Agreed, not even close. REED is overrating Broner to a massive degree. He'll never be an elite fighter.
WHO's Overrating Him???...All REED is Saying is it's Time for Broner to Get OFF of Floyd's Nuts & Become HIS OWN Man:dunno:
I assumed you were insinuating he had the talent and skill to be able to emulate Ward's transformation and subsequent success. I think in my mind, doesn't matter what the fuck he does, he'll never be as good or as successful a fighter as the likes of Ward. Might as well continue to emulate Floyd, at least it gets people talking about him.
Maybe not as good as Ward but there's room for improvement. And I think Mr. The REEDs right that the first thing he has to do is give up the dream that he's Floyd II - throwing 15 counter punches a round ain't gonna cut it for him
I agree, but even so, the overall ability he showed on Sat simply doesn't match Ward's. Ward got dropped in one of his first few fights. That's no big deal. Since then, he's barely lost any ROUNDS as a pro. Broner just got the shit kicked outta him in his prime by a 2nd rate fighter.
I think the 15 counter punches a round is all him, not copying Floyd. It's not in his nature to do any more than that. If it was, he would have resorted to it on Saturday when he obviously had to dig deep and fight a bit. Plus, prime Floyd was quite active as I recall, a speedy, active, mobile boxer. Even today's version - bar one or 2 stinkers - doesn't come close to Nard's stinky output for example. There's almost always room for improvement with a fighter, even fighters much older than Broner, but IMHO there's not a lot of room for improvement with Broner. He's simply not very good at this level.
Exactly. People were too quick to forgive him for the arguable Ponce loss, when it should have been a major fucking clue as to his quality as a fighter. A young Floyd could have trained for an afternoon and beat Ponce with one hand tied behind his back. So it shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone that he just got battered by Maidana. I said all along he'll lose sooner rather than later, but as it happens Maidana is literally the ONE top fighter at 140 or 147 that I thought he would beat ::
Me too. I thought he'd do a number on Paulie too, because, well, everybody half decent does a number on Paulie.
He DID improve since the Ponce fight though. He was a bit green then. But on Sat night was very much him in his prime, and he got his ass handed to him a 2nd rate brawler.
And for the record, I don't even like Ward. And Ward is NOT on the same talent level as a Floyd, Roy, or Whitaker. But he's leagues more gifted than AB.
The fight was a bit stunning to me because three fights ago Maidana got the snot beaten out of him by Devon Alexander. Yes that Devon Alexander. Broner looked like Berto 2.0 out there and seemed clueless at how to handle a dangerous but limited guy. I kept thinking that either Garcia's training and Ariza's conditioning program have improved Maidana or Broner was a hype job that went up in weight too fast. Either way it was a pleasure to watch him take a beating.
First of all great opening post BigDawg, that was good stuff. Secondly I agree with REED here. I think Broner is getting way too vilified. Is he an ass? Sure. Did he deserve to get his ass kicked? Probably. Does all that mean he isn't talented? No. Everyone is saying he has no talent but I clearly see the guy is talented, and in a way that is much better than a guy like Andre Berto, who is all hand speed and nothing else. Even BigDawg mentioned that Broner had all the makings of a guy who didn't train that much. I'm not saying it's the reason he lost but just because he did lose doesn't mean a lot of that impressive stuff he did to all those bums he beat up was a mirage. The kid is talented, and he can obviously counter punch, he just needs to get deeper boxing skills and learn his craft more. He may not ever be great but there is no reason a guy as talented as that should be losing to a bum like Maidana. If anything I do think Broner might have been pushing himself too fast. I mean Maidana is a bum but there are worse opponents you can make your 147 debut against, especially when you're moving up in weight for no other reason than you're being a lazy fatass and trying to make your mark too soon.
Maidana a bum? His resume is 100x better than Broner he has look like crap against the most proven opponents he has face...Ponce De Leon, Malignaggi and Maidana...
Maidana beats the shit out of Broner, conclusion drawn by lb 4 lb: Maidana is a bum & Broner is talented.
Not really He's just more of a fighter, more balls-to-the-wall Broner is not a gifted counterpuncher... Gifted counterpunchers carve up a guy like Maidana Broner has a reasonable gift for lead power punching, throwing right hand leads... But he's a poor counterpuncher
LOL, seriously And I'll say it again, Broner is not a good counterpuncher at all... If he was a good counterpuncher, he would have landed 900 power shots on maidana He's a good lead power puncher
right. instead of countering he kept trying to push/leverage maidana back into the range where he was able to get off. he dont have the skill to shorten his shots to hit even the wildest of oncoming guys like maidana.
He's not less skilled than Broner, he was clearly the craftier of the 2, with a higher ring IQ, better feints etc. I think what you mean he looks sloppier than Broner. He is clearly the better fighter though as their fight proved.
That's right. To me, his one talent is throwing accurate, lead power shots, that aren't telegraphed. At this level, everything else about him is average like his power and ring IQ. Or indeed below average, like his workrate.
Worrrrd He gets off a nice right hand lead time-to-time... easily his best weapon... His jab is alright, but he's no counterpuncher
