I'm glad it happened. If Silva had won, he'd keep fighting all those boring contenders for the remainder of his career. Weidman looks good, but he ain't anything special.
“Chris is the champion now,” said Silva, who had held the title since Oct. 14, 2006. “I’ve finished my working. I won’t fight for the belt anymore. Chris is the new champion. No, [I’m not retiring]. I have 10 more fights [on my contract], but I won’t fight any more for the belt. I’m tired. My time for the belt is finished now.” I don't get it. He'll fight contenders and has beens from now on?
Yawn... You Said YOURSELF You DIDN'T Expect Weidman to Win THE WAY he Did, so Don't Pat Yourself on the Back Toooooooooo HARD there, Homey... REED:nono:
Silva EASILY Rolled Side to Side, to Minimize the Effects of the Leglock...He NEVER Looked in Pain or Close to Tapping...He's Simply Roll Left or Right, Depending on Where the Pressure was Being Applied... REED:hammert:
Sounds like he Wants to Go the Rampage Jackson/Gatekeeper Route, Which is SILLY... Get a RE &/or Move Up Full Time to Lightheavy...If Silva were to BEAT Some Top 10 Guys, a SLIVER of Intrigue for Bones-Silva Could Be Recaptured... REED Certainly ISN'T Watching Silva Fight 10 MEANINGLESS Bouts... REED:hammert:
What a STRANGE Fight... Initially, it Looked like Silva-Sonnen Part III, when Weidman Easily Got the Takedown...He Landed Some Shots from Top Position, Silva Rolled w/Others, then Started Controlling Weidman's Arms... REED Doesn't Think Silva was EVER Threatened by the Attempted Leglock...He NEVER Seemed Rushed, Pained or Panicked...Just Rolled his Body Side to Side...1nce they Got Back to their Feet, Silva Seemed EMBOLDENED & Weidman Seemed to have a Look of Shock &/or Confusion on his Face... Silva EASILY Stuffed a Couple Takedown Attempts in Round 2 & there's No Doubt Weidman had to Take a Moment or 2 to Adjust his Strategy...But to his Credit, he Said FUCK IT & had the Confidence to Beat Silva STANDING, the 1 Way NOBODY Predicted he Would or Could... Silva CLOWNED as he Has vs. Forrest, Bonnar & Others, but Unlike in those Fights, Silva WASN'T Building on the Showboating...Usually, the Clowning is a PRE CURSOR to Silva ENDING the Fight, but he NEVER Came Close to Doing that w/Weidman...NEVER Even Really Landed Any Meaty Shots, from what REED Can Recall... The COUNTERPUNCHING we're Used to Seeing from Silva Just WASN'T There...He was Either Unwilling OR Unable...Then, he Gets Stupid in the Pocket and it's a WRAP... THE Most Surprising Aspect was Silva DECLINING a RE...Hopefully he was just Being OVERLY Classy in the Moment...By ALL Means, he Should PURSUE a RE... REED:hammert:
Has nothing to do with me. I expected Chris to win the way he dominated the first round. The KO was shocking no doubt. But make no mistake, without the ko, Silva get repeatedly taken down and handled. Weidmann is too good at the the thing silva has problems with.
While my commet was more on the future of Chris, make no mistake, Chris' had an effect on this fight. The fear of being taken down was heavy in silva's ind, that is why he was iffy with his kicks durring standup.
Yep, he's 38. But the Silva in the cage last night would sill have made guys like Griffin, Belfort, Bonnar, etc look silly. The difference was that he was fighting a more talented fighter both mentally and physically than those guys and the clowning cost him. It wasn't age. It was lack of respect and stupidity.
Weidman WON the 1st Round, but it WASN'T Domination, Bro...If You Scored it 10-8, that's YOUR Business... After Having a Couple Takedown Attempts STUFFED, Weidman STOPPED GOING for them in the 2nd...So there's NO BASIS for Saying Silva Would've "Repeatedly Gotten Taken Down & Handled"...Weidman was Pretty SURPRISED when Silva Evaded the Leglock & Got Back to his Feet... So to his Credit, he Beat Silva @ his OWN Game... REED:hammert:
No, I agree Silva defended it well and it wasn't close to a fight-ending hold. I'm just saying that when Weidman chose to give up dominant position to attempt it, I thought he was going to get it.
I didnt give it a 10-8. But i have it a 10-9 because he dominated the round. Silva did absolutely nothing in that round. Weidman took him down. landed significant punches from the top and attempted a few submissions. Compare that to silva doing shit and that is domination. And i wouldnt call him beating silva at his own game. Weidman is a great striker too. That is his game as well as wrestling. He KOed, three devastating Strikers in his short career. Hall, Munoz and now Silva. I would say striking is definitely a huge part of his game.
1st post! Thanks for having me guys! Tough loss for Silva. Many of us saw it coming though. This was Andersons 1st legit challenge in quite a while. Anderson showboats like this all the time and someone finally capitalized on it. Congrats to Weidman who was not a bit intimidated by one of the greatest ever. Curious to see what this does to Anderson now though. I think it can take away this aura of invincibility and we can see a steady decline.
No, it would definitely be called beating Silva at his own game. Silva is one of the most renowned strikers in he history of he sport. Weidman beat him at his own game. It's no different than saying Jon Jones beat Sonnen at his own game. Sure, Jones has great MMA wrestling. That doesn't change the fact that he beat Sonnen in a aspect of MMA that was Sonnen's greatest strength. Weidman beat Silva in an aspect of MMA that Silva was considered superior.
Weidman is a high level striker. Again, look at his KO's. All against superior Strikers. I think it's safe to say that Striking is a strong weapon in Weidman's game. Silva should have not played. Even sonnen was catching Silva with punches and even dropped him twice.
For all the time I've seen valdosta posting, he's been right much more often than he's been wrong in his fight picks. Nobody's right 100% of the time.
I think Weidman's wrestling and BJJ had something to do with him winning that first round. Without them, he wouldn't have. Anderson tried to keep it standing in the second round because he knew what had happened in the first round. He clowned around standing but he definitely didn't want to get taken down again. That being said, the wrestling and BJJ indirectly led to the stoppage. The main ingredients were Weidman's power and Silva's clowning, or at least that's the way I see it.
This. The fear of fighting Anderson Silva will not be the same. Not tking anything away from Chris, he may very well be a special fighter but I did not see that last night. The defeat was more about Silva then Weidman IMO. Anderson still has that explosive attack, be punches or kicks but He acted the clown last night and paid the price.
It's weird. That left hook didn't look like it had that much on it. Anderson looked like he'd been shot in the slow motion replay. He was all googly-eyed like a Bugs Bunny anvil fell on him, and then WHAMMO, the follow-up was merciless.
The fact that it was close to getting in means he didn't rush it. The best time to do those is before everyone is soaking wet. That said, I thought he rushed it, haha. Position before submission would seem to apply when you are clearly winning against an all-time great. Props to Weidman for going for it. I think it would have been an even more impressive win had he finished Silva in that leg lock (knee bar), but obviously it was impressive, regardless. Silva tried to take away from Weidman's performance by acting like he doesn't want to fight anymore. Even if true, the prefight stuff--kissy kissy, not touching gloves...the during-fight inappropriate showboating. In retrospect, I think Silva probably was afraid of Weidman and this was all his version of whistling past the graveyard. The punch that put Silva down did not look very hard at all. The replay showed that it knocked him out, though. I think he was doing jedi training and didn't even have his eyes open when he got tagged so it caused a lot more damage than it otherwise would have. A couple of other things...I didn't think Weidman was that good on his feet going into the fight. He is, at worst, very good on his feet. I was talking to another fan earlier in the evening and he actually said he thought Weidman was a better fighter overall than Silva, but thought he might be too inexperienced. No way I would have said that. I thought Weidman would be somewhat outclassed on his feet, but he wasn't. Sure, he showed no kicks and took several from Silva, but he was able to do just fine with his hands and keeping the kick damage to a minimum. Second point, Weidman is a 2 time all american at 197 lbs so he would have projected to being a light heavy in mma, not a middleweight.
Agree. It wasn't a desperation, spinning back elbow a la sonnen or faber, it was a legit, calculated attempt at getting a rather difficult submission against the goat. He wasn't afraid.
I'm not the conspiracy theorist type, but this link with video has me wondering WTF... http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2013/7/7...-tells-interviewer-that-losing-by-ko-to-chris
Silva is bored with the sport. He's 38, the fire isn't there anymore. He would've toyed with Weidman a couple of years ago. The Silva that raped Franklin would've done the same to Weidman.
