one big fight before I retired and I don’t forgive him for that,"

"To me he was a coward for not taking me on. People say Roy Jones was a great fighter but I knew all along that Roy Jones didn't have a great chin. I swore to people that if I had gotten the fight with him, I guaranteed I would catch him on the chin and he would go out,"

"It just bothers me that people talk about him so much. The kid ran from me for all of his career. I’m 48 years old. So between now and when I turn 50 years old if Roy wants to fight, I’ll take the opportunity now!"

After listening to what Collins had to say, a brief response was given, by none other than Roy Jones jr himself!

Speaking to 8countnews.com, he had this to say on the matter:

"To say I am a coward, you have got to be crazy! I ain't never saying no to fighting him! I never ran from nobody! We can get it on right now! In the right situation I would come to Ireland or the UK."

When Jones was told that Collins had said that he had gone to his house back then to see him, Jones replied by saying, "Well I didn't see him!"

This, of course, is a fight that should have happened around 15 years ago!

Collins was seeking a showdown with Jones.

In March '95, Collins beat Chris Eubank to win the WBO super-middleweight title and beat him again later that September. He then went on to beat Nigel Benn twice in '96, keeping hold of the WBO 168lb title.

In comparison, Roy Jones was simply, Roy Jones. He had defeated James Toney in November '94 to win the IBF super-middleweight title and defended it a futher 5 times.

In November '96 he stepped up to light heavyweight where he beat Mike McCallum who Collins had lost to in February 1990.

A young Joe Calzaghe was set to face Collins in '97, but the fight was cancelled because it was said that Collins had suffered an injury leading up to the fight. Apparently, he had not, as it is claimed that he collapsed during a sparring session.

A fight between Collins and Jones was not looking likely to materialise, especially now that Jones was setting his sights on titles at higher weights.

Not long after this Collins announced his retiirement. Speaking at the British Boxing awards ceremony in Bloomsbury, London in October '97, he had this to say:

"I don't have the motivation that I once had,"

"My only way to carry on was to fight Roy Jones, but as there is no chance of that happening now, the only route I have is to retire,"

"The fight that would have kept me in boxing was against Roy Jones, but he has ducked me for two years, even though Frank Warren, my promoter, did everything to make it happen."

We see this in today's boxing World where arguably the two best fighters of their division do not meet. Floyd Mayweather jr versus Manny Pacquiao is the best possible example. This fight should have taken place a few years ago and now it seems that the two will never meet!

    Roberto Duran versus Alexix Arguello

Oscar De La Hoya versus Kostya Tszyu

    Riddick Bowe versus Lennoz Lewis

These are but a few of many fights that should have taken place. Yes, you may argue and feel that the fights listed above would have been more competitve than a Collins versus Jones matchup. Many agree, but many also believe that Collins would have stood a chance!

So, now you know. Steve Collins, 48, wants to fight Roy Jones jr, 43...provided it's by the time Collins turns 50!

Is Collins serious? Would Jones really face him?

Here's what some people had to say on this when the news broke out on twitter early in December:

'"That should never ever happen lol, that'd be like watching 2 of your uncles have a drunken fight at a family party" @DylanEM4PM

"I wont even watch it. Its just terrible." - @BillyW100

"It would be like one of those handheld camcorder traveller fights of the 90s when the dads starts scrapping" @galger76

"The only way that would make sense is if Flintoff v Dot Cotton was on the bill !!" @boxingfollowers

"I've seen Dot slap, that could be a good match up" @matmchale73

Only time will tell whether this will actually transpire or whether it will be swept under the carpet and forgotten about.

Collins was a remarkably articulate guy, he never got remembered as such, but looking back he was a good talker and a good fighter.

Check the first few minutes of 'Eubank vs Steve Collins I' in the recommended links at the end, it's ridiculous. Eubank wants to back out of the fight because Collins has been hypnotized and they cut to an interview with the hypnotist explaining how he's programmed Steve to feel no pain and see the punches coming at him 'about three times slower'.:scared:
