The movie made $29 million in its first week. The budget of the movie was between $215 and $250 million and the marketing costs where $150 million.

This Flick had FAILURE Written ALL OVER It...

First of All, it Starred Johnny Depp, but Since Depp's Face was Covered in Makeup & he DIDN'T LOOK Like Johnny Depp, it Meant VERY FEW Females would Want to See It...2nd, the Lone Ranger Looked like a FAG, so Cats like REED, who Grew Up Watching the Original, had Little Interest...

    Double Whammy...

Who the fuck greelit 400 Million bucks for a Western?

Did they think these assholes could turn a shitty Disney ride into a billion dollar franchise, so they could do it to any old piece of antiquated garbage they threw at them?

Nobody was interested in this 30 years ago, and I guess they aren't now.

Johnny Depp hasn't been in a good movie in years. His work with Burton is especially shite.

Depp's Still BOX OFFICE Though...When his FACE & CHARM are Showcased...Casting Depp as a STOIC, WAR PAINTED Native American Was a RISK from Day 1...

Sure, the ladies love the guy but his recent movies are pretty awful. I think most people are bored with Depp. He could turn it around by choosing better scripts / movies but I would imagine he doesn't give a rats. 20 Million, yes please.

I slightly disagree with you here. If anything I think Depp was the strongest selling point the movie had going for it. Depp's face was covered but his penchant for outstanding character acting made it moot IMO. Now I totally agree that they blew it by casting some guy nobody ever heard of to play the Lone Ranger. Even though I've watched the trailer 5 or 6 times I just realized that I had never looked at the guy playing the Lone Ranger until today.

They'll probably never make another big budget western again. The last 3 all flopped big time. (this, Wild Wild West, Cowboys & Aliens)

w/Out Question, Johnny Depp was "The Lone Ranger's" STRONGEST Selling Point...He Could've Obviously HELPED Justify/Recoup Alot of the Budget, if Used PROPERLY...

Even in Costume, the FACE of the Quirky Characters (Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow, etc.) is USUALLY Johnny Depp...In this Case it Wasn't, which AUTOMATICALLY Compromised the Level of Interest Amongst FEMALES...The Quirky Characters are Fine & Dandy, but @ the End of the Day, Bitches Wanna See his "Pretty Little" Face...Depp ISN'T Box Office Because of his Strong Character Acting (Although he's a Damned GOOD Character Actor), Bro...

Totally agREED on the Westerns Though...

Yeah but now it is pretty extreme. He is hardly recognisable as Johny Depp.

w/or w/Out Make-Up, as Loooooooong as Depp is RECOGNIZABLE, he's BOX OFFICE...

REED Likes "Artsy", but Burton's "Artsy" to that David Lynch Extreme, Where it's PRETENTIOUS..."Hey Guys, Look @ Me, I"m WEIRD!!!"....

I always assumed it was Burton who went after Depp to be in his movies.

Caricature of ones self springs to mind. Burton discover a winning formula back in the day and instead of developing as a director he stuck with that formula. Unfortunately for him that doesn't work for any artist.

His box office success came late in his career with the first Pirates of The Caribbean. Besides that franchise (and Alice in The Wonderland) most of Depp's films have not being very successful or just plain tanked. In fact there was a time when studios considered him almost poison at the box office...he just couldn't open a movie until Disney came knocking at his door. I think that Tom Cruise is a bankable star ever since Risky Business in the early 80's. Cruise had very few box office failures in his career while Depp has very few hits.
