Fight that people remember 'wrong'

I agree with Cdogg. Ali-Foreman is the biggest misconception. The common mainstream belief is that Ali took a brutal battering, and just wore Foreman out. In reality, Ali countered the living shit outta Foreman, and didn't take too much punishment in return.

Foreman was far more worn out for the counters he was eating, than from anything he was throwing at Ali.

Had Ali taken half as much punishment as the legend remembers, then he would have been a goner. It doesn't matter how tough Ali was. NO fighter in history is gonna get punched in the face non-stop by a young Foreman without going to sleep.

    Ali didn't take a pounding.

So You Had Duran AHEAD After 5 Rounds???...Leonard Won 6 & 7 CLEARLY, if REED's Not Mistaken...

REED Agrees that Duran WON Some Rounds, but @ NO Point was he AHEAD in the Fight...

Leonard-Benitez is another misconception. History remembers it as a close chessmatch. In reality, it was a very one sided fight in favor of Ray. Benitez couldn't cope with Leonard's handspeed at all.

That's right. What a total cretin.

When he did his chest thumping fist pump with the "big up", he also tried to put on his best South London homeboy voice, in a desperate attempt to lose his Canadian fagginess, and appear like less like the vile, cretinous, homosexual heathen that he is.

I agree that Lewis Tua was fairly close after 4 rounds, Tua had a few succes with left hook rushes, and it seems like it would be an intereting fight in the later rounds. Then LL upped his gear, landed a few hard right hands, and Tua was tamed

That Leonard-Duran III wasn't a big deal, yet it was as hyped as the first two and actually broke a record for Vegas gates

I recall Hakkar running shamelessly for more than one round against Hopkins, that was an awful fight.

That's the idea of the thread, fights that people remember wrong :kick::TLC:

Yes, it was an awful fight since Hakkar wasn't able to harm Hopkins at all and Hopkins was playing around but Hakkar did try. Maybe 'very gutsy' is an exaggeration but regular gutsy is undeniable

I think even regular gutsy is pretty debatable

I actually really like that fight. I like exhibitions of boxing skill more than anything, personally. Sometimes when two guys are evenly matched its easy to forget just how skilled the top guys are and mismatches like that remind you. I think hakkar tried his best

It's an excellent point. When 2 top level guys fight it's often a chess match, or a bit awkward, sometimes both are playing it safe to make as few a mistakes as possible, or repeating the same thing over and over if it works, etc. So yeah, you can lose sight of just how absurdly skilled they are.

When an elite fighter fights someone like Hakkar you you realise just how many levels above they are, and how many "moves" ahead they are in the ring.

I wouldn't want to watch them all the time, but I appreciate a good mismatch too, as long as the winner has exceptional craft/skill/talent to appreciate.

you chaps must have thoroughly enjoyed the 36 minutes of Duran/Bizzarro where no punches were landed due to Lou's strategy

Yeah, Calling Hakkar's Performance "Gutsy" is a SLAP in the Face to Legitimate Warriors like Gatti, Ward, & a Littany of Others...

Cause Gatti sure looked gutsy vs Mayweather, it's far easier to show heart vs a fighter of your level than a fighter far far better than you are. Plus, nobody is saying Hakar showed epic level of heart a la Richard Hall vs Roy Jones. Just that he gave his best, tried to win and didn't deserved all the backlash he received.

I don't think anyone wants to watch this fight agains, but after only rewatching rounds 3 & 4, I, once again, can't see how you can criticizes Hakkar for not trying. He's agains a bigger, stronger and infinitively more skilled fighter so, of course he ain't gonna do much. But still, he came forward and he threw punches, not much more you can expect from a club fighter going on agains an ATG. The Colonel praised his toughness multiple time during the broadcast, but those watching HBO were influenced a lot by the disrespectful attitude of Merchant who's pretty much the prototype of keyboard warriors.
