i like how crocadillo glossed over the article and quote where calzaghe basically admitted he faced a shell of jones jr. and how his own son realized he was in for an epic asswhipping vs the vintage version

Jones could have ended this discussion by actually fighting these guys. His resume is good, but it has some glaring holes as the poll demonstrates.

Unlike Jones' suckoff fan club, Jones knew he wasn't unbeatable. The few guys who did give him some trouble--hopkins, toney, griffin, harding, tarver--don't figure to be tougher fights than the guys in the poll and one of them could have caught Jones on an off night.

The sport is better these days because Americans don't get the free pass against foreigners that they used to. It's not a coincidence that the p4p rankings are full of foreigners now that they get more exposure, either.

I have no problem making prime Jones the favorite over anyone who has ever fought at his weight classes, but he cherry picked along the way and it shouldn't be ignored. Floyd's career has similarities.

The problem is Hopkins, Toney and Tarver were better fighters than anyone at that table fought. Griffin and harding were pretty much on the same level as the majority of the guys at that table fought...especially Calzaghe.

Eubanks was at least honest when he said he wasn't interested in fighting in the States (at least that was my interpretation). They all made money by staying where they were to circle jerk and fight each other rather than fight Jones. Eubanks came off the best (in my opinion). He was at least honest. Until this show I didn't realize Collins ducked Calzaghe.

As much as Collins wanted to see how he would have fared against Jones, I suggest he take a good look at how Ricky Hatton fared when he decided to leave the comforts of home and "test" his skills. Collins was definitely tough but that's about it. he would have been there to take an asswhupping. I don't see him doing any better than say Clinton Woods or Julio Gonzales.

"And like I said before..." even his trainer didn't believe he would have won.

I think everyone here knows it was a way past his prime Jones Jr. and Calzaghe shows his class in admitting that.....but it still doesn't prove that Calzaghe during his best at 168 could NOT have given Roy a helluva fight..(oh wait some people claim that calzaghe was in his prime when he fought Roy during his retirement swan song in the states at age 35 and a weight class heavier so of course he had no chance)

Calz would be as competitive with a prime Roy as Reggie Johnson was. Calz was a quality fighter, not saying he wasn't. But he's become overrated as Hell. He wouldn't have beaten the current Ward, let alone a prime Jones.

Cos Lewis weighed 250 {or like 290 for the Vatali fight} and Carl could come in at 185 for a fight with Roy.

Ironically, Ward is benefiting here from the same criteria that people use to discount Calzaghe.

That's fair but he would have beaten Ward...if Calzaghe was a guy who plods and throws one shot at a time then I would agree...except he was a good athlete who threw a lot of punches....only time i saw Calzaghe hesitant to throw was when he fought with a broken hand which was several times and didn't look to great either but still won

If Eric Lucas can go 11 rounds then Calzaghe will go the distance

You telling us he is going down in the same round as Vinny Paz....c'mon now

He ain't no Byrant Brannon, Antione Bryd, Vinny Paz, or Eric Lucas

I don't think Calzaghe was very good but then again he never fought anybody really other than Kessler and an old Hopkins so I guess no one knows for sure because he was content to spend most of his peak as a fighter fighting crappy mandatories he never really had a big fight until he fought Lacy but then again Lacy wasn't that good definitely not as good as a lot of American fans thought he was keep in mind a shot Roy Jones beat Lacy about as easily but I guess that doesn't really tell us much because Lacy lost his confidence to Calzaghe who then went on to beat Kessler but not as convincingly as Ward did but Calzaghe beat him first even though Ward looked better doing it.

He fought a lot of wasteful mandatories...no doubt

    But

    Roy Jones at Supper Middle
    His entire title defense resume
    Antoine Byrd
    Merqui Sosa
    Bryant Brannon
    Eric Lucas
    Tony Thorton
    Vinny Paz

Beating a prime Kessler is light years a better defense then any of those bums listed
Throw in Robin Reid who was outright robbed later against Sven Ottke
Byron Mitchell was a good win as well
    Richie Woodhall
    Charles Brewer
All those guys individually would easily beat any of those bums on Jones list

I think Roy Jones outspeeding a fat counter punching James Toney really gave him that unstoppable super middle weight legacy that everyone seems to have....but after that...he fought complete nobodies

Toney had nothing on offer that night. They were giving him shots to piss. He ate lettuce for the last week before the fight. Amazing he stayed upright.

Calzaghe was a badly managed fighter for large stretches of his career.

He was big time....I know he had to force Frank Warren to come to the states and warren only did that because he was at the end of his career

I would have brought him to the states a long time ago and hired a trainer that could actually teach the man how to turn over his punches and leave the roadwork to the father...man would have been a superstar over here
