    GREAT Thread...

To REED, THE 1st Flick that Springs to Mind is the Actor's Defining Role...YES, that's VERY Subjective...

Nicholson - "The Shining"...Like Brother Xplosive Said, "Here's Johnny" SEALED It...Jack's 1 of THE More Quotable Actors Ever, but that's his SIGNATURE Line & a Role PERFECTLY Suited to his Personality...Probably the Genesis of Nicholson just Being "Nicholson" On Screen, as Opposed to "Acting"...

    DeNiro - "Raging Bull"
Pacino - "Scarface"....REED's Never Seen the Movie in it's ENTIRETY, but this is Always the 1st to Spring to Mind, when Thinking Pacino Flicks...

    Schwarzenegger - "Terminator"
    Stallone - "Rocky"
Willis - "Die Hard"...Yippy Ki Yay, Motherfuckers!!!...
    Cruise - "Top Gun"
Russell - "Escape from New York" or "Tango & Cash"
    Kilmer - "The Doors"
Van Damme - "Breakin":hut:...But Seriously, Either "Bloodsport", "Lionheart" or the Futuristic Karate Flick he Made...
Seagal - "Above the Law" or the 1 that Followed, which Featured his Then Wife, Kelly LeBrock...
Costner - "Bull Durham" or "The Bodyguard"

Diesel - "Fast & Furious" or the Flick where he's the Daredevilish Guy who's Recruited to Do Special Missions....

    Damon - "Good Will Hunting"

    Thank god

He would've been horrendous in that role

No way, man... French Connection all the way... He won Best Actor and the film won Best Picture, Friedkin won Best Director... Put him on the map in a big way, made him a star

    Denzel - training day
Affleck - Gigli (sad but true, thats probably what he's most closely associated with in the public mind)
    Diesel - Pitch black/Riddick
    Damon - Bourne
Hackman - French connection (I havent even seen it (YET, Clogg :scared2:) and the 'pickipsi' scene is still the first thing I think of when I think Hackman)
    Freeman - Shawshank
    Clooney - Ocean
    Crowe - Gladiator

Honestly, when i think usual Suspects i think Gabriel Byrne before I think Spacey. Spacey was American beauty. And it was arguably a bigger film, too.

He would have butchered it, but would still get an Oscar nom.

I took the thread as being 'subjective' the same way a 'keynesian beauty contest' is though - it's about judging public perception. I've never seen it either but if you see a clip of Hackman on TV its usually as 'Popeye'. The first picture on his wiki page is him as popeye. Thats the iconic hackman role, imo. Crimson Tide might be second?

  21. Can't believe people chose the obvious OTT roles for Jack Nicholson yet missed off arguably his best performance:
    Chinatown

But I guess 'Best' isn't always 'Defining' or 'Quintessential'
    :dunno:

You could make the arguement that Hackman's defining role was Unforgiven. However, I'm gonna agree with Cdogg and say French Connection.

Oh, and for Morgan Freeman, I'm gonna agree with whoever said Shawshank. That movie is both his, and Tim Robbins defining roles.

Anybody say Tom Hanks yet? If so, that's a pathetically easy one. He'll ALWAYS ALWAYS be most remembered as Gump.
