He was 5'9" with a shortish midsection. He was not a big MW. He was ripped, he was lean, but he was not big at the weight, not by a long shot.
Yep. Jackson could punch, but he was so-so otherwise as a fighter. And his competition was absolutely pathetic before the McCallum fight. It got a little better after that (there's no way it could have been worse), but there really wasn't a lot of quality wins on his resume.
I said he wasn't small for the weight class. He wasn't. He's like Benn was at middle or even supermid. Not small.
Now you've done it. We will now be "treated" to pages of BoxRec "stats" in the attempt to "prove" by how Hagler was much more "wasn't small" than he was "not big"
Despite the fact that mikE likes to go against the majority, I reluctantly agree with him about Hagler, he wasn't a small middleweight. He wasn't a big one for sure but he was an average sized middleweight of this era.
Ok, but mikE said the guy looked like a juicer (he really didn't, but whatever) ... That seems less than compatible with "average sized middleweight"
Marvin had freakishly long reach. With his great sense of timing and distance combined with that wingspan, he easily out boxed taller guys who were good boxers themselves like Sugar Ray Seales, Alan Minter, Wilford Scypion, Cyclone Hart and Fulgencio Obel.
Sonny Liston was a little shorter than me and he had an 84" reach... that is by far the craziest I've heard For reference, reach is usually pretty close to height If your 6 feet (72 inches) tall, your reach will typically be close to 72 inches Sonny Liston was 73 inches tall but his reach was 84 inches... an increase of 11 Hagler was 69 inches tall with a reach of 75... an increase of 6 inches Vitali Klitschko, on the other hand is 79 inches tall (or 80, depending on whether he is 6'7 or 6'8, there seems to be conflict) and his reach is 79 inches Rocky Marciano was 71 inches tall but had only a 67 inch reach
Marvin Hagler...that actor? he had a little go at boxing? that's pretty cool, kinda like Mickey Rourke
Mickey Rourke couldn't fight 35 years ago and he can't fight now. That will be a fun walk down memory lane to tell here sometime for a good laugh. I did see that one Hagler film where he played a mercenary, and it was pretty awful. Max Baer was a lot better in "The Prizefighter and the Lady".
