My godfather had a co-worker buddy back in the 70s who fought Esteban DeJesus at the Felt Forum... George "Kid" Foster was his name

Got his ass handed to him... He said the guy's girlfriend left midway through the fight in tears and that the guy actually came to work the following Monday wearing sunglasses and moving gingerly... After half a day, he went home and came back the next week:lol:

Still, that's the Kind of Story you Can BRAG About, Decades Later...REED's Isn't Soooo Glamorous....

REED Went to a NOTORIOUSLY HARDCORE Middle School in Inner City St. Louis...A MIDDLE School w/Metal Detectors (& this was in Like '83-'84)...A Few Dudes had Full Blown MUSTACHES, Looked 16 or 17 & even DROVE to School...Again, MIDDLE School...

Anyways, Among the Hardcore Set was Carl Daniels, a Small, Quiet, Unassuming Dude, who had a Reputation for Being the "Boxing" Dude of the School...He Wore his St. Louis Golden Gloves Jacket & Everything...In Streetfights, he'd Show Up w/WRAPPED Hands...Being a Boxing Fan, REED was in AWE of Carl Daniels...Soooo Much So, REED Got Caught STARING @ him for a Bit Toooooo Looooooooong 1 Day, to the Point Daniels Said, "You Got a Fuckin PROBLEM, or Something!?"...REED Couldn't Even Muster a Reply & Simply Walked the Other Direction....

Daniels Probably Thought REED was a Peter Gazing QUEER or Something...Sooo, Uuum, Yeah, that's REED's "Encounter" w/a Real Life Fighter...

This is just the type of story that will grow bigger in years to come.

This reminds me of a story I once heard in an interview from Ingemar Johansson. As a junior he had sparred with some local kid and slipped on the canvas during it. Then years later he heard how there had been another kid in his gym who had bounced him around but had had to retire before reaching his potential. Ingo met this guy when he was the world champion and realized that the rumor was started and told on by this kid himself.

So, in two decades or so, you will have a great boxing career BEHIND you :partie:

Was Carl a number 1 contender at some point? I definitely remember his name from the old KO magazine alphabet rankings.

Considering that he had the guts to face Hopkins but not Reed tells you quite a bit about Reed's look

Not Sure if he was Ever # 1, but he was a World Class, Perennial, Top 10 Jr. Middleweight for a Good Bit of Time...

Fought Terry Norris, JC Vasquez, Laurent Boudouani & BHop...Daniels Didn't BEAT Any of them, but Acquitted Himself Fairly Well in Each Instance...Became Just a NAME on a Resume, After that...

Going into the Norris Fight, his Record was 26-0, 17KO's...In the Latter Phase of his Career (Post BHop), he LOST 14 of 17...His Final Tally was 50-18-1, 32 KO's...

A Small, Sick Part of REED WISHES Daniels had @ Least CHIN CHECKED Him That Day, for the Sake of Storytelling....

Daniels won the vacant wba jm belt over Julio Cesar Green and then lost it in his next fight against Julio Cesar Vazquez.

Green was a tough, good fighter so it wasn't a walkover title fight like what happens pretty often. He was on USA a lot back then.

Daniels was a good win for Dawson, but then he instantly became a name opponent who lost to everyone. I didn't realize how bad it got until I just checked his boxrec. After Dawson, he went 1-13.
