Looked pretty good from the clip. I liked the way he really unloaded when his opponent was hurt on the ropes.

My thoughts as well... a bit more of a crouch in the legs, but very similar approach, good sense of distance and that right hand was a beauty

He is even better now with Rudy training him as he picks his shots and sets himself up more, and he's really coming along with that left hand action as well.

He has excellent judgement of distance and timing. Definitely has power too.

 

The kid is good, but for having only 9 fights in his record he should not start a fight with his arms down like if he have already control of the fight. That cocky gesture could backfire big time against a heavy puncher. Just saying.

He was a fine fighter, Little... Relaxed backfoot style and a good puncher ... Was robbed several times before winning the title. Tell your PE teacher he was a terrific technician!

 

Be that as it may, it's not very intelligent. It's the first thing I noticed and I fucking hate guys who do that. Sure a few guys have the talent to fight in that stance but it's really the dumbest shit you can do. Your arm has a longer distance to travel to the target and it's out of position on defense. The only purpose it serves is you look kind of cool, but even that's only in your own mind. I think fighters who do that probably think too highly of themselves and aren't grounded or humble enough.

At the same time the kid looks remarkably talented and looks like he could be a star. I just wish he'd fight a in a more traditional stance. It would actually enhance his strengths.

 

Guy you may have heard of, "Tommy Hearns," used to hold his left low like that on occasion

BTW: I don't rate Burley as a great fighter.

Charley was a good and honest pug, but his skills and reputation have grown in death as it never could have while he was an active fighter.

 

I believe Archie Moore & Eddie Futch would pick a bone with that if they were here, Karl.

 

Ask yourself this then: If he was so great and they were his biggest fans, why didn't they campaign for a title shot for the guy?

If he was as great as revisionist fans who were not there are saying, why didn't every fight fan hear about this guy 40 years ago?

Why wasn't he paraded as the greatest fighter ever then?

The truth is he was not a great fighter.

Moore or Futch never once approached the press to lobby for his cause, if indeed there ever was one, and I highly doubt that.

 

Burley does not belong in the IBHOF, either.

To exclude a great middleweight champion like Rodrigo Valdez and have this guy in shows you what a joke that place is.

Most of those people probably don't even know who Rodrigo was and then put Burley in after never seeing the guy fight.

If you ever talk with one of the people who actually votes in those, you are going to be amazed by the lack of real boxing knowledge the overwhelming majority of them have.

 

Why on earth would Moore or Futch take it on themselves to 'lobby the press'?

I have been following boxing since 1966, and I never heard of the guy until the know-nothings at HBO and ESPN (whoever they are) decided to champion his cause, and like I indicated, I doubt if one ever existed in the first place for Charley.

Burley was a good, workman-like pug, nothing more and nothing less.

 

Well they certainly aren't 'revisionist fans who weren't there' are they, they're credible sources who rated him before HBO was even founded.

That video clip is evidence, but it sure as hell does not do enough to convince me that this guy was a legend worthy of being in the hall of fame.
