GGG vs Macklin: Final predictions

Buddy was certainly a good fighter, but definitely not great

 

I don't think he did. He boxed more the first time. He came out looking to KO Paul with the left hand in the rematch, and did exactly that.

damn...i really don't think we will ever see someone like Chavez come along again.....when Manny Pac went down which was predictable since he looked to be slippin I felt boxing lost one more of our all time greats.....when Floyd who i hate as a person but enjoy as a fighter is gone...i truly believe we will have nothing left...i really don't see anyone out there...part of the reason why I don't watch boxing nearly as much anymore...i watch MMA

it will get better in the decades to come... you just have to wait for other countries still somewhat new to the pro game to start producing the fighters in bulk from lightweight up that the US used to produce... it will happen eventually, we are seeing the very infancy of it right now... Boxing isn't dead, it's just in a downtime because of a major restructuring... there are still good fights to enjoy and from 130 downward, there are still lots of good fighters like there always was because the countries that always produced them are still doing it

Just watched the fight, pretty interesting for only 3 rounds.

Macklin looked good for about the first minute or so. Landed a few decent jabs, and moved ok. Then it all went down hill I'm not sure what punch it was, but you could tell something changed. Second round was like he was hoping GGG would slow it up even though the first round wasn't even that intense. Him listening to McGirt was like when your mom is trying to tell you something at your mind is elsewhere. "Yeah yeah, uh huh, yeah".

He fought back valiantly at times when Golovkin was bringing the heat in the 3rd, but it seemed like he figured that would be the easier way out. Maybe he knew he was going to be knocked out and just tried to get in a few of his own before it happened.

 

GGG will indeed waste Martinez, who's lost a lot in terms of legs and reflexes.

 

GGG and Lucas are easily the two most devestating punchers in the sport.

 

If Macklin was allowed to fight every fight at his own pace then he'd be undefeated and would be knocking everyones dick in. The problem with Macklin is that he is so desperately mono-paced. Any adjustment in the pace, up or down, which doesn't suit him, and he becomes hittable as hell. His chin, bravery, strength, its all there. Maybe not very heavy handed but has plenty of pop especially downstairs. I think its his footwork and defence that let him down once a change of pace comes. We have to bear in mind that this is a guy who could handle himself very very well with the likes of YB Campas, Martinez, Felix Spurm.

He ran into the propellers in the third to escape a long night of shit.

I am not one of these "Golovking Is God" sorts but he had his homework done on Matthew. He figured him out very very quickly, set a pace, got his shots in and took Macklin right out of his groove, which is how you beat Macklin.

 

Golovkin's smart and calculating. Great to watch.

 

And that's what I saw too. That's the first time I've watched him live against a guy who could have caused him serious problems. He had his homework done and that was most impressive. He immediately knew what tools to use and when to use them. Feeling out lasted around 30 seconds. He also showed a bit of class- perhaps the class of the truly non-plussed- but class nonetheless, when he declined to press an advantage he had after feet had tangled. I have a feeling he does not like people being rude to him.

 

Golovkin is a talent and is the goods. He got into his stride early on. Once Mackiin felt his power he had no option but to trade leather and came out worse of course. Golovkin is too precise and convincing. Nice technique all round too. Macklin's been in some wars and Golovkin was all wrong for him at the wrong time. No-one has ever done that to Macklin before so it's a solid win all round for GGG.

It looked like Macklin had shit himself after that body shot had landed. That was a brutal, well placed shot!

 

Yeah....it was like the Nunn-Kalambay KO. They could fight 100 times and that wouldn't happen again.

 

Absolutely, that's why I like him.

I agree with you, he has no idea what he's watching, been watching MMA for too long.

 

If people are still looking for a comparison point, compare how well Broner did versus Malignaggi as Golovking did with Macklin. One of them showed up focused with his homework done the other one allowed his opponent into the fight and preferred to front and pose rather than take care of business.

 

No doubt, Gaybox is all business, a pure fighter.

I would also love to watch him destroy Broner.

 

Well, in Broner's defense, he simply doesn't have GGG's power. That shouldn't be held against him. The shots Broner was throwing, he WAS trying to take Paulie out, just didn't have the same affect on Paulie that it did guys he was fighting at 130-135.

What Broner SHOULD have done was invest far more in Paulie's body. He got far too much caught up in the posing to do that though.

 

In Broner's defense, he is simply not very good, that's why he had a close fight with Paulie.

 

So what next for GGG? Unification title fight versus the winner of Geale/Barker? Chavez Jr? Jump up to 168?

 

Jumping to 168 would be silly, he's too small, he can make 154. The only obvious fight is Martinez at 160, but I'd also like to watch him slap Chavez jr around like a red headed step child.

 

I'd happily enjoy watching Golovkin punch Goofvez Jr repeatedly in the face.

 

Some guy on twitter said to me he thinks Golovkin moving up to 168 is a good move. If he was to face Ward then Ward would hit the canvas in 5. Personally, I respect Golovkin's tools and power, but Ward is technically sound himself and a good operator and Golovkin certainly wouldn't have it his own way.
