Problem is that lead right is nowhere NEAR as quick as Floyd's. Hell, Floyd is almost 37, and not as quick as he was in his 20's, and he STILL has faster hands than 24 yr old Broner.
Even if it were, it wouldn't matter... Floyd Mayweather hasn't had a great career because he throws a fast right hand lead... He's had a great career for (among other things) being a great defensive fighter and counterpuncher ... Broner is neither of those things
Obviously, but was just pointing that out. I really overrated Broner's handspeed. Not that I EVER thought it was on par with Floyd's, but damn!
Word Handspeed is only useful if you have timing, have knowledge You could have the fastest hands around and it will only get you so far at the top levels... Look at Khan It's like trying to be a major league pitcher with only a fastball... Even if you throw 100 mph, if there is no changeup or a breaking ball, the average-to-good hitters will eventually adjust and they'll hit the shit out of it
You gotta admit though, in Khan's case it's taken him pretty fucking far. He was a bit of a hypejob all along and has been given more chances than he deserved, but overall he's had a LOT of success from essentially range and handspeed, and some heart.
I suppose, but it's really only worked against guys who are similarly inclined... Zab's no great shakes technically and has long depended on speed... At his age, he no longer could compete with Khan's and he lacked the technique to compensate Malignaggi has been successful against slower guys who can't punch (or an old man in Judah's case), he's been wrecked by every world-class guy he's fought... Khan's the first guy he fought who could button mash faster than him and unlike Paulie, actually could sting with some shots Those are Khan's biggest scalps unless you are convinced he conclusively defeated Maidana (I had a draw and Maidana is as flawed and sloppy as anybody in the top 100 p4p) I think in terms of exposure, yeah it's (among other non-boxing things) taken Khan a long way but is Khan in position to be a legit world champ? Are there many top fighters you like his chances against? At this point he's living off of his name and the hype machine that preceeded his first professional punch
Well that's basically what I mean, in terms of money and exposure, he's a huge overachiever given all he really has is range and handspeed. He's not an elite fighter at all, and if he'd even fought more Maidana level fighters with power, his resumé would look fucking awful. It just surprises me that some handspeed and hype has given him as much success as it has.
Yeah, you guys can laugh at that all you want. I don't take it back. In my eyes Broner is the more talented fighter. Is he better? No, obviously not now but I think of the 2 he clearly has the potential to be a great fighter. Maidana is what he is, a club fighter who although talented as well, his only talent is power. I haven't seen the fight yet so I'm only going off of past experiences, but from what I've seen Maidana is one of the most sloppiest, skilless fighters I've ever seen and has been routeinly called a club fighter. Broner has always shown talent and even skills. What, is it impossible for a talented fighter to lose to a power punching bum? I agree with what you said but I'd add this: To beat Maidana you can't just be a gifted counter puncher, you also have to have some semblance of defense and not let him land on you.
lb 4 lb is like the modern day pundits singing the praise of harry greb. except he does it with current fighters
Maybe you guys just don't know what I mean by talented. When I say talent in this instance I'm talking about specific traits, things like natural hand speed, quick reflexes. I'm not saying Broner is talented as in an overall talented fighter who has put it all together.
He has nowhere near the talent to be a great fighter. What does he have exactly that is remotely great? As me and cdogg said, all he really has is accurate, untelegraphed, lead power shots. Even his handspeed is nothing special at all, neither is his power, or his ring IQ, or his workrate, or his footwork or mobility.
You said he has the talent to be a great fighter. My opinion is he doesn't even have close to the talent or skill level to be a great fighter.
No he isn't. You can't be totally clueless as to what to do when your opponent gets on the inside and still be called a "good boxer." He is athletic and very fast, but that doesn't make him a good boxer.
