AFAIK, they still have to declare the salary given to their fighters to the IRS. Don't see how not making their salaries public would help the fighters save taxes

Manny's not broke. The reason why he needs to borrow money for the relief goods is because the phil. Govt froze all of his bank account , even the account of his wife because he is being accuse of not paying the right amount of tax.

If the updated story is true, then it's a big deal about nothing. Seems like the Filipino government are arseholes and froze his accounts for no real reason.

it doesn't unless they don't intend to report it. Same with the bullshit that they tax boxers over numbers reported in newspapers. :notallthere:

    That's the MMA Apologist's Theory...

An MMA Realist Would Argue the Secrecy of UFC Payouts is a Result of them Being EMBARRASSINGLY LOW...1nce the EXACT Figures Became Public, the Degree to Which the UFC Brass is UNDERPAYING its Fighters would Be Obvious & They'd Be Criticized...

1 Things For Sure, Dana White COULDN'T Care Less about the IRS Coming After his Fighters Because of REPORTS of How Much Money they Make...

500,000 + PPV buys for Pacquiao Rios. how the mighty have fallen.

Holy shit, that's bad. Is Rios less popular than Margarito?

he is. but the problem was that nap pacquiao took vs marquez probably caused a lot of fans to decide he wasnt worth spending 70 dollars

True. Fuck Mayweather and Pacquiao for their role in the PPV inflation. Shit should be back to $35.

    WOW!!!...

Floyd Could Put a Random "Mayweather Boxing Club" SPARRING Session on PPV & it'd Get 500,000 Buys...Pacquiao NEEDS Floyd Now, if he's Hoping to MAXIMIZE his Purses Before Retiring...

REED Blames Golden Boy, Moreso than Floyd, Since they're the REAL Promoters Behind that TMT Bullshit...If REED Isn't Mistaken, Dela was the 1st Fighter to BOOST PPV Prices into the 49.99-59.99 Range...No Doubt, Richard Schaefer & GBP "Advised" Floyd to Push Prices into the Current Range....

There's Also the Possibility Fans were Taking a WAIT & SEE Approach...Not Wanting to FULLY Invest in Manny Like Previously, Until they SAW he Hadn't Been Compromised by the Marquez KO...

Now, if Manny's NEXT PPV Does Similar #'s, then CLEARLY, his Popularity Will have WANED...

It probably has more to do with the card being in Macau than anything

Non domestic cards always do bad PPV numbers due to decreased press.

Maybe they were banking on the burgeoning PPV market in China and the Philippines.

Underpaid factory workers and rice farmers are just dying to shell out $70 bucks a pop to watch their heroes fight on the TV.

    This.

For 70 bucks, I'd want to see it live. PPV's over here are e20/25

Any truth to what SilentNight is saying about "overseas" PPVs?

Pacquiao was naive to think that he could maintain his high earnings in the US without paying the cost which is taxes.

He wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

What makes you think he did?

  28. SilentNight

    SilentNight Undisputed Champion

He had some sort of upside up to 30 million in his contract but based on the numbers I do not think he hit it.

  29. Azazel

    Azazel "Twinkle Toes" McJack

I also think it played a big part in the numbers, their was an article on maxboing telling how getting the media (US speaking of course) to cover the fight was a challenge due to the location.

As for Pac asking for a 50% split vs Mayweather, it's a really bad point because Pac agreed to take less than 50% before his ko loss to Marquez (wich imo, is a concession his team shouldn't have made)
