Yes, but in European Sportswriter circles it is considered brilliant defensive strategy, so we need to just respect that and stop pretending that we are a bunch of boxing fans discussing boxing on a message board dedicated to boxing

:giggle: your passion towards Wlad is respectable I admit.

All I am saying was that Irish's claim that Wlad is not known for boxing is not TOTALLY WRONG IN ALL CONTEXTS. Also the messageboards in here usually don't mention him holding. Yes, the fans and writers here know less of the sport than Americans, and perhaps that explains the whole difference too. Sheesh

Sorry for my wording. "In here" meant "here in Europe". It is obvious his holding tactics is the main subject about him on this board, which is why I thought Irish was referring to something else

Fight was over in a few rounds with Mormeck down twice, probably three times if you count the one he got away with, a totally beaten fighter who won not one minute of the fight. Compare that to Lewis vs Tyson, Akinwande vs Lewis, Hatton vs Urango, Ruiz vs Everyone. How ironic that a gimme fight the guy took to get his 50th KO {ah yes, holding, the usual route to dominant KO victory } was received so poorly after the effort he went to get that moron Haye to finally fight him, going a distance that the likes of Floyd would not go with Manny {or vice versa} just to get the fight made.

I thought it was Hanz. Now, I would say mikE. Whoever they were, bringing attention to the meagre efforts of a certain Mr De Bruin certainly did the trick.

Wlad holds. He never throws any punches and he never tries to get his man out of there.

Remember that time he had the fight sewn up vs Sam Peter {dominantly favoured to knock Wlad out} and in the last round Wlad ran like a bitch like Manny told him to once he had the decision sewn up.

It wasn't just "bitch tactics". He threw an awful lot of quality leather. He ripped off 5 hooks at one point in a cluster. I don't mind people underlining the negative but you have to throw it all in there. Its not objective otherwise. And, to cap it all off, since when have fight fans laboured like scholars over the minutiae of a gimme-fight a guy took just to get his 50th KO, a fortiori a fighter they repeatedly and strenuously claim to have absolutely no interest in, and whose fights they never watch.

Let's just bear something else in mind....he's yet to be found with something in his piss, like Vargas, or with his name on a list, like Shane or Evan, or with something in his gloves, like Tito or Margarito. And when confronted with the slime of life, like Haye in a shopping mall, or Truffle Boy in the ring, he's conducted himself with as much grace as you could hope for in any person. When push came to shove, Haye wouldn't even man up and share a sofa with him in the Sky Sports studios. Maybe that ghetto thug Chisora-Haye shit is what people want, but 110% of shit is still that. Shit.

Ironically, the British press somehow decided that two blacks fighting each other in Germany in a studio was an indictment of German security rather than an indictment of British society. I ask your holy fucking pardon.

If you want to pick negative peanuts out of the menagerie of turds that form the droppings of boxing, you can do a lot worse than to sniff and pick around elsewhere, thank you kindly.

Your smoke screen is not working. I have eyes and I watched the fight. And I saw Wlad grab onto the washed-up former cruiserweight many, many times. You can PRETEND it didn't happen and try to talk around it if you like, but that's what happened. If Wlad had ANY balls as a fighter, that fight wouldn't have made it past the second round.

Not much of a response. But I wasn't expecting much of one anyways when it comes to the Klitschko apologists.

Wlad holds a lot. Anyone with EYES can see that. Who gives a crap about how he is viewed in articles? This tangent you and Irish went off on here is irrelevant to the subject of Wlad and how he fights. If you think his holding tactics equal "masterful defense", then I guess we see this sport very differently.

I don't even have the right words to describe how bad it was. The only redeeming point I can think of is that Mormeck didn't last a few more rounds.

Yes, being hit repeatedly and swiftly in the skull....had the desired effect. Eventually. After 3 and a bit completed rounds. What a long fight!!!!! Almost as long as Vera Drake vs Accident.

Wow. You finally said something that resembles the truth (even though you were trying, and failing, to be clever with it). If Wlad spent less time hanging onto Mormeck like he was a prime Tyson, it would actually have been an impressive performance. And then you wouldn't need to waste so much of everyone's time trying to pump up this underwhelming effort against an opponent with zero chance of winning.

I never tried to pump anything up. It was a less-than-stellar, less-than-four-rounds worth of demolition of a guy brought in for Wlad to get his 50th KO of. :dunno: I was not aware so many of you had watched it.

That's fair. Its more than fair. But it then raises the question....why get the hump, as a boxing fan, over a fight which did not proclaim any great pedigree, and which cost nothing, when all around you is expensive ppv bs which claims to be the rescuer of boxing? Why find in Wlad something to be disproportionately upset about? And, at that, he still threw an awful lot of quality leather. The sound of some of his shots landing was plain scary. I agree, why follow up a cluster of hooks with a lean-on? But then again, how many guys can rack off a cluster of hooks to begin with?

"Klitschko Apologists".....Hmm...at best, we are "Wlad Klitschko Apologists".......and even if we limit the discussion to the younger of the pair, its still not right to act as if we are "apologizing" for anything. I never excused the holding. {and yes, it is a form of defence, and it is a part of the sport of boxing}. What I asked people to do was to behave objectively and with some degree of proportionality relative to the interest they proclaimed in the fighter and his fights and relative to the otherwise professional and sometimes brutal manner in which he disposes of opponents.

One thing which always drew my immediate attention was how the holding, which more or less kicks in around 2005, is attributed to his entire career, and the losses, the last of which happened in 2004, are also mentioned as if they were recent, defining events. Nobody defines Emile Griffiths career by the sudden, shocking manner of his loss to Hurricane Carter. Nobody pores over Gene Fullmers 15 round win over Florentino Fernandez and ponders why the bummish Carter got the same fighter out of there in one round. Nobody defines Juan Manuel Marquez career by turgid losses to Chris John or Freddie Norwood, or being put on his ass by a guy that couldn't do a fucking thing with Ricky Burns. Shit happens.

The same people that come on here to say that they won't be tuning for Wlad vs Povetkin will be the same ones who will quietly tune in, pay nothing, hope something goes wrong for Wlad, and if it doesn't, will come out in a rash complaining about holding in a fight they said they had no interest in and a fight which they ultimately paid nothing for.

    Remarkable. :dunno:

Like I said before...I guess we see things really differently. I don't think anyone denies that Wlad has serious offensive tools at his command when he chooses to stop fighting scared and use them. And it's not like I'm looking for a reason to criticize the guy (no matter how many times you say otherwise). I am a "call them as I see them" kinda guy as a boxing fan. But it IS frustrating watching him fight so cautiously against fighters who have zero chance of beating him.

I will most likely watch Wlad-Povetkin if I don't have anything important to do when it's on. And I don't have a horse in this race, as they say. It's not like Povetkin winning makes the division any more interesting.

If Wlad takes care of business to the best of his abilities and wins impressively, then I will say that's what he did. But, if after a couple of rounds it's apparent that Povetkin is just another overmatched so-so opponent who Wlad should take care of easily and we are forced to endure many rounds of him pecking and clinching mixed in with just enough real punching to frustrate us and make us wish he was doing more of it...then I will bitch about it. And that's my right as a boxing fan.

This is actually a very fair and balanced statement. I can totally see why some boxing fans don't like Wlad's style and that it frustrates people, and I would like to see open up more.

I just want to stress (very often, I admit) that we can't really bash Wlad's results based on the style he gets them: otherwise it would be like bashing Ali's results because he moved so much instead of standing and trading, which would have made for better fights. The fact that all of Wlad's opponents aren't too good is naturally true. Povetkin should be one of the better contenders of the past years

Moving of course is legal and clinching ain't. And since we're all at the point where we're just having the same conversations over and over () I'll repeat myself too - I blame shit refs way more than Wlad. Wlad has his health and his bank balance to look after - his job is to win. The reffing has to change.
