Macklin is indeed an embarassment. He's only getting this shots cos he's got the complexion and got the connexion.

no...i favor someone who can box and move...has some talent....ill join the bandwagon if he can beat someone like this....ive been watching boxing long enough not to overhype unproven guys like this who have not really been tested by anyone

Gatti was an exciting guy who lucked into one semi-legit title and was at his very best, a second-tier fighter

He's been looking fragile recently though, that's all wrong against a beast like Gaybox. He's struggled against unspectacular opposition, including Macklin himself, who Gaybox just blew away like he was nothing.

I've always rated Martinez, so wouldn't be that shocked if he somehow outfoxed Gaybox, but I do find it hard to see him winning.

Have you not seen Quillin? He's utterly average, and not slick at all. Golovkin would rape him.

I watched this fight and i saw a scrappy limited fighter in Macklin who can give a good show...against boxers...against big punchers like this kid...he had zero chance....what I want to see if Golovkin fight someone with good hand speed, can box well, tough...thats all......he has yet to face that....i think Peter can do that

I don't see any advantage he has apart from a bit of height and reach.

Golovkin can box too - better than Quillin, better timing, accuracy, footwork, punch picking.

You're mistaking aggression with a lack of skill. He has an aggressive style, but he is very technically adept. You don't have to be on your toes or countering to be a good boxer.

silent pro....ive been around here since i was 19 years old man.....i don't watch boxing as much anymore because it straight up has gone downhill....im sure any of the long time posters here would HATE to agree with that...i have seen Peter fight...he is nothing special but he has some talent...his range IMO would give the Golovkin problems

at least half of us (myself included) WOULD agree with that

Again, what does that have to do with Golovkin being the best in the division AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW? That is all anyone is saying, nobody is saying "hmm... let's see 1.Monzon 2. Golovkin 3.Hagler"

Macklin just beat Felix Sturm (regardless of what the judges say) and was very competitive with the reigning champ... you make it sound like Golovkin just stopped Antwun Echols

I don't watch too many HBO undercards these days.

Or Friday Night Fights for that matter.

Anyway, sort of in long form why I would bet a small amount on Martinez just to say I did, Golovkin probably has the ability to stop him, but the sort of narrative that Macklin troubled Martinez so much and was stopped so easily by Golovkin, and because Golovkin showed his proficiency in the things he's good at tonight, which is staying relaxed, cutting off the cage and doing damage...it is not a narrative I can really get behind.

For one, Matthew Macklin pretty much beat himself tonight, he clearly didn't come to fight and this sort of reputation he had as a bad stylistic match for GGG was exacerbated in the ring by the fact that he didn't actually fight like anything resembling his last 30 or so fights in the ring. Instead he tried to play the role of a matador and got beat up because he's not that kind of fighter.

Sergio Martinez on the other hand is actually GOOD at the sort of thing Macklin was attempting tonight, he's much quicker, is fast on his feet and more importantly can hurt respect with offense off of his back foot. He fought the same sort of fight he would need to beat Golovkin with against Chavez for 11 rounds, and for those 11 rounds he made it look exceptionally easy. Obviously Golovkin is a lot better than Chavez and likely punches harder, but the main point is that Sergio Martinez is indeed extremely proficient in a style that can give Golovkin trouble...it will TRULY test his perceived abilities in cutting off the ring, staying balanced, etc.

Also of note is that Sergio is the type of fighter that can knock Golovkin out if he's too careless in pursuit...it's highly unlikely given his build that Golovkin is as durable as Chavez Jr was. Lastly, Sergio doesn't have a granite chin, but he's very tough, oozes heart and grit and knows how to survive. Golovkin is a guy who rarely sees more than 5 rounds, how is he going to hold up late in a fight. This isn't Kassim Ouma we are talking about.

I'm never ever, ever, going to pick someone to steamroll a GREAT fighter without displaying the intangibles that makes great fighters great. So yes, I would make a small bet on Martinez.

I'm surprised you don't like this guy then, as he is a skilled stalker with power.

It's also not his fault he hasn't fought anyone, the division is just a bit of a wasteland. Quillin hasn't fought anyone either. The difference is Gaybox has looked like a beast fighting his average opposition, Quillin has looked nothing special.

I never understood him... he'd try like hell for five or six rounds, land a good shot here or there, eat about 300 of them and then quit

What's the point of going through all of that hell and then saying "nah"? Against anyone good, it basically became guaranteed that Campas would absorb crazy punishment and then give up

That's a fair post, the only thing is I don't think Martinez is going to be capable of producing the same performance that dominated Chavez. He looked AWFUL against Murray, to be honest I thought he was lucky to get the win. He looked old. Even if he could muster one last hurrah, I don't see Golovkin being dominated like Chavez was, he's vastly superior.
