Captain Phillips Based on a true story. The movie wastes no time in setting up the premise and get the events moving towards its inevitable high point: the attack of the American business ship by Somali pirates in their small boats. The showdown between the ship's water hoses and the pirates firing bullets is really well done and creates tension, even though you know who will win this showdown. Tom Hanks is good, but not particularly great as Captain Phillips, a character that comes forward as such a decent, almost saintly, human being, that sometimes you wish he was a little more 'real' in the sense of showing some character defects and not so perfect. On the other hand Barkhad Abdi as the Somali pirate leader delivers the most realistic performance in this film. The guy looks like the part and it gives you the impression they hired a real Somali pirate. His Academy Award nomination is well deserved. Good film. 8/10
It wasn't that good to me but worth watching once. I watched this a few days ago and didn't even think to review it here. That's how unmemorable it was.
Yup. that is why I am not crying foul for Hanks not getting an Oscar nomination. The Oscar for Best Supporting Actor will be between Jared Leto as the transvestite in Dallas Buyers Club & Barkhad Abdi in this film.
Just watched it. I thought it was fantastic and it exceeded by expectations by a mile. Good work all around. Paul Greengrass is still the best director at making modern historical procedurals seem as close to real life as possible, in a cinematic setting. Tom Hanks was fantastic and his accent was fine, not that it should matter a whole lot, unless your a fucking linguistics professor. You assholes probably never even been to Vermont. :nono: I realized after the movie was over, how much I forgot how good of an actor he really is. He gets nominated for Awards, occasionally wins, but always seems slept on for his craft. He does not have to chew scenery to be scary good. Excellent, nuanced, mostly low-key performance, by somebody who didn't look like he was TRYING to win an award, in a movie that was about as straight forward as possible in trying to reach it's goal. The Somali guys were excellent, and I think I'll give a lot of credit to the director here, who has a history of wrangling solid performances out of inexperienced and non-actors. I'll be honest here, and say, I think Tom Hanks had a hell of a lot to do with helping these guys up their game to. I have a feeling he was mentoring them through a lot of their tougher scenes together. 9/10
