Cdogg....Macklin beating Felix Sturm is not impressive...at least for me...yes I know we all got excited about Felix when he was robbed against De La Hoya despite Hoya being past his prime and completely out of his weight class....if Golovkin just stopped Antwn Echols i would be more impressed..LOL
I think at best Martinez wins by close decision to be fair...unless Golovkin doesn't have a great chin and walks into something, at worst he gets stopped early like everyone else. And yes he did look bad against Murray, but that's because it is Martin Murray. Look at how uninspired Hopkins looked against a bum like Enrique Ornelas only to turn around and have an amazing, historic performance against Jean Pascal. Or Vernon Forrest losing to a bum like Sergio Mora only to beat him easily in a rematch after he realized he shouldn't be losing to scrubs.
i guess when your a bully and an elite fighter steps up and starts punching in your face it can make you go mental...chavez turned into that a bit as he got older
Yep. He some good basic tools, he could both punch and take one but lacked that little extra will needed. Not that he would have ever been a world beater, but if had real desire he would be rembered for some wins, and not just a name on other fighter's resumes.
I agree with you completely.....very good fighter but not an all time great or anything.....being a good story, late bloomer, and having some highlight reel knockouts has an amazing way of turning a very good fighter into an all time great....having said that....Martinez had a good run and Im certain at his best..would take this kid we saw tonight to school....just jerky style and foot speed and hand speed would have prevailed...he has good power as well to keep him honest
His comp has been absolute shit and he has failed to dominate that comp... I can forgive a champion for ruling a weak division if he dominates (Bob Foster enjoyed basically a reign of terror at 175... his contenders were mostly nobodies, but he killed them) ... Martinez looks like shit most of the time against guys who can barely fight... in a better era, he's a good contender at best
I'd consider Paul Williams and Pavlik to be above average contenders. Williams particularly.....Pavlik was a little shaky at the time. Era really isn't relevant though....it's all relative to the guys they are actually fighting.
maybe so, but Chavez was used to dominating and he did so because he was more than just tough and strong, he was exceptionally talented and skillful... Plus, he had fights that were tough where he had to make adjustments and he made them and won Campas knew he was going to get punched in the face a zillion times because he wasn't good enough NOT to... yet he would act like "phew... didn't expect it to be so hard"
Pavlik was shit, man... good puncher, had heart... but he was nothing to write home about That KO over Williams was a fluke, a blind, wild shot that landed on the button... I don't think he would have duplicated that in 100 tries
that would elevate him a LOT in my eyes It's still not putting him on my top ten Middleweights ever list, but I'd think him a near-great fighter if he went out with a win like that
Well Pavlik wasn't great, but he was a big, gutsy middleweight with a punch and a decent jab. It was a very good win, especially considering the size difference. And I completely disagree about Paul. There was nothing flukey about it, he was looking for that punch since round 1, and ended up landing it perfectly.
dont ever think Im comparing them as fighters...Chavez is an all time great...i just threw him in there because Chavez who could take hell....as he got older...started finding ways out in fights where he felt he could not win which is something he never experience while in his prime....yory boy IMO quit when he felt he had no chance of winning
LOL I'm not THAT big a hater I mean he's better than guys like William Joppy and Keith Holmes who have held belts by a large margin... he's not bad or even mediocre by any stretch of the imagination... but when he retires, I'm not going to be saying to myself "now, there goes a legend" "GREAT" to me is reserved for clearly superior guys to Martinez ... Floyd (maybe not as a welterweight, but certainly everywhere below), JMM, Pac, Hopkins a long time ago, those guys are GREAT fighters
oh lord...would you have him in your top 30? I would not even have him there... there are a lot of good middleweights throughout history to go around
Zab has always been a good puncher, it's one of the only good things I could say about him Victor Ortiz is a pussy and sucks but he can absolutely punch very hard... DeMarcus Corley was a journeyman, but he was a journeyman with a punch... Castillo wasn't a true KO puncher, but quite heavy handed Corrales, his major flaws notwithstanding, hit like a truck A lot of fighters say they don't like facing a big puncher... who does? It hurts to get punched, even if you aren't "HURT", it doesn't feel good, nobody likes it... there's a big difference "I don't like to fight big punchers" and "I'm AFRAID to fight big punchers"
How could you not? Zab has always had very good single shot power, so has Mosley with the right hand. Mosley could punch at 147.
Chavez is one of my all-time favorites and is one of the best I've seen fight, but yeah, he was a huge fucking baby in his post-prime days... Still, it's easier to forgive a guy for turning into a big baby when he's already conquered the world Campas quit when a fighter should be hungry
I'm not saying he doesn't fight guys with absolutely no punch. But none of those guys outside of Corrales can be considered real "punchers" like Golovkin is. And Floyd didn't want to fight Plastercheato for the same reason when he was beating dudes over the head with bricks. True punchers are rare but I don't see Floyd fighting anyone like Golovkin or Matthyse. Hell, he admitted to being afraid of brain damage against Pacquiao...and Pacquiao was a lot smaller than him.
I'd have to think about it, honestly, you'd be surprised how thin things get when you endeavor to make a list that big It depends how you come up with your ranking...
