Kovalev is being overrated because of his power. He hasn't faced anyone with a high skill level and I guarantee with his style hes susceptible to counterpunchers.

When guys are afraid of you and can't move their head it's alot easier to win volleys of punches with no regard for your own head movement or defense.

Ward beats him convincingly...Adonis is a good fight.

Stevenson has more explosive power. He's knocked multiple people out on their feet.

Kovalev seems to stun guys with his punches.

Kovalev has foreman type 'loaded gloves' power, Stevenson seems to have more Louis/Robinson type 'holy shit that looked like an industrial accident' power. Both hit insanely hard

There are some opponents out there, but not many:
    Hopkins
    Bute/Pascal winner
    Shumenov
Erdei (who is still really the lineal champ, not Stevenson)

I'd say the best path to a superfight between Stevenson and Kovalev is:

    Kovalev killing Bernard.
    Stevenson beating Bute (or Pascal)

and then just match them up.

Shumenov is a good follow-up fight for the winner; Erdei is a decent fight for the loser. Ward would be the next superfight. Froch could probably cut in line somewhere if he wanted to, but I suspect he'll stay at 168.

I think Hopkins will have enough brains to retire before fighting either of these guys.

I'd love to see Kovalev vs leap-amateur delux Jean Pascal

You're reading too much into this. Stevenson is pretty much an idiot. He always stutters, even when he speaks in French and is not nervous and exhausted.

Tough, I agree that he's not too interested in fighting Kovalev right now, the Froch and Hopkins fight would be way more lucrative for less risk. After the schedules he's been through in the las year, he deserves such a fight

Stevenson is not as skilled as Kovalev in the traditional way. He's more like a Hamed, who uses angles and head movement to set up his big punches, and uses weird unorthodox punches. The puch he landed to cause the kd was very hamed like

I like this idea, it would set the table nicely for a Stevenson-Kovalev fight

Kovalev, for Many of the Same Reasons Already Listed in this Thread...

Better 2 Fisted Puncher...Stevenson Can Hurt You w/SOME Shots, but Kovalev Can Hurt You w/ANYfuckingSHOT...Much More of an EFFORTLESS Puncher...Imagine if Kovalev Applied StevensonESQUE Torque on his Shots????...REED Wouldn't Even Wish THAT Level of Carnage Upon Antonio Tarver...

As YOU Noted, Kovalev's Beard LOOKS Stout Too...Nice & SQUARED, Like a Durable Chin is SUPPOSED to Look...No, he Hasn't Faced Any ELITE Level Bangers Yet, but Kovalev Faced a Pretty Good CLUB Level Puncher Named Cornelius White, who has a GAUDY KO% Himself...He Touched Kovalev a Time or 2 w/ZERO Response from Kovalev...

Kovalev's PATIENCE is Extremely Underrated, Because his Knockout Ratio & the BREVITY of his Bouts Suggests Otherwise...He Pursues but he's NEVER Reckless, NEVER Wild...Punches are Almost Always SHORT & Compact...Guard Always HIGH & TIGHT...Jabs his Way In...Very SKILLED Fighter...Underrated Athletically Too...Pretty GOOD Footwork, Handspeed ISN'T the Best, but he's Definitely NOT Slow in that Regard, Either...

Like Brother X Said, Kovalev's a HORRIBLE Matchup for Andre Ward...Ward COULDN'T Keep Kovalev from Walking him Down & Would have to Fight Absolutely PERFECT, for 12 FULL Rounds to Win...Stevenson has a PUNCHER'S Chance & the Handspeed to LAND on Kovalev....He WILL Chin Check Kovalev, if Kovalev Doesn't Get to Him 1st...

But Even w/That, REED Would Rate Kovalev an 80-20 FAVORITE Over Stevenson...Stevenson's Still WILD, JITTERY, he's OLDER than Kovalev AND he's Been Stopped Before by a MUCH Lesser Puncher than Kovalev...

GGG Gets More PRESS, but Kovalev is THE European Fighter to Get Behind...He'll Have the BETTER Career Too...Dude is SCARY Good...

Agreed on all counts REED. A few months ago I thought that GGG was P4P better than Kov, but at this point I don't think so. I think that Kov is not only bigger than GGG, but BETTER as well. Ward ain't stupid. He'll fight GGG LOOOONGGG before he fights Kov. And I agree that Kov could have a better, more dominate career. He's actually a year YOUNGER than GGG, even though facially he looks much older.

I am still not sold on Kovalev. He looks like the goods and he is fun to watch, but at this point of his career Kelly Pavlik looked unstoppable too. What will happen when Kovalev faces a guy has really good footwork (Sillakh had mainly speed, not skill) and can he take it better than Kelly?

About GGG I am much more convinced, based on his amateur career and also the style which he wins his fights with.

Kov has actually destroyed a comparable, if not BETTER list of opponents than GGG, so I dunno why you're sold on one and not the other. They're both beasts, but I tend to think Kov's power is a tad more devastating. As for Pavlik; the fact that Pav was an alcoholic is ultimately the reason why his career was cut short. But beyond that, Pavlik was NOT as talented as Kovalev. He didn't have the power, fluidity, nor solid D that Kov has.

GGG closes the ring better (in this regard he is one of the best I have ever seen), he is the more accurate and has greater variety, which he proved in amateurs where he succeeded despite amateur rules and gloves take power out of equation.

All this may be academic of course: if Kovalev keeps walking through opponents the way he has then it doesn't matter how one-dimensional he might be

I don't disagree, but the fact that Kov is heavier handed can maintain a high workrate may make him harder to beat. I just disagreed with the Pavlik comparison. Pavlik never blew guys away effortlessly like Kov is doing. Even in Kelly's KO wins, he endured damage. I actually think that prime Pavlik vs GGG would be an AWESOME matchup, but I think GGG would have eventually grinded Kelly down and stopped him.

Great post and summary of Kovalev. Anyone who hasn't seen much of Kovvles should read this.

Interesting point about Gaybox too. He is far more hyped, and the more obvious star of the 2 - a smoother, more refined style of fighting than Kovalev, great amateur etc - but it wouldn't surprise me if Kovalev proves to be just as good.

One thing about Kovalev, he looks pretty old for his age. He is actually younger than Gaybox (they are 30 and 31), but I honestly think he looks a decade older. If I had to guess I would put Gaybox at 28 and Kovalev at 38. Visual perception of age doesn't seem to translate to boxing miles on the clock though, so probably doesn't mean much.

WTF do looks mean? Greg Oden looks 58 and he's still in his 20's. Some guys just look older than there age. Kov facially looks in his late 30's, while GGG has somewhat of a baby face.

Yep, hence the line that follows the observation

Some people just naturally look older than others I guess - Kovalev has an old, rugged, Soviet face.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kovalev's actual age was different than his official age. He is born north from Kazakstan, which is as far in east as Iran, which means that information such as age can well be inaccurate, if they have wanted him to represent some junior team at some stage. No way was Sam Peter born in 1980 as claimed either

    Same for me.

Sure he looks excellent, but Silak is made of wet paper, and Cleverly is pretty much a mid level guy. The Campillo win is impressive, but still, he's a guy that had a draw with Karo Murat 2 fights before Kovalez annhilated him, so it puts thing in perspective. I'd like to see him against a guy that wont fall as soon as he gets touched.
